Hey!

What's people's honest opinions on the name River for a boy?!

Is it too popular/ normal these days?

@FluffyEggsontoast this is a lovely comment and I think you're spot on! You can't not interview or give someone the job JUST because of their name, there would be uproar! And whether people like it or not, there WILL be people working in a few decades time called all sorts! Not just the Williams, Arthur's, Oliver's and Alexander's of the world. (Just tried to think of somewhat 'normal' names or names in the top 10) x

I agree that people do judge on names however, I think in this day in age all names can be looked at in a negative light. The names in the top 10 for both genders are no goes for me as to me that is people just going along with the norm and not necessarily because they r nice names. I would say if u like, go for it and don't care what anyone thinks. U will probably not like names that others like and that is just how the world works x

Why do people always throw in the "in 20 years time it won't be so unusual" crap?

@Flynn2019 I wouldn't go for names in the top 10 either... they're just not my cup of tea. You make great points :)

I agree with PP who said people make judgements about people based on their name so just bear that in mind.

Also, rightly or wrongly, people seem to expect traditional names even more in boys than girls.

I love it. But I also love Phoenix, Valentine, Romeo, Leonardo, Gabriel, Luke.

Of all the trendy, modern names River is one of the nicest.

It's much, much nicer than the cutesy Archie, Alfie, Teddy, Charlie type of names that are so popular at the moment.

Can you expand on this? Because at face value it makes zero sense.

I'm not really a "modern name" fan but I quite like River for a boy, as I just think of River Phoenix in Stand By Me. I know one, he must be about 12 by now.

I also know a baby girl River who was born last year- I like it less for a girl but it's certainly not out there or "try hard" to me, whatever that means!

I quite like it. Although it also feels a bit try hard too 🤔 dilemma.

Not everyone has a boring office job with a boring office name 🙄🙄🙄 if you love it OP, go for it

It's not a name.
While I wouldn't hold it against the person I'd be eye rolling at the parents.
I'd feel sorry for the person being subject to their parents need to overtly state how individual and cool they are....

When naming a human being you should not just think about what sounds cool and cute on a child but think of a name that will carry them through all their life stages. 5 year old river .... cute
50 year old account .....not so cute. Just massively cringeworthy

Yes it's sweet I know a girl River but think it's pretty unisex.

Lots of nature names are popular at the moment.

I have to disagree with you on that. I think River is a name that could carry a person through their entire life. Just remember in 50 years traditional names will more than likely stick out. Times have changed and I think modern names r much more interesting than using something boring that's been around for years on end.

I like it. DH works with one who has a professional high paid job, didn't hold him back

I know 3 Rivers under 3, 2 boys, 1 girl. I thought it was fairly unusual before then, has it had a surge of popularity due to a tv character or something?

It’s ok. Not my taste but I don’t agree with the “River will never be a high court judge” like comments. That’s not the world that we live in anymore.

No, can you imagine their cv landing on hrs desk for a grad scheme, there's 500 applications and they only have 10 places, so say 30 interview slots, do you interview River or William, which sounds more serious to your clients? River if you must as a middle name but give them a proper name for work purposes

I'm not saying someone can't do a job because of their name. Of course that would be ridiculous. However, why give someone a name that will be judged/commented upon/ cause mild embarrassment/commented upon?

I've worked with dozens of people with 'out there' names and not many of them thank their parents for it.

Never met a River, I suspect that is what you want to hear. Boy nature names I have met include an Oakley, Rowan and Bryn (hill in Welsh).
