Welsh name for a boy?

I'm having a boy in January and live in Wales. I would like to pick a Welsh boys name. I was thinking off Llion. What do you think?

I really like it but he may spend a lifetime correcting that it’s not Leon.

Pittapatta · 30/10/2020 16:35

It's pronounced Llee-onn so very similar sounding to Leon

I am welsh so understand how to pronounce it but I think you run the risk of him being called Lion by non-Welsh speakers.

Letsleepingdogslie8 · 30/10/2020 16:50

I guess it depends if you’d be bothered by people saying Leon or Lion. My aunt Llinos gets very irate at being called Linos or Leenos.

I love
Gruffydd
Meredydd
Caradog
Dafydd
In that order

I love the name Macsen.

snidgetowl · 30/10/2020 17:25

I love it, it's not too common and sounds beautiful.

MikeUniformMike · 30/10/2020 18:33

It will be Lion, Cleeon, Thleeon, Leon, 'How the f*ck do you say that?'

My Aunty Llinos gets called Cleanose.

MikeUniformMike · 30/10/2020 18:35

It's ok if you are in 'Welsh Wales' but I prefer Gwion.

Rainyrainrant · 30/10/2020 18:37

@MikeUniformMike show Aunty Llinos the video I posted up-thread. I've been laughing about it all day.

My dad has a Welsh name but has lived in England since leaving university in 1971. It has always been a bit of a hassle - mainly because people seem to instinctively think the name is female rather than male.

Cherry321 · 30/10/2020 18:43

Steffan
Iestyn
Ioan
Idris
Geraint

Cherry321 · 30/10/2020 18:44

Llyr and Llew are also nice

Wtfdidwedo · 30/10/2020 18:47

I work with a Sîon, he gets called Sian or Sy-on every day and he lives on the border so it's not really unusual to hear Welsh names. I live the name Gruffydd and live in Wales but even I wouldn't do it.

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 30/10/2020 18:56

Can’t spell it but I always loved Tallyessine

ifiwasascent · 30/10/2020 19:01

Huw
Griffin

cariaaad · 30/10/2020 19:04

95% of non-Welsh people struggle with the Welsh 'll', generally pronounced 'kl' which I'm afraid makes it quite close to 'Klingon'.
As a Welsh person with a difficult to pronounce welsh name, I always wanted to give my child a more easily pronounced name but still keeping it Welsh 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

needanewidea · 30/10/2020 19:05

I loved Llinos when I was pregnant with DD but couldn't do it as we live in England. Hardly anyone would be able to say it, even after knowing how to. Which is a great shame as it's the death of the language in action isn't it?

Thinking back. I wonder why I didn't consider it for a middle name. I think it's fine to have a difficult to pronounce middle named as you don't need to hear people mangling it all the time! Would you consider Llion as middle name perhaps?

Nosleeptilteenagers · 30/10/2020 19:05

I prefer Llŷr, i know a couple of little Llŷrs and it’s a lovely name. We are English in Wales so I didn’t think we would be able to get away with it!

I also like Macsen, Gruffydd and Rhydian.

KormaKormaChameleon · 30/10/2020 19:06

Emlyn

WorriedMummy2020 · 30/10/2020 19:08

It's nice. Name him what you want. It's not the hardest pronunciation. I notice thatMumsnetters always caution against using Welsh and Irish names for fear of pronunciation issues. I don't see that often raised as an issue for names from other cultures which may also be 'hard' to pronounce. And many people in the UK have no choice in having 'hard' to pronounce surnames either.

needanewidea · 30/10/2020 19:09

How about:

Aneirin
Taliesin
Osian
Eirwyn
Idris
Teilo

missmouse101 · 30/10/2020 19:11

Nye is a fabulous Welsh name.

WorriedMummy2020 · 30/10/2020 19:13

Nye is great. However, the correct shortening of Aneurin is Nay, not Nye (based on how Aneurin should be pronounced.) I know an Aneurin who corrects anyone who calls him Nye for short.
