Indy Roan as boys name?

Husky1717 · 22/10/2020 08:21

Opinions on Indy Roan as a boys name please? It’s literally the only name I can get the Dad to agree on. Just worried its too “out there” for other people. Personally, I don’t want a popular name but think this might go too far?

@Sunnydaysstillhere

No w emphasis on my Roan. Ro an.. Have never met another one tbh.
You mean with a glottal stop in the middle?
IHateWasps · 22/10/2020 13:41

Indy sounds very feminine though I'm not a fan of it for anyone. Roan is lovely though. I attended school with a Roan and it really suited him.

FluffyEggsontoast · 22/10/2020 13:53

How about another 'I' name like Ivor?

Don't pick a name like Roan, (Rowan, Rohan, Roman, Ronan) if you're bothered about popularity

AlexaShutUp · 22/10/2020 14:00

Sorry, I think it's awful, but we obviously have very different taste in names. I can't imagine that the name will age well. But ultimately, you have to pick a name that feels right to you - it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks.

Husky1717 · 23/10/2020 10:33

Thank you to everyone that replied respectfully Smile

Not bothered about Indy sounding girly at all. There are girls with more boyish names and the other way around, but value the opinion.

Roan as a horse reference I totally get and have been arguing this point with husband for months so it's nice to see people thought the same (thought, without a google, would they know?)

Alternative suggestions? I like stuff like Remi, Albi, Parker, Bailey etc... he hates them all and is literally stuck on the above (yes yes compromise blah blah, suggestions please?)

I would think it was a girl b

SeanCailleach · 23/10/2020 12:36

As your husband likes the name, it's good to know why, where he heard it, what it means to him, what he wants it to mean for your child.

WeAreFromThePlanetDuplo · 23/10/2020 12:42

I think this might be one of those occasions where the parent is imagining themselves called this name, and thinking how much more cool and fabulous they would have turned out had they not instead grown up called Matthew. Grin

It's not really to my taste, but Indy or Indie are fine. I prefer Rowan or Rohan to Roan, definitely.

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 23/10/2020 12:49

Yes I knew that roan describes a particular colour of a horse, knew it before the internet was even a thing.

The names sound like someone is trying too hard to be "out there" and "different" when they are just daft.

I prefer all your other suggestions and I also like Rowan as a name. Don't let the father saddle (😀) your child with such a pretentious name.

Whatsyourflava · 23/10/2020 13:41

I like your alternative suggestions @Husky1717 Albi, Parker and Bailey are all nicer than Indy
Yes I agree about Roan and colour of horse and also think the name is too popular for your criteria now. Maybe show your husband a list of the top 100 names now and in particular the fastest rising ones. He'd be correct in thinking no one had the name when he was at school but times change and variations of this name are now very common

BumpLoading · 23/10/2020 13:48

I like Indy for a boy! I knew a boy with the name (no idea if it was short for anything or a stand alone name) and Indiana Jones (definitely not a feminine man) nn is Indy Grin

Similar names maybe Bodhi? Dylan? Kobe?

IckleBear · 23/10/2020 14:23

I think most would think Indy is a girls name even though the girls spelling is normally Indie?
I would go Indy Roman

FairFridaythe13th · 23/10/2020 14:24

I just saw ‘Indy Ref’...

Soubriquet · 23/10/2020 14:28

I know a couple of Indy’s and they are both girls so to me Indy is a girls name

I like Roan though, even if it is a horsey name

LittleTiger007 · 23/10/2020 15:37

Inigo is a good name (Robert Downey jr has a son with that name plus princess bride etc)
Indy is great as a nick name.
Rowan is said the same as Roan with nicer meaning

Ladderofyears · 23/10/2020 15:52

I think Indy is fine. There are lots of times when I have to check whether a name belongs to a male/female (I work in a job where I see a lot of people and see their names before I see them) and it doesn't bother me really though I wouldn't pick a unisex name myself.
I don't get Roan though. Is it pronounced to rhyme like moan? I think people will try and pronounce it like Rowan but it's a middle name so it doesn't matter too much.
I think it feels quite insubstantial as a name though.

Hrjelin · 23/10/2020 16:20

My best friend just named her daughter Indy. I like Rowan better than roan

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 23/10/2020 16:31

I think lots of people will know that roan is horse-related. Pony books are still really popular for 8-12 year olds.

I don't think they go together that well, and are maybe a bit too obviously "I was trying to pick something that isn't popular". I wouldn't choose Indy personally, but it's ok. I'd balance it with a one or three syllable name I think — Indy James, Indy Christopher, something like that.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 23/10/2020 16:33

Oh, and even if it is uncommon for boys, I would think there might be quite a few girls called Indie Rose.

PattyPan · 23/10/2020 18:37

I don’t consider either of those words to be given names Hmm

PattyPan · 23/10/2020 18:40

Pp suggestion of Inigo is a good one. Inigo Jones was a famous architect. Inigo Rowan sounds quite smart. What about Rory or Ron(ald)?
