We’re completely stuck here. These are the names we like and our reservations -

Otto - think it might be too popular and a bit too ‘trying to be different but actually being the same’
Otis - I see it suggested a lot on these threads and I think it’s about to become very popular
Jude - I know several toddler Judes so think that has put me off
Remy - not sure if it sounds a bit soft for a grown man or like a nickname..?
Rudy - again not sure if it’s a child/young man’s name and will sound a bit silly as an older man?

Any feedback on these names would be great. And if you can think of any similar names that we might like?! Otherwise he’ll be nameless at this rate

Rupert, Elliot, Edmund, Robin, Noel, Noah,

AdelaideK · 22/10/2020 23:23

Rudy is horrible but the others are ok. I like Otis best.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 23/10/2020 00:22

How do you get too popular and too different from the same name.Confused

I also love Jude and quite like Otis.

Other ideas.
Cole. Caleb. Ezra. Zach. Casper. Gus. Finn.
Rex. Arlo.

TartanDMs · 23/10/2020 00:26

Remy is cool, I like it. Not keen on Rudy or Otis.

What about Ivan, Cobi, Jesse?

AlwaysLatte · 23/10/2020 00:37

Otto to me is a rice dish as our oldest couldn't say risotto when he was a toddler!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 23/10/2020 00:54

I think we have different taste in names (none of yours are my cup of tea, sorry!) so I'm not sure if this will help, but similiar sounding less traditional boys names I like are:
Orin, Leiv, Ezra, Ivo, Asa, Zev
and if you like Idris, I also love: Emrys, Macsen, Ioan, Iolo.

HardScare · 23/10/2020 01:03

Roman nn Ro

Caleb is also cool. well done awbabyspider

OldLeatherSuitcase · 23/10/2020 01:03

I love all the names on your list. I had Otto on mine.

Rudy is great, I know one and he's lovely.

daisypond · 23/10/2020 01:11

I like Jude. Not keen on the others.
Rudy if short for Rudolf or Rudolph would be OK, not as a name itself.

Krazynights34 · 23/10/2020 01:22

I like all your name options!

Otto - Love it! I only know one little Otto and wouldn't have thought of it as too popular at all. It's full of character.

Remy - Love this name.

Otis - I only know a couple. I don't think it's about to explode. It's nice. Quite hip.

Jude - I know one toddler Jude, but I can see if there are loads on your circle you might not want to choose this.

Rudy - I think of it as a nickname for Rudolph and so it sounds like an old man's name to me! It's my least favourite on your list. However I can imagine it would grow on me if I met an adorable baby Rudy.

Other name ideas:
Luca
Hugo
Bruno
Milo
Emil / Emile
Raphael (Raffi)
Gabriel
Ira
Ezra
Tobias
Anton
Felix

custardbear · 23/10/2020 02:21

I like Kit as a short boys name. I love Remy but think of it as a girls name )it was in our girls list when we had our boy) but think it's actually unisex

diddlediddle · 23/10/2020 06:51

The problem with your list is that they are all trendy type names so yes, they will be a bit popular. Not in a perennial Oliver way but in an Arlo jumping up the charts way. I know of several ottos and agree Otis could go that way. They both sound a bit like trying to pick an unusual name for the sake of it except that others have also had the same idea at the same time. I'm not saying that's your motivation but I think that's the impression. Names like Milo fall into this category for me too.

Fwiw I really like Jude, it's much nicer than the others. Agree with suggestions like Jesse, Ivo is sufficiently unusual. I also like Adam, what about Asa?

joystir59 · 23/10/2020 06:55

Don't call him Jeremy. I'm not keen on any of your choices but would choose Otto if I had German roots.

Jollypostman1991 · 23/10/2020 08:39

@diddlediddle you’ve explained what I mean by ‘popular but different’. I get that concern with Otto and Jude, perhaps because in our area it does crop up quite frequently. And I think Otis could go the same way. Arlo and Ezra definitely fall into that category where we live, so steering clear.

We’re really not into traditional names like Oliver, James, Thomas, Sam, Charlie etc. It’s personal taste but they just remind me of the many cousins/school friends I had with those names and blend into one big clump of ‘boy’. Gorgeous names but I’ve heard them too much to fall in love with them.

I think Remy/Remi is sticking most. It’s a very old french name, so not made up, but sounds fresher to my ears. Going to have a read through the other suggestions with DH later.

Otis was our pick for #2.
For #1 I liked Fergus and he liked Felix.
Others I like include Jethro, Emmett, Jonas, Forrest, Orson, Keanu, Heath, Beckett and Moss.

Katgolde · 23/10/2020 09:04

I like Otis and Jude.

Cole
Max
Sol
Zeb
Xander
Leo
Ray
Micah
Zac
Rex
Enzo

MikeUniformMike · 23/10/2020 09:23

The only one I like in the OP is Rudy.

Thefaceofboe · 23/10/2020 09:34

My favourites are Otis and Rudy. I agree with that you said about Otto too.

MmeCamenbert · 23/10/2020 09:39

In the French theme, ourson means bear and teddy bear! Quite close to Orson?

ShowOfHands · 23/10/2020 09:43

I like your names and considered them all. I ended up with a Raph (Raphael).

I also considered

Bram
Ivo
Inigo
Saul
Silas
Amos

muddylabrador · 23/10/2020 09:48

Tobias
Richmond
Gareth (Garry for short)

MikeUniformMike · 23/10/2020 12:00

You could use Remy short for Jeremiah.

diddlediddle · 23/10/2020 15:03

I actually don't mind Remy/Remi now I think about it. I knew a nice french man called Remi once. I agree it seems fresher than the others, and the main thing is if you like it then it will always be the right name!

FreeAcorns · 23/10/2020 15:21

@ShowOfHands I have exactly the same taste as you! Love your list!
I like Remy OP. I've been considering it for my shortlist too. Also love Ivo and Raphael.
