Emilia

What do you think? Will she forever be having to say 'with an E'?

Ideally I would like something with an Italian feel as I'm part Italian. Any other suggestions please?

I find this super interesting!

I don't really love Ah-meal-ya / Ah-mealy-ya (Amelia). It's a lovely name but not great in my accent.

Much prefer Em-meal-ya / Em-mealy-ya, though always felt it was the same name, but just a slight change in the pronounciation of the start? And I like the Em / Emme shorthand.

However - I ADORE Em-ill-LEE-ah / Emme-Leah, with the emphasis on the LEE rather than the meal? Is this a known pronunciation / mainly European?

crabette · 19/11/2020 15:06

(Like, either Emilia pronounced like Amelia but with an E, or Emilia pronounced with the milia part to rhyme with Sophia!)

bananamonkey · 19/11/2020 15:13

I have one, she’s not at school yet but sometimes I do have to say “with an E” even though they are different names and Em and Am are pronounced differently to me! It is popular but so far we’ve only met one other.

Agree with pp I really hate it when we get Emelia Confused

StripyTigerTail · 19/11/2020 15:14

I worked with two Emilias, both European (non brits). I speak another European language (not the same as either Emilia I worked with). The Emilias I worked with said Emilia like Amelia, but maybe more of an Eh at the beginning, but very difficult to tell ths difference. As I said, I thought they were called Amelia until they emailed me!

In my other language, Emilia is said like Eh-MEAL-ya.

bananamonkey · 19/11/2020 15:15

I don’t regret it though, still love the name.

Sorry, that was in response to @crabette's question whether Em-ill-EE-ah is the European pronunciation. I don't believe so, but perhaps it varies.

You can never rely on a name being unusual. DD2 was the only person with her name in the UK in her birth year and no one at all in the years either side. Up pops a Spanish girl at her school with the same name (although a different spelling)....

Beautiful name.

MrsIndecisive2 · 02/04/2022 19:43

I should add in my baby classes there have been 3 sienna's and I also know of 4 other sienna's that have been born in the past year. I known of 5 poppy's born this year and a number of Ava and daisy's but these names don't tend to get the same bad press for being popular?! Maybe it's just coincidence that I've not come across another amelia or emilia throughout my life but I just feel the name has really negative options compared to other names which seem to be a lot more common.

Zombie...

MrsIndecisive2 · 02/04/2022 20:23

Sorry, what does that mean?

DogsAndGin · 02/04/2022 20:23

I think Emilia sounds very different to Amelia. I love the name Emilia.

When saying virtually any name for the first time to someone, there’s some spelling it out involved. Even Smith can be spelt Smyth!

That you for the nice and constructive comments. But what do all these references to zombies mean? Am I being stupid? Also there is a way to be constructive and kind at the same time. I think some people on this post may have forgotten that.

It's a zombie thread. You've reopened a thread from 2 years ago instead of starting your own.

Thank you for explaining, sorry I am new to this and didn't really understand how it works.

FayCarew · 03/04/2022 12:43

I like Emilia but don't like Amelia. Many will write it as Amelia or Emelia.

I say it as Em-ill-ya not Em-eel-ya

spearmynt · 03/04/2022 13:26

I really like Emilia.

movingsoon13 · 04/04/2022 02:43

I prefer Emilia or Emelia to Amelia, it sounds natural and prettier
