Argyll

Honest thoughts on this as a name for either gender. We have a very lovely association to Argyll and I recently met a girl named this and I thought it was so sweet. I feel it could work on a male too.

If it doesn't work as a first, perhaps as a middle?

My first assumption would that it would be a boys name.

Speaking as a non-Scottish person, I know how to pronounce this as a place name, but when I saw it out of context (e.g. here as a baby name) it took me a couple of seconds to work out what it was, so you could get some weird pronunciations.
But that could just be my baby brain!

As a first name, I suppose it depends on how you feel about place names as personal names. If you'd call a baby 'Cornwall' or 'Yorkshire' then why not Argyll?
Parts of Argyll are very scenic and historic, but I'm sure you already know that.

If it helps, in 2019, there were three boys named 'Argyll' or 'Argyle' in Scotland, and one girl named 'Argyle'.

But obviously, your baby, you choice of name.

Gosh, OP on reading back my post it sounds impolite. I honestly did not mean it to be.
I don't live in Argyll but it's not that far away and it's a very familiar place name to me. It's a former county and a present-day local authority. Therefore it does seem a rather strange choice for a baby first name. That's all I wanted to say.

I had to google the pronunciation as I assumed it was pronounced "our-gil". (I've never been to the place)

After hearing it how it's supposed to be pronounced i dont think I'm keen. Maybe as a middle name?

I did rather think of the Argyll and Bolton Wanderers (Sutherland Highlanders)

Plymouth Argyle and Argyle sweaters. And Argyll boots.

I'm sure you could find nicer names linked to Argyll.

I think it is more suited to a male as it sounds more Masculine

When my sister had her first child she and her DH had enormous difficulty deciding. Some of her ideas were a bit 'out there.'

In the end she asked herself and DH 'would I like to have this name?' It rapidly removed some of the more unique suggestions.'

I know a few men called Argyll but they're all 40's or older. DH did want to call one of our sons this but I vetoed (even though we live in Argyll). I don't dislike the name, just didn't want it for my son iykwim?

'Sock' is a nice middle name.

The only Argyle I've ever heard of was the limo driver in Die Hard. Not seen it spelled your way before. But maybe I've seen the word so many times I haven't noticed if that makes sense.

As a Scot who used to work just off Argyle Street (no not that bit) it'd be a strong no from me. Argyleshire is a beautiful area though.

When I read it, the first thing that comes to my mind is ‘Argyll and Bute Council’.

It sounds more masculine to me.
