Everyone, pls help me choose a name. I named my baby girl “Ariadne “ cuz it is less popular , however, it is hard for people to pronounce it right. I have been thinking to change her name( she is 9 months old) . Any ideas, please? I like Clare , Clara .....

If you really really want to change her name then do so.
Yes Clare and Clara are sweet names but there's nothing wrong with Ariadne and you can't have just chosen it because it's unusual.

You may find "problems" with other names (oh no, I'm worried Clare is too plain shall I change it. . . Oh no, Clara is really picking up in popularity as is Lara, shall I change it?) Etc.

If the main thing that's concerning you is other ppl having pronunciation issues correct them politely and everyone will move on.

Garcellesaidwhaaat · 10/10/2020 15:55

I would stick with Ariadne, it's beautiful, but if it's keeping you up at night change it.

violetbanga · 10/10/2020 15:57

Arry Add Knee?

PoodleMoth · 10/10/2020 18:53

Ariadne is beautiful as are a lot of Greek names and all useable. I would stick with it people will get there!

olderthanyouthink · 10/10/2020 19:22

I love Ariadne! Love mythology too!

Aria is a nice shortening and more common but still not very.

I read a book that had a character called Hippolyta (another Greek name) and I think she went by a shortening like Polly

Lillysnotroses · 10/10/2020 19:25

@Esspee

You liked the name so why not leave it but call her Aria for short.
I think this too. She’s 9 months old it’s a bit late to change names now.
olderthanyouthink · 10/10/2020 19:29

Also my daughters name is now annoyingly common and is three letters and people still fuck it up, mixing it up with other similar (because they're also three letters Hmm) names or the masculine versions (doesn't help that I refuse to stick bows on her and she wouldn't let me anyway Grin) making it longer too.

My name has some extra letters in it and people miss pronounce it or misspell it but most people who matter know it and everyone else doesn't matter that much

MimiDaisy11 · 10/10/2020 19:58

It's a nice name. I wasn't familiar with it but took me a few moments to understand how to say it. I think the issue is that in English so many words aren't written exactly like they're pronounced, often with letters at the end which aren't pronounced, whereas this one quite helpfully is exactly as written.

I think the main issue with changing at 9 months is how you feel about it. I think babies are more adaptable. Will you be able to change and feel that it suits her now after using this name for months?

PlanBea · 10/10/2020 20:46

I think it's a beautiful name, in fact I've just added it to my shortlist after reading it here! I would have been gutted if I'd found out my mum had changed my name to something plain because people couldn't be bothered to read my (beautiful) name correctly. Another vote for keeping it as it is.

Pieceofpurplesky · 10/10/2020 22:10

It's a gorgeous name - don't change it as she will love it as she gets older (I know a 14 YO one).
Call her Ari or Aria

S111n20 · 10/10/2020 22:33

Stick with it it’s beautiful.

Lollypop4 · 10/10/2020 22:39

I like different names 3/4 of my DC have different names and everyone mispronounces, I don't get it as they are pretty easy BUT I'm afraid I don't know how to pronounce your DDs name...

Elbowgreaseneeded · 10/10/2020 22:39

I agree with others. At 9 months she will recognise her name so if you want to make it more recognisable Aria would be a good compromise.

Passmethecrisps · 10/10/2020 22:40

Honestly stick with it. I cannot understand why people are finding it so challenging - but that is their issue. It is a lovely name and there are no issues with its greek history.

9 months is fairly old to be changing names and I think you would probably live to regret it

MJMG2015 · 10/10/2020 22:54

She's 9 months, changing her name now is NOT a problem.

@lizye

How do YOU say her name?

I can't imagine anyone having a problem with her name , let alone several people. Is English not your first language? It's the only reason I can think of why others are struggling with it.

percheron67 · 10/10/2020 23:06

Ariadne is a beautiful name. Surely, there is only one pronunciation?

hettie555 · 10/10/2020 23:29

Clare and Clara are quite boring and out-dated names in my opinion.
It doesn't help that I know a Clare and a Clara and they are both boring and thick (I know them through work).
I love your original choice and agree with shortening it.

Ellmau · 10/10/2020 23:33

Ariadne is a fab name.

Sevo7 · 10/10/2020 23:43

I’ve never heard it before but have to say it’s absolutely gorgeous and has gone straight to the top of my girls name list (not that I’m having anymore)

SenorFrog · 11/10/2020 00:23

I know how to pronounce it and I think most people probably do, those who don't will only need to be corrected once. I love Ari as a nickname..

Sometimes people who didn’t learn second language as a young children struggle with it. As a deaf person, I struggle pronouncing anything beyond two syllables and American English is the the only language I learned
lizye · 11/10/2020 14:58

@SeanCailleach Thank you for bringing so much infos. After reading all the post, I’m more confident to stick with this name. My DD has only gong out few times( to pediatric clinic)since the pandemic outbreak . We live in an Asian community in New York, I agree with someone saying that English is not their first language that’s why they can’t pronounce Ariadne right. Btw, I don’t know why it’s a mistake time. Like now it’s 9:56am, I guess it would be a different time after I post.

@lizye now we can understand! Mumsnet is mainly UK, and Ireland. Greek names like Ariadne are more widely recognised here than in New York. But you have had extreme lockdown, even worse than here. When this craziness is over, and Ariadne goes to nursery, the people she sees every day will know her name. They will love it.

Are you Chinese Asian? Does she have Chinese name that you also use?

If you decide to change it, I am not sure what the law is in New York. Someone on here might know. It may be different to UK.

The time isn't wrong, it was 2:56 in the afternoon here when you posted at 9:56 New York time. It's 10 at night now!

Best wishes!

Disfordarkchocolate · 11/10/2020 22:14

I love this name. It's far too underused.

lizye · 12/10/2020 05:37

@SeanCailleach OMG!really ! This is an UK website! I thought everyone here are American. Wow, I can’t tell we are in different country until you point out. Yay, I’m Chinese American. I haven’t given my dd Chinese name yet, maybe one day when I take her to China. But I have decided to keep her name and call her a nick name Aria after everyone’s suggestions
