Edward. Have always liked it.

AlwaysLatte · 05/11/2020 21:33

Edward because it has more flexibility and can suit any personality.

lottiegarbanzo · 05/11/2020 21:33

Joseph. It's lovely and not too common.

I've never liked Edward, Ed or Eddie. It seems a bit slimey to me. Must be from some early association.

There seem to be lots of Teds / Teddies around now. Many are Theodores but some Edwards. Potential for too many Eds and Teds, I think.

polkadotjimjams · 05/11/2020 22:20

Interesting replies, we don't know of any child Edward or Joseph's in our area. They are popular on the stats but we don't know of any locally which is quite nice. That may change at school of course

They’re both nice. I’ve heard them shortened to Seph and Ward which are a bit more unusual.

OptimisticSix · 05/11/2020 22:52

Joseph / Joe... And I love Ted it was my first choice for one of mine... But its becoming very popular now where I live while I can't think of any Josephs.

ifiwasascent · 06/11/2020 06:58

Jospeh! I don't know any not nice Joseph's. Edwards on the other hand... I also prefer the sound of Joseph to Edward

cptartapp · 06/11/2020 07:15

Edward in its entirety. No contrived nn.
I like Joseph too but it's somewhat more dated to my ears.

MercyBodle · 06/11/2020 07:19

I much prefer Edward. Joseph seems quite over-used around me and is just not as appealing. Edward feels fresher to me, and I love all the nicknames.

FatimaMunchy · 06/11/2020 07:28

Edward was what we called our first baby before he was born. The baby book I had said it meant.'guardian of joy'. I still love the name Smile

Bubbletrouble43 · 06/11/2020 07:57

Both fab. Both on my shortlist but I only had DDs.

polkadotjimjams · 06/11/2020 11:37

@MercyBodle that's interesting, do you mind me asking what area you're based? It's our first so maybe we aren't hearing names often but that's a good point

I'm sure I'm a long way from you. I live in Australia.

polkadotjimjams · 06/11/2020 16:58

Oh wow that is a long way @MercyBodle! I always look at Australian inspiration for names and certain trends, you seem to be ahead of the fashion! Thanks for getting back to me and your feedback.

I prefer Joseph personally and have a nephew we call Joe (no one ever said Joseph). I certainly like Edward but not as much as Joseph.

polkadotjimjams · 07/11/2020 09:44

Thanks @honkytonkheroe, I love the nn Joe too!

CharitySchmarity · 07/11/2020 17:18

I like both, but like Joseph more and love Joe for short.

Soulstirring · 07/11/2020 17:23

I like Joseph and Joe and Edward...just not Eddie

Tavannach · 07/11/2020 17:23

Joseph.
Edward's seems a little more staid to me.

Woui · 07/11/2020 17:40

Edward ! Mostly because I love the nickname Eddie!
I think a lot of the Ted / Teddy's are actually named that on their birth certificates (the 3 i know are).

mumandcub · 14/11/2020 14:22

I have a Joseph and I love it, there really isn’t many around (not sure why). He calls himself Joe but I still call him Joseph!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 14/11/2020 14:25

Joseph, love Joe

YoniAndGuy · 14/11/2020 16:20

Joseph definitely. It's such a kind, attractive name.

Madbengalmum · 14/11/2020 16:22

Love Edward it has always been my favourite boys name. So classic.

DepuisToujours · 14/11/2020 16:58

Edward. I think it's more elegant somehow.

I do like Joseph. However, (and I don't know why, because I appreciate the name is as old as time), Joseph feels a bit 90s / noughties to me. Same with Jacob and Joshua. I think that, although they're all biblical names, they had a big moment in the 90s - 2000s maybe?

Anyway, both nice names, but I prefer Edward.
