Indy Roan as boys name?

Husky1717 · 22/10/2020 08:21

Opinions on Indy Roan as a boys name please? It’s literally the only name I can get the Dad to agree on. Just worried its too “out there” for other people. Personally, I don’t want a popular name but think this might go too far?

Sounds like a native American horse.

Can't say I'm massively keen.

How about 'Nigel'?

MikeUniformMike · 22/10/2020 08:27

Indie as a girl's name often appears on the Baby Names threads. Can't say I like it
Roan - adjective, but it is better than Indy.

How about Raymond, Gary or Philip?

JemimaTiggywinkle · 22/10/2020 08:29

Roan is a type of horse, not a name. Rowan would be nice though.

I don’t like Indy for either gender personally, but I think it’s more commonly used for girls.

RusholmeRuffian · 22/10/2020 08:29

Rowan would be better than Roan. Roan is for horses.

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 22/10/2020 08:31

I'm not keen on them together, something about saying them out loud together is clunky.
Although he will only be known by his first name for the most past. I like Indy as a name in itself although Indiana is much nicer.

LittleMissLockdown · 22/10/2020 08:34

Indy Roan sounds like a breed of horse to be honest. I'd avoid Indy all together as its currently very popular for girls and if you like Roan why not go with Rowan?

Sexnotgender · 22/10/2020 08:37

Roan is horrible.

Indy just makes me think of Indy Ref.

It’s not a great combination.

Sunnydaysstillhere · 22/10/2020 08:44

My ds 19 is Roan. He is very happy with it!!

buggeroffvirus · 22/10/2020 08:44

Probably the odd one out but I love it!

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 22/10/2020 09:28

I think most people would consider Indy/ie to be a girls' name. I like Rowan, spelt with a w.

Whatsyourflava · 22/10/2020 09:43

I find both Indy and Roan very feminine sounding, probably because the Indie/India and Rowan's I know are girls

More importantly though, you say you "don't want a popular name" - both Indy and Roan are ones to avoid in that case

Whilst those particular spellings are very unusual, Indie with an IE is currently climbing really really fast up the charts for girls and is about to enter the top 150 names (see graph below using official figures):

names.darkgreener.com/#indie

Probably rising due to the Body Coach calling his daughter Indie.

Rowan, Rohan, Roman are all extremely trendy 2020 names and Rowan and Roman in particular are two of the fastest risers in the top 100 the last couple of years so variations best avoided if you want anything even remotely unusual.

I don't think you'll come across that many Indy/Indie's at the moment, but over the next few years expect to meet more and more. You'll certainly come across a lot of Rohan/Rowan/Roman/Roan/Ro_an type names though

Whatsyourflava · 22/10/2020 09:44

How about Indiana? I know a boy called that

SuitedandBooted · 22/10/2020 10:32

Indy sounds feminine, or a reference to music

Roan is a horse colour - "an even mixture of white and pigmented hairs that do not "grey out" or fade as the animal ages"

elfran · 22/10/2020 10:42

I don't find either feminine, and actually I think either Indy or Roan by itself is fine (though not my personal style).

Together, I just think of a horse, like others have said. To me, there is something very lightweight and almost disposable about two "modern" names together like that - I know it's a personal opinion and I don't mean to be rude, but I just prefer one element of a name at least be be more solid and traditional:

Indy Frederick
Roan Albert

... for example!

FelicityPike · 22/10/2020 10:45

No one will know about the Roan part as no one cares about middle names except from paperwork.
Indie is a girls name.

FelicityPike · 22/10/2020 10:46

Indy is horrid.
BUT it’s your future adult you’re naming....

BiBabbles · 22/10/2020 11:34

I don't think it's out there. Both of those have a popular feel to me - nicknames as given names is still pretty big I think, but I could be wrong.

For Indy, I think Indigo as a full name might be nice (having lived in Indiana, and knowing people from around there that make 'in-Diana' "jokes", I wouldn't use that as a name).

JuliaJohnston · 22/10/2020 11:36

It is genuinely awful.

CeibaTree · 22/10/2020 11:52

Rowan Indigo/Inigo would be a better option!

VenusClapTrap · 22/10/2020 12:03

Well it’s very ‘now’, but I don’t like it, sorry. It will date badly.

SeanCailleach · 22/10/2020 12:05

Indy is a very very very common nn for boys. Usually as a nn for the Punjabi names Inderjit, Inderpal, but I do know a smashing 10 yo who rocks Indy as nn for Indigo.

Flappingflamingo · 22/10/2020 12:08

I really really don't like the indy at all sorry, whether it's a girl or a boy, but I would assume it was a girl. Roan, I'm not sure, how do you pronounce it, is it like rowan? Another femine sounding name I don't like.
Sorry

CatteStreet · 22/10/2020 12:08

Is Roan supposed to be pronounced with two syllables, like Rowan? If i saw it written down I would say it to rhyme with moan.

Indy as a stand-alone name is a bit insubstantial and labouredly quirky. I actually despise the sneer of 'trying too hard', but this gets close to the concept.

FluffyEggsontoast · 22/10/2020 12:13

Indy and Roan quite girly sounding to me. Not good names to pick if you don't want a popular name. Indy is pretty unusual still but is getting increasingly popular for girls. There's variations of the name Roan everywhere at the moment, some of the fastest rising names already in the top 100. Click on the link above showing the graphs.

It sounds like your partner is being a bit difficult. Why don't you get out of list of the current top 100 names (as ones to avoid if you're wanting a less popular name) and ask him to draw up a list of 10 names he likes (avoiding all names from the top 100 list including spelling variations)

Sunnydaysstillhere · 22/10/2020 13:13

No w emphasis on my Roan. Ro an..
Have never met another one tbh.
