It's not for me. It makes me think of a weasley, snotty, whiny posh boy. It hold the same space in my brain as the name Edmund.
The thing with most names though, is that after a baby has been named something for a while, everyone gets used to it. They start associating the name with the baby instead of anything for anyone else.
I think is the case for Edgar. You don't hear it often enough to have have other strong connotations, like Riley for example, that are unshakable.
