Expecting a baby boy this year. I'm English, husband is Greek.

Baby will have massive double barrel Greek-English name.

DP is keen on Jason (Ιάσων), to him it's just a good Greek name that translates well to English (we live in England)

To me, Jason is a 45 year old mechanic who has a wife 3 kids and goes to the same hotel in Majorca every year.

I'm a twat, aren't I? How do I get this out of my head, it's a perfectly fine name, isn't it?

It’s my husbands name (Irish and 26yo).
I’m not a huge fan of the name but that’s because his mother had no imagination and named him after his Dad. HmmHe does get Jase by my family and J by a lot of people! (Again I don’t like the short versions so I do use his full name and it’s a bit harsher with an English accent).

It’s a bit boring and dated (according to him!) Grin but he swears we pronounce it differently in England compared to Ireland!

Go with whatever makes you happy!

I actually like the name Jason. I know it's dated to the majority, but the Golden Fleece really turns it around for me. It doesn't really matter what a lot of people on Mumsnet think though; if you don't like it, then you should be able to veto and pick another name.

KurtansCurtains · 03/10/2020 18:56

I know a 16 yr old Jason. He's a little shit so I'd avoid purely on that point, but I also associate it with the 70's/80's. I don't think it's due a revival just yet.

midnightstar66 · 03/10/2020 18:59

Eww no, there are loads of good Greek boys names although I've never actually heard of Jason most Greek boys names end in S. as above I don't think it's due for a revival yet and there will be few Jason's under 40. How about Ιάκωβος (Jacob) Γιώργος (George) that are a bit more timeless but still classic

ButterflyRuns · 03/10/2020 19:03

Nope, you're right OP that's what most people would think of for Jason..

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 03/10/2020 19:08

I quite like it. Especially if it's easily translated between English and Greek.

I disagree with those saying it sounds quite dated and it's defo not a Gary type name.

PhoneAddict · 03/10/2020 19:55

Very mixed opinions! I think we're going to have to go back to the drawing board, I don't think I can make my peace with it!

To me it's a classical name, from Greek legends. I know people of all ages called Jason. Irish/ Welsh so may be different connotations of class.

eddiemairswife · 03/10/2020 20:17

You could go back to the Greek myths........ Heracles, Theseus, Perseus and so on.

user1493494961 · 03/10/2020 22:06

Go back to the drawing board, Jason is awful.

Antonin · 03/10/2020 22:31

How about Alexander?

Letsleepingdogslie8 · 03/10/2020 22:39

I just starting singing ‘Especially for You’. Sorry OP.

BeMorePacific · 03/10/2020 22:48

It isn’t too bad.
You could always shorten it to Jay? x

Kanaloa · 03/10/2020 22:56

I really like Jason. It seems strong and I think it would really suit a little boy, teenager or adult.

WiserOwl · 03/10/2020 23:01

I like it.

Firebird83 · 03/10/2020 23:06

I quite like it! Nicer than Jenson, Jadon or Jaxon anyway!

Backofthenewt · 04/10/2020 04:06

I usually hate names that are dated (I have a naff 80s pop star name) but actually I think Jason is absolutely fine, and may make a comeback. It's nowhere near Gary or Colin. And Momoa definitely helps matters.

katy1213 · 04/10/2020 04:34

And before he became that mechanic, Jason was scourge of every teacher and had a mum who used to yell, "Jye-son, come in fer yer tea!"
Just tell your husband that Jason doesn't work for cultural reasons too complex to explain.

katy1213 · 04/10/2020 04:36

Are Jenson, Jadon and Jaxon really names?

sashh · 04/10/2020 05:25

Wasn't Jason a serial killer in a film series?

Have a Friday the 13th fest.

There are lots of Greek or Greek inspired names, Jonas, Christopher, Alexander...

theamplifier · 04/10/2020 05:31

I think Jason is fine! It's a good classic name that happened to have a surge in the 80s.

WiserOwl · 04/10/2020 08:29

I have suggested Jason on this board to people who are considering Mason Confused

I can't understand why somebody would choose Mason over Jason.

Agree that it has something of the Jackson, Jaxon, Jaydon about it but it will not date badly like those names. None of those names terrible, all too normal now to be ''terrible''. Hope this makes sense.

Suzi888 · 04/10/2020 08:34

Jason - solid name.

Mason - reminds me of mason verger in Hannibal, shortened it sounds like ‘mace’ or M... awful imo

Coffeecak3 · 04/10/2020 08:42

Not keen on Jason.
My friend's Greek dh is called Akis and their ds Angelus, which means messenger.

diddl · 04/10/2020 08:43

I don't hate it, it has always seemed more modern than timeless unlike say Alexander.

It doesn't have any particular associations for more, but would prefer something else.

It would probably be Leander or Nestor for me!
