Laureline opinions

I'm curious to see the opinions of this name here. I think it's going to be more divisive than some of the other more traditional names we have on our list, but I still really like it.

My first thought was that it was an attempt at Lorelei.

How do you pronounce it?

On googling I see it was made up for a comic book.

It looks quite pretty.

lemonandthyme · 17/11/2020 10:08

Like PP I also assumed you had misheard or misspelled Lorelei

peachypetite · 17/11/2020 10:13

Laurel is much nicer.

user68634 · 17/11/2020 10:15

Lorelei is really nice. Laurie and Laurel is nice too. Laureline has a similar nice sound to it but it just sounds like a made up mix of Laura and Caroline but maybe because I've just not come across it.

user68634 · 17/11/2020 10:15

Makes me think of Coraline too.

ShipOfTheseus · 17/11/2020 10:41

Is it an -een sound at the end?
I quite like it.

The French pronunciation is with the -een but I quite like the way I assume a lot of English speakers would say it with -line like in names like Caroline.

Thanks for the replies. I have considered Lorelei which I like as well and I get that it's a more established name so maybe there would be fewer issues with it. I don't know if it's because I came across Laureline before I knew about Lorelei but I quite like the -line ending.

I would, and did, assume -een, because it seemed like a French name, so like Josephine, Evangeline, Celine, etc. I’m not so keen on -line personally. I’d say Lorelei was a much more well known name than Laureline, if you like that sound.

Yeah, it's from a French comic LOL. I'm usually a bit cautious about using fictional characters but she's a positive character and it's not likely to be known by a lot of people.

I would pronounce it like the Lore at start of Lorelei but it ends with -line like Caroline. I think that's how most English speakers would pronounce it. I have seen it spelt like Loreline but I quite liked the spelling I put in the title.

I don’t think they necessarily would, though, as in my examples above - Evangeline, Celine, etc. Depends how much you’re bothered about having to correct people.

Oneandabean · 17/11/2020 12:34

I initially thought you meant lorelei.
I think you will have the same issue correcti bc people with either as there’s been many threads on the correct pronunciation of lorelei and it always varies.
For what it’s worth I read in as line rather than leen at then end.

Fair point. I wasn't thinking that there are actually quite a lot of -line names pronounced that way though they're not popular where I live. I guess when I think of -line names I think of names like Caroline or Madeline. It's something to think about.

I love it! I am familiar with the comics.

tofuschnitzel · 17/11/2020 12:39

I'm not a fan of Lorelei.

VenusClapTrap · 17/11/2020 12:42

Too long and fussy for me. I like Laurel though.

Coffeeandaride · 17/11/2020 12:51

I also thought it was a “version” of Lorelei. Laurel is nice.

lottiegarbanzo · 17/11/2020 12:52

My first thought was 'has she mis-heard Lorelei?'. But, people would get used to it quickly and it's quite nice. Gives some good nn options too; Laurie, Lina.

Enterthedragons · 17/11/2020 12:54

Love Lorelei, never heard of Laureline before- is it made up?

ZarkingBell · 17/11/2020 13:17

My kids loved that comicstrip (and the film)!
Laureline is a lovely name and I think people would get used to it quite soon.

Nell96 · 17/11/2020 13:43

I dislike it - sounds a bit like two names mashed together to me. Laurel is beautiful though.

lottiegarbanzo · 17/11/2020 13:51

I don't like Laurel. A blunt end, easily corrupted to 'w' so 'Loruw' or 'Lowuw' and a very ordinary shrub.

Laura, Lauren, Laurie, Lorelei, Laureline, all yes.

ShipOfTheseus · 17/11/2020 13:52

I think that those that know the name from the cartoon are going to pronounce it the French way. I didn’t know it, but I’ve been thinking about it and I like it a lot. I don’t like the English -line - way, though.

Sunflower0000 · 17/11/2020 14:30

I actually really like this, also a fan of Lorelei. I pronounced it as line and was not previously familiar with the name.
I prefer the Loreline spelling though as the Laura bit makes it look slightly made up.
If you like names that end in line Adeline is very nice

Too frilly for my taste.
