Due dates put me sometime around Christmas, so you'll see a theme below...

We are a bit on the hippyish-side with names, and with our first two children have gone for 'old fashioned main-stream first name followed by slightly 'out there' middle name' and then used the middle name as a family/pet name, and the grown up name for official stuff.

This is my list - my husbands suggestions are more unusual, he is very keen on Allegra/Elektra/Sukie, so do feel free to comment on those too Smile

Star
Lucy
Sophie
Saffron
Jessica
Harriet
Susan
Natalia
Winter

Thoughts? And extra suggestions? X

Ivy and Holly should also be considered if you want old fashioned or Christmas

Namechangedforthisoct2 · 12/11/2020 08:31

Allegra - sounds a bit hard for a girl and reminds me of Algeria
Elektra - like it, what nn? Elle, lekke, tia?
Sukie- like!
Star - love!
Winter - love!

All of your other names are too ‘normal’ for my tastes so won’t comment.

What about:
Cosima
Monet
Nixie
River
Hero
Venus
Coco
Gaia

Rainbowqueeen · 12/11/2020 08:35

I really like Natalia. It feels very Russia in the middle of winter to me

Natalia Saffron or Natalia Sukie sound nice

SenCallec · 12/11/2020 09:03

Lucy Allegro would be fab then wouldn't it.

Random but in our house undercooked boiled eggs are Sukie. It turns out that is bc Polly put the kettle on but Sukie took it off again in a nursery rhyme we used to sing.

AuntLucy · 12/11/2020 09:10

@Namechangedforthisoct2 I agree ref Elektra and Allegra but -lots of harsh consonants in the first, and I don't like any of the nicknames for the second. Interesting that early preferences are for Star, Winter and Natalia - these are my favourites too but I expected to be sternly told-off that I am naming a human, not a pony 😁. More votes pls!

Do you like Natalie. It means born at Christmas. Although Natalia is gorgeous.
Also Love Lucy and Suki.
Quite like Sophie and Jessica.
Don't like Saffron, Star or Harriet.
Really detest Allegra. It gets a lot of love on here though.

I don't think Susan is quite cool enough yet. However then again it would be quite refreshing now.

Other suggestions
Belle.
Eve
Tabitha.
Victoria.
Angel
Florence
Trinity
Beatrice
Elsa
Rosabelle
Winter
Louisa

merlotormalbec · 12/11/2020 09:28

I love Allegra!

Star- really dislike this sounds chavvy
Lucy- love but very popular
Sophie- same as above
Saffron- not keen
Jessica- cute
Harriet- love this
Susan- no please no
Natalia- I really dislike Natalie hut Natalia is sweet actually

How about Snow as a middle name? I know someone with a Phoebe Snow and I think it's so pretty
Winter

AuntLucy · 12/11/2020 09:38

Natalia also means born at christmas - alternative European variation of the same name. I had been reflecting on Trinity, but wondered if people would have Catholic associations, and we aren't Catholic. Holly is a maybe.. two syllable names do tend to go best with our surname (which is double barrelled, three syllables. Keep em coming..

Allegra - love it, elegant, don't think it needs to be shortened anyway, wouldn't worry too much about 'Ally' type nicknames
Elektra - love it, unusual and sophisticated
Sukie - not really a fan but OK
Star - god no
Lucy - bland, very 90s/00s
Sophie - bland, a bit dated as was very popular in 90s/00s but relatively classic
Saffron - meh, reminds me of Saffie from AbFab
Jessica - bland, a bit dated, again very popular in 90s/00s
Harriet - classic but bland
Susan - very dated, makes me think of someone in their 50s
Natalia - nice, Eastern European associations
Winter - not a big fan

Your suggestions make me smile - they are a crazy mix of names I think of as very bland and 90s/00s (along with Emma, Hannah, Sarah, Louise, Jennifer, Katy) and quite out-there names (along with Indigo, Wednesday, Rain etc.)

notalwaysalondoner · 12/11/2020 09:56

I don't think people associate the Trinity with Catholicism - it is a central concept to all Christianity. I would be more concerned about the Matrix associations.

I'd be inclined unless your husband is fully onboard to suggest a more 'out there' middle name like Winter, Snow, Star or equivalent then a more 'standard' first name like any of the others in your list.

Flappingflamingo · 12/11/2020 09:58

Star- awful
Lucy- love
Sophie- really like
Saffron- awful
Jessica- like
Harriet- love love love
Susan- no
Natalia- really like
Winter- no but wouldn't be as bad as a middle name.
Really don't like any of your husbands suggestions sorry.
I'm a Christmas baby and have always been a bit disappointed my name is nothing festive!! 😂 😂
Other suggestions
Holly
Ivy
Noelle
Robin

CorianderLord · 12/11/2020 10:07

I like Winter, Sophie and Allegra. I dislike all the others tbh.

AuntLucy · 12/11/2020 10:09

Lucy is a wintery/Christmassy name for me because of Narnia (I can't believe that wasn't immediately self-evidentGrin). Some of the 80s ones on the list are family tree names but from older generations (births from 1920s and 1950s) which make it onto the list by dint of being neither loved nor hated by either of us, and easy for a child/adult to live with. Harriet and Natalia seem to be doing well, Allegra and Elektra are polarising...

Star - awful
Lucy - nice
Sophie- nice
Saffron - not keen
Jessica - fine
Harriet - fine
Susan - fine (but Susie not Sue)
Natalia - Ok but not keen on Nat
Winter - as in bleak midwinter?

FelicityPike · 12/11/2020 10:16

Natalia is lovely, very elegant & glamorous IMO.
I love Suki, very unusual.

starsinyourpies · 12/11/2020 10:29

I am a Christmas baby and have a Christmas name, when people realise this it always results in much hilarity and they think it's very naff so please don't go too obvious.

BlueChampagne · 12/11/2020 10:56

Lucy is lovely, as is its meaning. Saffron or Winter would be great middle names. Susan always seemed to be the sensible one in kids books of my era, but I expect she'd be the only one in her class. Otherwise how about Suzanne or Zsuzsa? Natalie/Natalia is a good option too. Nothing wrong with Jessica or Harriet, but there seem to be a lot of Sophies ...

user1493494961 · 12/11/2020 10:59

Some nice names on your list, except Star. My friend's horse is called Star so I can't get past that.

BlueChampagne · 12/11/2020 11:17

How about Nicola (or variant) for St Nicholas/Santa. And if 21/22 Dec, you could use Solstice as your more unusual name.

Itsalwayssunnyupnorth · 12/11/2020 11:22

Natalia Lucy

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 12/11/2020 11:27

I knew a Noelene/Noeleen, pronounced "No-leen".

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 12/11/2020 11:29

Lucia would reference the time of year (especially if she's early) - in Sweden they celebrate St Lucia's Day as part of Christmas celebrations, on 12 December.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 12/11/2020 11:30

Sorry, its 13 December

(see my username, LOL)

Woui · 12/11/2020 11:40

Love Suki, Winter and Natalia (but hate the nn Nat).

I'd go for Suki(e) Snow or Suki Winter.

bridgetreilly · 12/11/2020 11:44

Susan nn Sukie

I like Susan Jessica or Susan Harriet, but you could also go for Susan Allegra or Susan Elektra if you prefer.
