Looks like my name got a comeback whether deserved or not.

TheVanguardSix · 19/10/2020 16:34

I love EE-ray-nuh. Not Eye-reen though.

EhUp · 19/10/2020 16:38

I'm not a fan but agree it is probably due a come back as its same era as many other names which are increasing in popularity (Elsie, Edith, Ada, Nancy etc)

Standrewsschool · 19/10/2020 16:38

@maddiemookins16mum

No, it reminds me of older women in housecoats and curlers.

I know a teenager who has Irene as her middle name.

lazylockdowner · 19/10/2020 17:30

Hope not it's my ex mother in laws name and she a awful woman

SilenceOfTheEmu · 19/10/2020 17:32

I think it’s cute. It was my grandma’s name and she was nicknamed ‘rene’ (pronounced ree-knee)

Thymeout · 19/10/2020 17:41

You could spell it Eirene, ancient Greek for peace, if you wanted to get rid of the frumpy old lady associations.

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 19/10/2020 17:42

It was my grandmothers name too - she was a difficult northern woman of house coat and set hair type, judging other woman on her street who didn't have clean front steps.

She was fabulous.

We didn't consider it for DD, but it doesn't sound too old lady compared to the Ivy/Iris/Daisy types.

I also think Rita needs a come back.

apumpkinaday · 19/10/2020 17:43

I have an Erin so I do like Irene

Bouledeneige · 19/10/2020 17:44

Erin is lovely. But not Irene.

But then I also don't like Maud or Winifred either - they are just not lyrical or pretty words.

SlopesOff · 19/10/2020 18:12

It is also likely to turn into Reeny at school.

It is the sort of name that people change to something else as soon as they are old enough.

Kanaloa · 19/10/2020 21:07

I like it a lot. I know one child who has this as a middle name, her first name is very old fashioned as well, similar to Maud/Edith type of name. It really suits her. Reminds me of Irene from Malory Towers.

oncloudnine · 19/10/2020 21:24

Hmm it sure if I'm keen, but I do like the European version - Irena or Irina. Think it's Russian but not entirely sure.

VenusClapTrap · 19/10/2020 21:52

It’s a yes from me. I also like Eileen, and Denise.

Firebird83 · 20/10/2020 14:47

Definitely due a comeback. Iris and Ivy are popular so Irene could be next!

Brighterthansunflowers · 20/10/2020 16:24

I think so!

MikeUniformMike · 20/10/2020 20:13

Irene pron. I reenee is lovely.

morethanmeetstheeye · 20/10/2020 21:39

Yes. It's a beautiful name

pilates · 20/10/2020 21:43

Hope not

Burnthurst187 · 20/10/2020 21:45

No

Ellovera2 · 20/10/2020 21:48

I love it. In my 20s with a friend my age called Irene. (I-reen)

Tillygetsit · 20/10/2020 22:38

Not keen tbh but it probably will come back. Love Vera though.

MilkandWater · 20/10/2020 22:47

My aunt too, but I’ve always disliked the nickname Rene (Reenee). I think I must have been in my late teens before realising she was actually Irene (which she hated).

To me Irene wears a nylon housecoat and rollers, chainsmokes and hoiks her bosom a lot about ‘er at number twenty being no better than she ought to be.

ShowOfHands · 21/10/2020 07:23

It was my Grandma's middle name (first name Muriel) and she died last year aged 94. She was kind and gentle so only positive associations here.

She was also Northern and it does have a Northern feel doesn't it? The other one I know is from Salford and is "Our Reenee"!
