Thoughts on Marguerite

What is your first reaction to the name Marguerite?

There's lots I love about it... The French connection (personal to me), that it means pearl (a name I like but can't use), that it also represents daisies (Daisy being a family name), the range of potential nicknames (Margot, Maggie, Rita, Etta etc.)...

But there's also something stopping me from falling in love with it. It feels rather long even though it's the same number of syllables as Stephanie or Georgina. My other half loves it and I want to too, but I can't put my finger on what's putting me off!

Like it a lot.

It is quite grown up. It's hard to imagine calling across a playground but a dimunutive would work fine.

I really dislike Rita but like Daisy and Margot, though think Margot is a separate name, so if you want to call her Margot, why not go for that as the name? I met a little Margot once. Would have said that was a very grown-up name too but actually, on a little child, it was very cute and fresh.

I think there are risks with the pronunciation of Marguerite. It seems to invite a terribly precise, affected pronunciation. If drawled though, it becomes very similar to Margaret, or 'Marg-Reet'.

Margeurite Patten the cook whose baking recipes my mum used when I was young. It always makes me think of margarine but that might be the baking recipe thing! It's a beautiful name but not the easiest to spell

Sittingonthefence83 · 05/11/2020 23:50

Love it

lobsteroll · 05/11/2020 23:57

Love it!!

AdaColeman · 06/11/2020 00:22

I love it, it's a fabulous name!

Bellevu · 06/11/2020 00:33

Margin is a diminutive, so no worries there.

Love the name

Hazelgood · 06/11/2020 00:35

Love it! One of my favourite names Grin

HeronLanyon · 06/11/2020 00:42

My first thoughts -
Like it.
See it as an older woman’s name for some reason.
Reminds me of Madeleine which I personally prefer.
It seems more French than lots of other French names. I’d slightly wonder if there was a French connection (🎥 !) in the family.

People nickname their children after document formatting?? Shock

SeanCailleach · 06/11/2020 06:39

I love the name. I know a teenage one. It seems very fresh and elegant. She gets Margo a lot which is also elegant.

but.... didn't you post this a couple of weeks ago? And get identical replies? Are the dates playing up?

MamaLoLo1 · 06/11/2020 07:17

Thank you for your replies! It does sound very grown up to me too, maybe that's what it is.

Maggie is my favourite nickname but I love Daisy too 🌼

@SeanCailleach Marguerite featured on a shortlist of French names I posted about a few months ago, but that was more to do with pronunciation. As in... Are these names easy to say for Brits/in English without the pronunciation getting mixed up? Baby is nearly here now and we're down to the last two!

My first thought was it looks/sounds to much like margarine. Sorry!

Tadpolesandfroglets · 06/11/2020 07:33

Love it! It was my grandmothers name.

husbandcallsmepickle · 06/11/2020 07:39

It's my cousin's name. I like it.

Oneandabean · 06/11/2020 07:49

I can’t help but immediately think margarita pizza. But I’m sure any odd association like that would quickly be replaced once people get used to it

JemimaTiggywinkle · 06/11/2020 07:53

I like it

MamaLoLo1 · 06/11/2020 08:13

@Oneandabean We do love pizza in this house! 😂

My son went to nursery with a Marguerite. She was one of his friends but he constantly asked why she was named after a pizza. I would hope people asked it less frequently as she grew up.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 06/11/2020 08:45

I love it. I knew twins, one was Marguerite and the other was Claire. The names didn't seem to match.

emmathedilemma · 06/11/2020 10:05

Pizza, sorry!
It's a bit frilly for me.

Mousepad20 · 06/11/2020 10:46

I think it's a lovely name in itself but you also have several reasons to choose it.

I'd think of the flower before pizza (and I know an actual Margarita).

lottiegarbanzo · 06/11/2020 11:00

I'd thought of Marguerite Patten (hence sense of grandeur, I think) but not of pizza, as the emphasis is different. But, yes, people will think of that. As a grown-up name, with Margot as an everyday shortening, it is pretty good though.

I love that she could be Margot to some people, Daisy to others and Marguerite when feeling formal. Pretty versatile!

Shmithecat2 · 06/11/2020 11:03

My first thought is Margarita Pracatan singing on the Clive James show 😂. That might just be my age though 😬

MikeUniformMike · 06/11/2020 11:24

Margarita and Magaretta are nice too.

SoupDragon · 06/11/2020 11:29

@MikeUniformMike

Margarita and Magaretta are nice too.
Margarita sounds like both Pizza and a cocktail. On that basis I would give it a miss.

Marguerite is far better. DD has it as a middle name though so I might be biased 😂
