Is this the name of a boy or a girl?

You hear someone is going to give their baby the name Lyric.

Is your instant reaction that it’s a boys name or a girls name?

Boy I think

AriettyHomily · 05/10/2020 17:14

Boy. I'm quite surprised I quite like it.

AndNowItsHappeningInMine · 05/10/2020 17:17

My first thought is 'that's not a name', my second thought was 'actually, it is, it's the name of a theatre'.
Poor kid will be ridiculed.

It’s not me, I just think I’ve really put my foot in it.

I bumped into an old colleague today who I haven’t seen for many years and she was pushing a pram with a very young baby in it.

I asked her what the baby’s name was and she said “Lyric”. I obviously smiled and said it was a really pretty name for her, it isn’t a name I’d heard before, and then asked if it was a family name that had been passed down to her.

My colleague looked very put out, almost a little upset, and said the baby was a boy, not a girl, and it was just a name she and her partner had liked.

I was absolutely mortified and after an apology and a few minutes of chit-chat I made a quick getaway.

I genuinely just assumed that with the name Lyric the baby would be a girl.

I told my husband about it when he came home and he said he’d have thought the same.

I was just curious as to what others thought really.

I would have thought girl too.

EmilySpinach · 05/10/2020 17:32

Don’t feel too bad, OP. I would probably have made the same assumption. This is probably not the first occasion and she is realising that she might have saddled her kid with a bit of a problem.

Perro · 05/10/2020 17:32

I’d have guessed boy.
Your colleague is likely to get much worse comments than yours though when she tells people his name, it’s awful imo.

Ashdownstar · 05/10/2020 17:34

I would assume the parents wanted a 'gender neutral' name and thus not enquire as to the sex of the child probably.

Slightlybrwnbanana · 05/10/2020 17:37

You thought the name "Lyric" was likely to be a family name passed down? 😂
Perhaps the baby was conceived in the Lyric Theatre? I can picture Lyric and Melody, boy/girl twins.

Figgygal · 05/10/2020 17:37

Well that mother needs to get a bit more sick skinned if she gets offended by the fact that people think her child is a girl based on the ridiculous name that they’ve given it.

As for saying it was a name that they liked it’s a word not a name much like kettle or lamp

Poor kid

Emmmie · 05/10/2020 17:40

It made me think of Michigan Lyricism - a baby name suggestion from a previous thread

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 05/10/2020 17:41

Never assume. Just say non committal things like "what a sweetheart" until the parent says he or she.

😂😂😂 at thinking the name had been passed down from Great Grandma Lyric though.

Don't feel too bad Flowers

QueenofmyPrinces · 05/10/2020 17:41

You thought the name "Lyric" was likely to be a family name passed down? 😂

I didn’t, but it was all I could think of to say due to me being stunned by the name choice. It was the only polite response I could muster at the time Grin

Unisex and i dislike unisex names

Dillo10 · 05/10/2020 17:44

My first thought would be "Really?"

BikeRunSki · 05/10/2020 17:45

I’d think girl, like Melody and Harmony

DappledThings · 05/10/2020 17:47

I don't think I'd have assumed boy or girl. I would just have been mystified!

bearlyactive · 05/10/2020 17:50

I'd have said boy

Pieceofpurplesky · 05/10/2020 18:45

I wouldn't have said anything but used 'they' as I would not have a clue other than to feel sorry for the poor kid with its pretentious parents

SageRosemary · 05/10/2020 18:48

My instant reaction is not a boy, not a girl, maybe a cat, sorry!

SoupDragon · 05/10/2020 18:50

I would probably have thought girl (after thinking "what did she say? Was that Lyric?")

I think your colleague is going to need to get used to mistakes.

daisypond · 05/10/2020 18:50

Girl

Vanannabananna · 05/10/2020 18:52

I know a female lyric.

jessstan1 · 05/10/2020 18:53

Girl.
Silly name though. If you want something musical for a girl, why not 'Lorelei'?

TH22 · 05/10/2020 19:02

@chrislilleyswig

Neither of these would be my instant reaction. But to answer your question I would say it was a girl's name
Same!
