Lincoln or Wyatt

I'm almost 5 months pregnant with a boy (our first child) and we're really struggling with names!

We loved Reuben but a close family member has used it so don't think thats an option any more. We have a long list of 'maybes' but no 'yes we love it' names.

My current 2 favourites are Lincoln and Wyatt, what do people think? Any other suggestions welcome! We ideally want a recognisable but not top 30 type name.

I was leaning towards Wyatt but the lack of nickname is putting me off.

My favourite is Wyatt out of your options.

What about Rafferty, similar qualities to Rueben but offers the nickname Raffy or Raf/ Rafa? X

viques · 13/10/2020 16:30

I automatically think Wyatt Earp , who I have just googled. Goodness, he led an exciting life, and had a very wonderful moustache.

Unfortunately I am now picturing your baby with an equally splendid moustache, I advise you not to google, once seen etc.

viques · 13/10/2020 16:33

Why would you need a nickname? It’s not exactly a mouthful (unlike the moustache! Sorry)

If you really needed one then Watt would do.

Trufflepuffpuff · 13/10/2020 16:33

I'm not keen - Reuben is a nice name but Wyatt and Lincoln are both surnames to me. They're quite different in style to Reuben. But perhaps we just have different taste in names so not sure how useful this is!

MarshmallowsOnToast · 13/10/2020 16:35

My favourite was Evan but DP vetoed.

everyonesmama · 13/10/2020 16:50

Lincoln

KnightsofColumbusThatHurt · 13/10/2020 16:51

Neither. But if pushed I would choose Lincoln out of the two.

TheVanguardSix · 13/10/2020 16:52

I like Wyatt.

Remona · 13/10/2020 17:02

Are you American?

I’m sorry but I don’t like either. In fact I’d go so far as to say they’re awful. Wyatt is Wyatt Earp and Lincoln is either Abraham Lincoln or the American Lincoln car.

Babies are cute and gorgeous whether they’re a Wyatt or a Kevin or a Merlin. However, just think of all their years at school and how miserable their life will be because the other children take the mickey out of their name. Imagine when they’re a brain surgeon or a high court judge. You’ve got to think longer term and look at the bigger picture. Don’t just think about the tiny baby but the person they’ll become.

LottieDot · 13/10/2020 17:41

@Remona not American but do like a lot of their style names. I think your comment is a bit OTT to be honest, not sure why a child would get the mickey out of them for being called Lincoln, its not like its a particularly unusual name!

@viques because DH has an annoying habit of shortening everyone's name! I think he'd end up calling him Wy which is off putting.

@mamah2019 I like Rafferty but DH says its "too posh" for us haha. He's liking Rowan at the moment which I love but worried about the Rowan/Roman surge at the moment.

It’s not unusual? I’ve never heard of a Lincoln in my life. I don’t know a Lincoln. I’ve never met a Lincoln. I’ve never heard of a Lincoln.

Just because it’s a city / surname of a long dead American president / an American luxury car, that doesn’t make it a common name.

You asked in your OP “what do people think?” I gave you my opinion. If you don’t want honest opinions then don’t ask.

Children can be cruel. They will take the piss out of the slightest thing. If you don’t realise that, you were never bullied.

mylittleavalon · 13/10/2020 18:07

I like Lincoln and Wyatt. What about Everett , Clark or Clayton?

LottieDot · 13/10/2020 18:14

@Remona it ranked at 141 last year just below Nicholas so not particularly unusual by my standards, but perhaps yours are different. I was unfortunately severely bullied as a teen but not for my name, and in fact dont know anyone who was, but I live in quite a diverse area so maybe we're more used to names outside the top 20. I also work in education so am aware of how kids can be.

I appreciate the opinions but was shocked that it was seen as an obvious bullying name, as I just don't see it personally.

@mylittleavalon Love Everett! I just can't see us using it for some reason but I really do like it.

I prefer Lincoln of the two. I live in Canada where this style of name is very common, not really my personal taste but Bennett seems popular and gives an easy nickname.

user1493494961 · 13/10/2020 18:41

I don't like either, although you have brought back memories of my favourite Lincoln biscuits when I was a child.

anotherboyontheway · 13/10/2020 18:49

Currently expecting baby boy number 2 and both of those are on our list as we love American style names, so other names you may consider:
Chase
Cody
Parker
Carter
Hunter
Also I highly doubt anyone would get bullied for being called Wyatt or Lincoln as they aren't wildly unusual and school classes have more of a wide range of names these days unlike when I was at school with 5 Jacks and 4 Emma's and all those other popular names so don't listen to that rubbish!!xx

BiBabbles · 13/10/2020 19:22

I have a cousin named Wyatt, I don't think he ever had a nickname.

Out of the two, I lean towards Lincoln, mainly because I hear the Why part of Wyatt a bit much.

Other similar names: Tyler, Garrett, Dylan, Franklin, Grayson, Gratian, Hudson, Oakley, Cory

MikeUniformMike · 13/10/2020 20:04

Of the two, Lincoln, by far. It will be Linc though.

I wouldn't use Reuben, nothing much against it other than it seems a bit insubstantial, but because people seem to spell it Rueben, then you have Ruben and Rubin, and all the similar names like Robin, Roman, Rowan, Ruan etc that are currently popular.

DramaAlpaca · 13/10/2020 20:52

I love Lincoln.

Not mad on Wyatt though.

VenusClapTrap · 13/10/2020 23:32

Neither

danascully96 · 13/10/2020 23:46

I actually really dislike Rueben sandwiches, so I would not choose that name anyway.

I'm American, so there names aren't unusual to me, although I can see why the might be in the UK.

Of the two, they're about equal for me. No obvious bullying comes to mind, unless people are going to interrogate you about Abe Lincoln's presidency, which I highly doubt Grin

American style names:
Chase
Mason
Hudson
Blake
Wesley
Forrest (you may get a lot of Forrest Gump jokes with this one)
Lennox
Owen
Connor
Graham?
Leo?
Grant
Flynn
Sawyer
Bennett
Asher
Ash

? next to names I'm not sure are exclusively "American." The American name that I really hate is Hunter because I'm vegetarian and I think it sounds hypermasculine, so that's one I would strongly urge you not to use.

Congratulations, OP!

danascully96 · 13/10/2020 23:46

these* not there

Kanaloa · 13/10/2020 23:57

I think Lincoln is really nice, I'm not as keen on Wyatt for some reason, I just think it doesn't sound as good as Lincoln.
