Thoughts on Mark?

Think it’s quite a strong handsome name, will serve him well throughout life. Happens to be the name of both mine and DH grandfather. Middle name Joseph. What do people think?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Pinkypink · 22/10/2020 23:03

I much prefer it spelt Marc.

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 22/10/2020 23:04

Fine. Inoffensive but a bit dull. Prefer Marcus

Prefer Joseph Mark

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 22/10/2020 23:35

not needed, they’re only babies/toddlers for such a small portion of their lives.
Um that's your opinion but you understand that you can't just tell someone what to call their own child ? Hmm
I'm not very fond of some nicknames/shortenings myself (I never had one) but I accept that other people might feel differently to me and may want the choice....

Anyway (to get back on topic OP) I think Mark is a nice classic and underused now, but I think I slightly prefer the sound of the similar feeling, single syllable John or Hugh personally (perhaps because Mark has a sightly harsher sound when said aloud).

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 23/10/2020 01:08

Oh, and I think Mark goes well with Joseph - both are strong, traditional names and lovely to be able to honour both grandfathers with the one middle name too!

Squeakerfoot · 23/10/2020 02:11

Mark is not common at all now for kids and so he would be very unusual but with a classic name, which is definitely not a bad thing. And maybe it will make a comeback and be considered "cool" when he's an adult while all the current cool names will be out!

I guess the more contemporary sounding version is Marcus if you wanted to make it a bit more now. If you like Mark though, I would go with it.

LadyWithLapdog · 23/10/2020 02:23

Go with Marcus. As in Marcus Rashford. Hero.

Mrstwiddle · 23/10/2020 02:25

I like it with a c

alexdgr8 · 23/10/2020 02:28

a good solid classic name. go for it . and joseph too.
how can it be dated. it's timeless.
it's biblical, and classical. st mark's gospel. marcus aurelius.
at last, someone who doesn't want to name their child after a pop singer, or have a name more suited for a dog. or babyish.
well done OP and partner.

HumptyD · 23/10/2020 02:29

I don’t personally like it, Joseph Mark sounds nicer (in my opinion) then could be Joey when he’s a baby, like a little kangaroo Smile

Robinson1990 · 23/10/2020 08:13

@IamnotwhouthinkIam I never said no one couldn’t do that with their child. I was responding with my opinion to your suggestion I could use an unrelated cute nickname for a baby/toddler Mark.

Robinson1990 · 23/10/2020 08:14

@HumptyD unfortunately don’t like Joe so wouldn’t opt for Joseph as the first name.

DS has a very short name with no obvious nicknames, not Mark but not a million miles away. His nursery call him Markalicious and my sister calls him Markington Bear. You can make a nickname out of anything!

daisypond · 23/10/2020 08:59

It’s fine, but I prefer Marcus.

Branleuse · 23/10/2020 09:01

Its OK. I know a young Marcus, but no young Marks.
I think id have to nn him Mork

MrsBungle · 23/10/2020 09:04

Dull and dated in my opinion. Very 70s/80s like Tracey or Sharon. It also just makes me think of dirty mark or skid mark!

Prufrocks · 23/10/2020 09:06

@Pinkypink

I much prefer it spelt Marc.
I knew a “Marc with a C”

We called him Cark.

Cumbersome · 23/10/2020 09:06

Fabulous name.

Ignore the nay-sayers.

WithASpider · 23/10/2020 09:11

I like it. DB is Mark, and I know several others in the 35-45 age group. All lovely men.

Haven't heard of a baby one in years!

Katgolde · 23/10/2020 09:23

Short, simple, classic and underused. Much more interesting than some of the names of the moment.
