The Name Teddy

What's your thoughts? I love the name Teddy but I worry he won't thank me later for it when he's older but don't like the name Theodore or Edward and a teddy for short x

I really like Teddy

And actually think it'd still be fine on a teenager / adult, especially as there are so many about now, there will be a generation of Teddys where its not a babyish name but a common boys name.

pinkhousesarebest · 11/10/2020 22:04

I know a gorgeous mid-20s Teddy. Never occurred to me to think it was a remotely babyish name.

Luckingfovely · 11/10/2020 22:09

I love it, for any age. But totally agree with putting a more traditional name on the BC so he has the option when he's older.

SMaCM · 11/10/2020 22:10

We have an adult Teddy in our family. Never thought anything of it.

ShinyGreenElephant · 11/10/2020 22:15

Its cute but so, so common at the moment. I'm not one for wanting yoonike names but I honestly know at least 10 Teddys under the age of 5 just from DDs baby classes and friends kids. I also think it would be a bit of a turn off in a grown man having a name that sounds so cutesy.

AllPlayedOut · 11/10/2020 22:40

It's awful. Almost ok as a nickname but much too twee. I met a two year old called Teddy and it still seemed ridiculous on him, let alone a grown man.

mydogmike · 11/10/2020 23:02

Thanks everyone , I like Freddie too but that's so common

I know a Teddy who's about to turn 19 and he does not like his name at all. He can't even shorten it to Ted as he doesn't like that. He was named Teddy, not Theodore, unfortunately.

emilybrontescorsett · 11/10/2020 23:46

I think Teddy does actually suit a teenager. I see no difference to Freddie or Alfie really.

calimommy · 12/10/2020 00:00

My friend called her son Teddy and being honest I think it's absolutely lovely as a nick name but ridiculous to have someone formally as Teddy for their entire life. 8 yrs later and I still think it's a silly name and most of the time I think you get used to names after a while 🙈 Her father was Ted (for short -his name was Edward) so that's why she wanted Teddy. I have obviously never shared my thoughts with her! And I only commented here because you asked.

FenellaMaxwell · 12/10/2020 07:14

I love it, but it is a nickname and I think it’s a weird choice if you don’t like either of the names it’s short for.

Whatsyourflava · 12/10/2020 07:17

I think it's a great name. I know people have an issue with it on here but in reality there's a fair few Teddy's about now. In 30 years time, being a 30 year old Teddy won't be a shock to anyone at all. It'll just be a nice name

Turtleturtle81 · 12/10/2020 09:41

Makes me think of Teddy (Theodore) Roosevelt.

FelicityPike · 12/10/2020 09:43

Teddy is way more common now than Freddie.
Try to remember it’s an adult you’re naming for life, not just a gorgeous wee baby boy.

DoveGreylove · 12/10/2020 09:44

Sorry OP but I can't stand the name "Teddy". The poor child will grow up and have to be called Teddy at a job interview. Think about that.

The name Edward is much nicer and you can call him Teddy as a nickname whilst he's young? Then he will have the choice to use his grown up name.

I was thinking of calling my baby Edward if it was a boy and quite a few people asked "will he be Teddy then?" I don't really understand the fascination with it.

zigaziga · 12/10/2020 09:57

One of my most disliked names as a stand-alone name. It’s also become very popular and I know of more Teddys than any other name but because they’re a mixture of Edwards, Theodores, Teds and Teddys I don’t think this shows on the lists so much.

It is cute on a baby but I would really not want to be an 18 year old Teddy let alone a middle aged accountant called Teddy.

I guess if you don’t like Edwards it’s out but for me Edward is a fantastic name.. Teddy was cute and little and then a choice later of Ted, Ed, Eddie etc.

fairislecable · 12/10/2020 10:03

I am related to a child called Theodore on the bc, as his Mum wanted him to have options (she shortened her own name as an adult).

She has always used Teddy and as he has grown older tried to alter it to Ted but he has told her he likes Teddy and that’s what he will answer to.

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 12/10/2020 10:07

If you look at the ONS stats, plenty of babies registered just as Teddy last year, so he wouldn’t be the only one in his generation. It’s cute but does seem to be a very “on trend” name which I think will date quite quickly. Agree it’s cutesy but Ted is fine for an adult.

mydogmike · 12/10/2020 10:17

Thank you everyone , think we will not use Teddy - you all pretty much said what my thoughts were!

Now to think of a boys name ... boys names are so hard!

☹️

My almost 14 year old is Teddy. And that's his birth certificate name

He suited it as a baby and he suits it now - and he's very much a tall, typical teenager! Friends call him Teddy or Ted as do we. He calls himself Teddy usually. He likes his name and - contrary to what mumsnet masses might like to tell you - he has never once been 'bullied' for his name or teased.

CaffiSaliMali · 12/10/2020 10:28

I think you can use Teddy as short for Edmund, Edwin or Edgar, not just Edward and Theodore. I really like Edmund.

I wouldn't use just Teddy though, cute on a baby and toddler but he will likely prefer something more grown up as he gets older.

SylvanianFrenemies · 12/10/2020 10:32

If you are against Edward, Edwin etc, how about Ted? I think you can get away with it as a full name, and it obviously lends itself to Teddy.

MotheringShites · 12/10/2020 10:34

What about Theo on the BC?

SumAndSubstance · 12/10/2020 16:21

I don’t think it will be embarrassing to be an adult Teddy for this generation, mostly because every other boy under the age of five seems to be called Ted or Teddy. I do think it will date because of that.

Pineapple30 · 12/10/2020 16:43

@RolyPolyBatFaced thank you for posting this!! My little one is called Teddy and I'm hoping he grows up and likes his name too.
