Hey!

What's people's honest opinions on the name River for a boy?!

Is it too popular/ normal these days?

OP posts:

I do t like it.

bluebluezoo · 19/09/2020 17:11

do you interview River or William, which sounds more serious to your clients?

You interview whoever is best qualified for the job Hmm.

I like River.

ChelseaCat · 19/09/2020 17:11

Awful

Benjispruce2 · 19/09/2020 17:11

Don’t

micc · 19/09/2020 17:12

God some people are so boring Haha ignore the nasty comments. River is so lovely, I personally prefer it on a girl but it could definitely go either way. I dont see it as too out there at all! It sounds nice and different without being really out there. Anyone who judges a person on their name (something they had 0 control over) has no hope in this world Haha.

Micah · 19/09/2020 17:16

The type of company that choose to interview based on name rather than suitability for the job probably don’t interview Jane or Mohammed either.

ie. not a company I’d want to work for. Full of boring white males named Dave 😂

Ah, but if people didn’t judge names, why does it matter? Why does this board exist? Why is it so heavily used? OP has openly judged the name William so why wouldn’t others openly judge the name River? I actually don’t think people get judged by their names, they get judged by their personalities. I do fear the generation being born now won’t have that luxury because names are so “out there”.

@GlacindaTheTroll

Tardis

Yes, Whovians will think of River Song and see it as a girls name. And there are an awful lot of Whovians

And the more discerning of them will also love Firefly.Grin

But, River Phoenix predated these fictional females.

I'm nearly 60 and don't like trendy or try-hard names ... but I think River is absolutely fine, for either sex. Unremarkable even.

Quizeerascal · 19/09/2020 17:21

I actually quite like it and I don't usually like 'out there' names. As others have said its easy to spell/pronounce and it doesn't have any negative connotations. It may depend a little on where you live but I work with children in London and see a wide mix of names so I don't think a River would stand out particularly around here. If you like it I think go for it but perhaps give a more common nickname just in case he finds that easier when he's older

RepDom21 · 19/09/2020 17:21

I quite like it. But I think you would have to see the baby first to see if the name suited them.

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 19/09/2020 17:22

It's not a name it's a geographical feature.

I would never judge the person. But I'd judge their parents ......

Flynn2019 · 19/09/2020 17:24

@SueEllenMishke

Yes we will definately have to agree to disagree!!

This was my point to OP though, it shouldn't matter what others think. I personally wouldn't pick a traditional name for my little one either. They r so boring and I feel like the world has moved since those names first come about. I think it's awful that anyone should be judged on their name, even though I am aware that it happens but remember that traditional names are judged also and I would assume the parents of those children are 'blah', themselves

Oh the irony ....😂

@Thisismytimetoshine

"No, can you imagine their cv landing on hrs desk for a grad scheme, there's 500 applications and they only have 10 places, so say 30 interview slots, do you interview River or William, which sounds more serious to your clients? River if you must as a middle name but give them a proper name for work purposes"

Have I? this is what my comment was aimed at

WillowintheUK · 19/09/2020 17:26

River Wilde in Val McDermid’s books is a female character, and prior to that the only River I’d heard of was River Phoenix. So I suppose it can be used for either sex. Not a name I’m keen on but I’ve nothing against it if it’s what someone else wants.

It wouldn't be their ability to do the job that would be judged.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 19/09/2020 17:30

River is memorable and unusual while still being enough of an established name to not sound too out there. I'd go for it - it's much nicer than William.

BikeRunSki · 19/09/2020 17:31

I like it, but might by more inclined to use the name of an actual river.

Nighttimefreedom · 19/09/2020 17:34

I love all nature names so I say yes!

ErrolTheDragon · 19/09/2020 17:40

So what would be being judged, and why?

My DH used to work for a company which seemed to have a 70% Dave hiring quota. Huge, blue chip... it doesn't exist now.

Marcipex · 19/09/2020 17:44

Fabulous

It's not exactly on a par with OxbowLake or my rugged NN.Grin
yikesanotherbooboo · 19/09/2020 17:46

It's not to my taste but as a nature name , it is easy to spell and pronounce and is gender equal if those are your criteria.I agree that when this generation of children with their multitude of different names grow up having a more unusual name won't mark them out in the way it has done in the past. Wider access to further education will hopefully mean that background and class aren't judged in the same way either. So I wouldn't worry too much about high court judge stuff. It is really important , imo, when naming a child to put them centre stage and not to be carried away by 'falling in love' with names or whimsy. Having said that I think River is ok .

Yawningyawning · 19/09/2020 17:47

Just know one girl River.
