Everyone, pls help me choose a name. I named my baby girl “Ariadne “ cuz it is less popular , however, it is hard for people to pronounce it right. I have been thinking to change her name( she is 9 months old) . Any ideas, please? I like Clare , Clara .....

@SeanCailleach
I don’t really get why you are saying it’s a admin nightmare.
As I have changed my DD name and the name is inserted in space 17 it’s not exactly hard to point to that box , it’s a lot easier than deed poll. As it’s officially changed with the registry.
Once you have child passport they use that as their main form of ID anyway.

You must do what makes you happy although not changing it because like others have said, people are mispronouncing the name.

MikeUniformMike · 09/10/2020 18:33

Don't change it @lizye, it's really nice, not out there or anything.

If you change it to Clare there will be the Claire/Clair misspellings.
If you change it to Clara it will be Cara/Lara/Ciara/Chiara type problems/

We know an Ariadne too, she is always known as Addy

Firebird83 · 09/10/2020 19:19

Ariadne is beautiful! Don’t change it!

RonaLisa · 09/10/2020 19:21

It's a lovely name, and I'm struggling to see how it could be pronounced, other than the way it is.

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 09/10/2020 20:08

Please don't change it - it's so beautiful!! If my next baby had been a girl it's what we'd have gone for

FourPlasticRings · 09/10/2020 20:11

Gorgeous name. I wouldn't change it just to be one in a crowd of Claras.

RuthW · 09/10/2020 20:16

Ariadne is lovely and not difficult to pronounce at all.

lizye · 10/10/2020 02:18

The reason I wanna change her name bc people call her like ‘Adrian’or ‘ari-a -don’ . Only few people got her name right. I don’t wanna cause her more trouble in future when she grows up. But I have see many people here vote for this name that really makes my mind to keep it

@RonaLisa Well, since she was born on Jan 1st, people( even pediatrician and nurses) call her Adrian or Ar-ee -ar-don. She is a girl but all these people call her a boy’s name .

I don't see why it's hard for people to say. Sod them. You liked the name so stick with it if you still like.

You can't account for everyone so sod them.

Toontown · 10/10/2020 03:17

I've got a hard to pronounce name but people get it. Much prefer my name than a generic Clare/clara

blueberrypie0112 · 10/10/2020 03:20

Can you give her a nickname? My real name is Angela but everyone calls me Angie

quarlly · 10/10/2020 03:24

How do you pronounce it? I haven't heard it before so would probably do it wrong first time. But should mean we learn a new name and then get it right the next time x

SEE123 · 10/10/2020 04:16

Beautiful name OP, I'd keep it.
Yes correcting people is annoying, and I shorten my own horrendously long and "ethnic" sounding name sometimes, but actually as I get older I make less allowances for people being lazy and not even attempting to say it correctly. Quite fond of my name now as it's quite unique.

lizye · 10/10/2020 04:37

@quarlly so the correct pronunciation is /ˌæriˈ æ(d) ni/

lizye · 10/10/2020 04:49

I have been correcting her name to people over times. And one more concern is that Ariadne is also a name of Greek goddess. Can we use a goddess name from Greek history ? When I named her, I didn’t even realize if it is a issue.
Does people care about this ?

Ariadne Is a beautiful name. You might regret changing it if you came across someone else with that name in the future.

SeanCailleach · 10/10/2020 06:57

@lizye Greek gods and godesses are like fairy tales, not religion. No-one will mind you using the names. Anyone that knows the names will be pleased - they may say Ariadne wasn't even a godess, just a princess.

If the people getting your baby's name wrong are all medical people, it sounds like lockdown has meant you haven't had a group of people that got used to the name. Are you getting to any mum and baby groups? Do you have family round you, and do they say the name right? What does the baby's dad think?
Lastly, Adriane is a girl's name, also Adria , Adriana and Adrienne, so if someone reads the name wrong they may be dyslexic or need glasses but they aren't calling your dd a boy's name.

Are you okay posting at 4.30am? or are you in another country?

pinkpinecone · 10/10/2020 08:11

Op, I'm intrigued, how do people pronounce it? It doesn't seem the kind of name people would get wrong as it's phonetic

pinkpinecone · 10/10/2020 08:13

Just seen that you've explained further down, how odd people get it so wrong! It's not a tricky name at all in my opinion.

midsummabreak · 10/10/2020 08:17

Love Ariadne

Greenglassteacup · 10/10/2020 08:18

I can’t understand why these people you keep encountering would pronounce Ariadne as Adrian.

funnyoldonion · 10/10/2020 08:32

Such a pretty name, don't change it

Sjl479 · 10/10/2020 08:34

Beautiful name, not difficult to pronounce, can’t imagine anyone would take offence at the use of a Greek goddess’s name??
