Thoughts on Mark?

Think it’s quite a strong handsome name, will serve him well throughout life. Happens to be the name of both mine and DH grandfather. Middle name Joseph. What do people think?

Despise it, but that’s a personal issue.

stillsomewhatsheldonesque · 21/10/2020 22:46

I like it. The Mark in my life has been such a steady soul.

user1493494961 · 21/10/2020 22:48

I think it would be better as a middle name.

garlictwist · 21/10/2020 22:49

Oh thank god. A normal name. Lovely. What refreshing change from all the Armadillos and Xebediahs that get suggested on here.

Orphlids · 21/10/2020 22:50

I really like it, and agree with your description of it as a strong, handsome name. Never met a horrid Mark. It’d be exciting to meet a baby Mark, as it’s an unusual choice now.

stillsomewhatsheldonesque · 21/10/2020 22:50

Indeed. I don’t quite get names that look like someone has hit a keyboard blindfolded.

Yours are quite tame Grin

Mark is a strong, second tier classic (first tier being always popular names like James, Thomas, William etc). It doesn't feel too dated to me because it's well used historically (in the Bible, by nobility, in Shakespeare and other classics), plus I know a young teenage Mark as well as men in their forties etc. It feels quite similar to names like Hugh or Luke etc to me - more popular 30-50 years ago but will always be well known as they are simple, straight forward and suit all ages. Only problem might be there is no obvious nickname (Marky sounds odd to me, unlike Huey for some reason).

Abracadabra12345 · 21/10/2020 23:18

I like it though prefer it to be spelled wit a c: Marc

BinkyBoinky · 21/10/2020 23:22

Boringly OKish, like John or David. But not as bad as Gary or Stephen! It's still that kind of vein to me.

Cleebope2 · 21/10/2020 23:26

Beautiful baby boy name, go for it!

Enko · 21/10/2020 23:27

It's ok.

KittiesInsane · 21/10/2020 23:32

Good name as long as your surname isn’t something like Black, Brown, Chalk, White...

ImaSababa · 21/10/2020 23:37

Not a fan. Why name a child after a dirty smudge?

NiceGerbil · 21/10/2020 23:43

Because it was in the Bible first and is a totally standard name in a countries that are mainly Christian Grin

Matthew mark luke and John...

Mat = wipe your feet
Mark =smudge
Luke... Dunno
John = toilet

!!!

It's a great, solid, classic name, but it was very very popular too recently to be ready for a revival. There are SO MANY Marks in their thirties and forties; there are so many at my workplace that they are uniformly referred to by their initials or their surnames. Your child will have the same name as many of their friends' dads.

Peter has a similar vibe for me, and had its most recent heyday with a generation above.

Robinson1990 · 22/10/2020 09:39

@IamnotwhouthinkIam why does there need to be a nickname for Mark anyway? It’s a one syllable easy to say name.

OP posts:
CremantCharlie · 22/10/2020 09:57

Classy, timeless, strong name. I like it.

MikeUniformMike · 22/10/2020 13:57

I'd much rather names like Mark, John, Andrew, Paul than the Archie, Alfie and Theo type names too.

MikeUniformMike · 22/10/2020 14:00

Ha @Robinson1990, this is MN. You need a long version of the name so that he can use the formal version when he is a high court judge.

I just find that many people like to use a cutesy nn for for their child when they are a baby/toddler (and it usually ends in a "ie/y" sound so Sammy, Teddy, Huey etc). I suppose you could always use something completely unrelated like Pip, Bean etc, though if you wanted to!

ButterflyOfFreedom · 22/10/2020 19:38

We almost had a Joseph Marc (we had a girl!).
I like it.

Robinson1990 · 22/10/2020 20:52

@IamnotwhouthinkIam not needed, they’re only babies/toddlers for such a small portion of their lives.

StuckInTheMiddleWithTwo · 22/10/2020 21:01

I like it but couldn't use it because it's a family name.

joystir59 · 22/10/2020 21:04

Beautiful names and a great combination

foxtiger · 22/10/2020 21:54

I like it!
