The nickname Tatty

Any ideas to which name/s could be the source of the nickname Tatty?

Just watched the 2016 Swallows & Amazons (I know the original was Titty...) and think it's rather sweet. The only one I can think of would be Tatiana.

Harriet or Henrietta could be Hattie aka Tattie I suppose.

CodenameVillanelle · 09/11/2020 20:16

Oh it's awful please don't
But if you have to, spell it Tati at least

HawkinsLab · 09/11/2020 20:16

Maybe Talia at a push...

FunnyInjury · 09/11/2020 20:16

I went to school with a Tatty.

She was Catriona Smile

marmiteloversunite · 09/11/2020 20:17

Tatiana?

midnightstar66 · 09/11/2020 20:20

Well it's a commonly used word for potato here, so no!

Bejazzled · 09/11/2020 20:22

Tatty Devine was a good Mumsnet poster of yesteryear

CherryPavlova · 09/11/2020 20:33

The Tattys I know are a Matilda and an Anastasia.

midnightstar66 · 09/11/2020 20:46

Actually thinking about it I knew a couple of tatties back in the day - they were Male with the surname Tait

Oneandabean · 09/11/2020 20:51

The ones I know wereNatasha, I didn’t realise it could be short for anything else.

GoldenZigZag · 09/11/2020 20:53

Natalie

But you do know it means scruffy don't you?

NannyR · 09/11/2020 20:56

I don't know if it's just a Yorkshire thing, but the word tatty means scruffy, worn out - not something I would personally call a child.

GirlCalledJames · 09/11/2020 20:56

The Dickens character‘s full name is Harriet.

wwud12 · 09/11/2020 20:58

Isn't it a potato, or a scruffy child?

lorisparkle · 09/11/2020 21:00

My friends nickname as a child was 'Tatty head' because her brother could not say her name - Catherine. I used to think it was rather cute but it evolved rather than was planned.

ZebraKid71 · 09/11/2020 21:01

I know a Tatiana who goes by Tati (she's American and living in the states so it's generally pronounced to sound more like Toddy). I'm not a fan but it's marginally better than how it would be pronounced in the UK.

I really don't think it works here, I just think of potatoes or read it to mean scruffy.

ILoveYoga · 09/11/2020 21:01

Not a good sounding nickname

Conjures up someone tatty, unkempt, torn/dirty clothing etc

Meepmeeep · 09/11/2020 21:02

Potato?

museumum · 09/11/2020 21:02

I’m in Scotland - you really wouldn’t want to call your kid tattie here 🥔

MerchantOfVenom · 09/11/2020 21:02

The Tatty I knew in childhood was a Catherine, but as upthread, I think it revolves naturally.

TomNooksBalanceBook · 09/11/2020 21:03

Tattie as in potato? Why not spud?

MerchantOfVenom · 09/11/2020 21:03

*evolved!

MamaLoLo1 · 09/11/2020 23:36

So many possibilities! I can understand the potato and scruffy potential but still think it sounds like a fun nickname for a little girl ✌️

I think I read somewhere that Ransome's Titty was Titiana - no clue how much truth there is in that although I love the books!

raskolnikova · 10/11/2020 01:06

The poster called Tatty Devine presumably named herself after the jewellery brand.
