Welsh name for a boy?

I'm having a boy in January and live in Wales. I would like to pick a Welsh boys name. I was thinking off Llion. What do you think?

I'm in a Welsh speaking area and my child will be going through Welsh language education. So as a child I think it will be fine but as an adult they could live anywhere.

I was more wandering if people liked the name and how it sounds.

I have a Welsh name book and have been listening out for lovely boys names. Osian and Llion are my only first name contenders : )

Use the name you love. Only on Mumsnet people are told not to use names from their cultural heritage in case enlighten people can’t say it or in case they won’t to move from wales one day. The rest of the world hasn’t got that memo! Imagine what a boring world it would be if all names were globalised to appease the English.

Call him a name you love & it will work out fine.

These can all be pronounced by non Welsh speakers. With Llion the double LL is problematic and you risk his name not being the one you gave him. Its the same with LLewleyn

Llion is nice but I prefer Osian and I think Osian is easier to say (although some will mispronounce the 'an' as 'un').

I know several non Welsh speaking Welsh people who would pronounce Osian as 'osh-un' and Seren as 'Serrun' and Macsen as 'Mac-sun' for example.

I would suggest thinking about various possible mispronunciations which could crop up in advance and whether you can live with them.

My mother is a native Welsh speaker and my Dad is English. I was born and raised in England and my mother didn't think about the (IMO) very obvious way English people would mispronounce my name. It annoys her greatly and she would get snappy with people who got it wrong.

I hope to use Welsh names for my children but am taking the approach of thinking of mispronunciations in advance. So I can live with Ey-ruh for Eira but not Mire for Mair for example. I'm hoping it will annoy me less if I have a child with one of those names, although perhaps I will turn into my mother

I'd never heard of Llion! Is it unusual every where I wonder or just a quirk of the bit of Wales I'm in?

I like it, it sounds nice and I definitely don't subscribe to the idea of worrying about the English not being able to pronounce stuff. Go for it!

I think it's a lovely name and for what it's worth, I met a Llion in the Czech Republic originally from Wales and they all called him Llion.

Llion is not used much. I can only think of 3 - one is an actor, so I only know of him.

Yes but, should the child end up living outside Wales, he or she might end up using a middle name or a different name. I can think of a Geraldo (Spanish) and a Sergei (Spanish) - one got called Gerald and the other 'Surjy', and I can think of a Gerallt who was Gerry, and there was a mother on here who said that her daughter Gwenllian was Gwen to non-Welsh speakers. I can also think of some who use their 'middle' names instead of their first names - both are Middlename Firstname Surname and the 'middle' names are not Welsh. Think something like David Peredur Davies or Margaret Gwawr Jones. (made up names but ykwim)

Might be easier to consider this, which the OP has done, before naming a child.

I’m sorry but this is utter tosh

My husband and I are Welsh but as our surname is v Welsh and the middle names we've chosen are too (using our dads names) we're not having a Welsh first name.
But I love:

Go with the name you like. Non-welsh speakers will just have to learn a new name- not a big deal. Always amazes me how we have to anglicise everything to suit English names/sake of ease for certain people ....after all aren't we a nation made up of different countries and cultures?
And surely through the years you've met/become friends/work with people who have exotic names that you've managed to learn.

In that case - it's a beautiful sounding name. As is Osian also, you have great taste IMO!
