Lincoln or Wyatt

I'm almost 5 months pregnant with a boy (our first child) and we're really struggling with names!

We loved Reuben but a close family member has used it so don't think thats an option any more. We have a long list of 'maybes' but no 'yes we love it' names.

My current 2 favourites are Lincoln and Wyatt, what do people think? Any other suggestions welcome! We ideally want a recognisable but not top 30 type name.

I was leaning towards Wyatt but the lack of nickname is putting me off.

Sorry but I think both are awful

Crankley · 14/10/2020 00:44

Really both are awful.

AlrightBabby · 14/10/2020 01:02

I'm not keen on either, they seem a bit insubstantial and 'drippy' but out of the two, Lincoln is better.

LottieDot · 14/10/2020 07:47

@MikeUniformMike yeah the spelling issues are definitely a negative with Reuben, its what's put me off my previous favourite name Isaac, would get Issac.

@danascully96 thank you theres a lot on there that we have on our longer list, Leo, Flynn and Asher being my favourites ❤

Thanks everyone, I dont think either of these are 'the one' hopefully we land on something in the next few months.

I prefer Lincoln.
I usually dislike surname type makes but I have a soft spot for Lincoln, probably because my mother taught brothers Lincoln, Warwick and Leicester back in the 80s...

MikeUniformMike · 14/10/2020 11:11

@LottieDot, you'll get spelling issues with most names, or people will use a slight variation on it.

Reuben will get Ruby for example. Flynn will get Finn. Leo Lee or Leon, Asher Ash etc.

Just be aware of the pitfalls.

Main thing is how does the Firstname Surname sound? Middle names are rarely used, and generally outside a close circle, both first name and surname are used.

MercyBodle · 15/10/2020 01:42

Lincoln of those 2, definitely. I like Leo and Flynn from your new list more.

I guess either might be ok if you lived in America but a bit of an odd choice otherwise. Agree with pp that you need to think of your child as an adult and consider how well a name ages.

SeanCailleach · 15/10/2020 06:05

I love Wyatt as I know a very sweet and charming teenaged one.
He does get called Wye, which is fine. Wit and Witty would also be very positive nicknames if you need one.

MimiDaisy11 · 15/10/2020 06:21

Not my kind of choices but I think Lincoln sounds better. While I've never met a Wyatt I just recall less than positive characters from American TV. I think it sounds cheap. Although Lincoln is unusual I think it could work and disagree about the comments about bullying. I have an odd and unusual surname and bullies couldn't really do anything with it. I'm not sure what you could do with it other than call him Abe which is quite dull.

Highfalutinlootin · 15/10/2020 06:35

American checking in here to say you have picked two of just about the most American names out there. That said, I've never met or heard of anyone with the first name Lincoln in my entire life, and I think it's an extremely odd choice for a name. It would be like naming a baby Churchill. Go with Wyatt.

Some other very American, similar names:
Asa
Mason
Tanner
Walker
Jasper
Beau
Cotton
Ford
Gray

Love Reuben (and know a 10yr old by that name), know an Isaac and used to have a good friend called Lincoln (Linc). All good names and no more spelling problems than any other name so just pick the one you love most.

JustanotherTuesday · 15/10/2020 09:30

I prefer Lincoln if I had to choose one. I love American names. I like Asher, Flynn, Hunter and Corey. Why not wait until he is born and see what he looks like. My youngest son had five different names as we couldn't decide. In the end we choose a name we had never considered as it seemed to suit him.

I googled Wyatt Earp, that is a fantastic moustache!! Props to the guy.

Of the two, I probably prefer Lincoln. Someone mentioned Mason which is also quite nice.

Pixilicious · 15/10/2020 17:37

Both pretty awful put Lincoln if I was forced

oiboi · 15/10/2020 17:43

Love wyatt.

What do you think about jethro or Jed? I love both and think they have similar vibe and I love them

oiboi · 15/10/2020 17:45

Also if you like Isaac we've got one who's called Ike day to day.

oiboi · 15/10/2020 17:46

Love Asher and asa too.

Oh goodness I need to get some pets to name.

Wish I'd spent more time on here before I named mine

Flappingflamingo · 15/10/2020 20:58

I much prefer Isaac, it's my son's name, never been mispelt

garlictwist · 15/10/2020 21:03

I used to know an American called Barrett, that was actually his first name believe it or not. That sounds like the sort of thing you're after.

MacaroonMama · 15/10/2020 21:12

My middle son is Emerson, I suppose vaguely after the American poet, but also we liked the sound of the name and it suits him. His friends/brothers call him Emmy or Emms. Wonder if you like that?

anothernamereally · 15/10/2020 22:03

Both Wyatt and Lincoln are old English names not American ones - although I accept that they're popular over there.
I think they're both lovely names op
