Really like the name Jaya for our little girl. Would be pronounced "jay-a".

Thoughts?

Not for me

user1493494961 · 11/09/2020 14:40

Awful.

SpearmintPeppermint · 11/09/2020 14:41

I don’t quite understand your pronunciation - do you mean it would rhyme with hay-a or hiya?

I went to school with a Jaya that rhymed with hiya and thought it was a lovely name.

Rhyming with hay-a seems odd.

cosmo30 · 11/09/2020 14:41

It's different! But kinda reminds me of maya jama 🤔

MikeUniformMike · 11/09/2020 14:41

No.

AlexaShutUp · 11/09/2020 14:43

Do you have Indian heritage? I'm assuming not, given the proposed pronunciation.

I like it when it's pronounced to rhyme with hiya, but personally, I would avoid if it isn't your heritage.

user58 · 11/09/2020 14:48

@SpearmintPeppermint it would be to rhyme with hay-a... why does it seem odd?

Thanks for the feedback anyway, seems like no one likes it so far which is disappointing... but I'd love to hear more opinions.

I find your Jay-a pronunciation a slight mouthful. It's not dreadful, but there are plenty of nicer choices.

What style of names do you like?

AnnaSW1 · 11/09/2020 15:13

I don't like it, butif you love it you should use it

NotGenerationAlpha · 11/09/2020 15:16

It's an Indian name isn't it? I know a Jaya but they are Indians.

sorryforswearing · 11/09/2020 15:48

I don’t like it I’m afraid.

KitKatKit · 11/09/2020 15:50

It's an Indian name. Very popular.

@user1493494961 Let us know what your actual name is so we can tell you awful it is.

Thisismytimetoshine · 11/09/2020 15:52

It is absolutely dreadful!! Why would you? 😂

GoatsInBoats · 11/09/2020 15:54

I think I'd automatically pronounce it to rhyme with hiya.

Thisismytimetoshine · 11/09/2020 15:54

It's a classic case of seeing something written down and not even checking the pronunciation before deciding it would be a perfect name for your child. Honestly! Work a little harder.

022828MAN · 11/09/2020 15:58

I know a Jaya (rhymes with hiya) who's Indian. I like that name. Don't like your pronunciation.

AbbieFB · 11/09/2020 16:00

I would not think to pronounce it Jay-a and don’t think it sounds very nice when you do. Sorry!

aprilshowers2015 · 11/09/2020 16:01

I read it rhyming with "hiya" so I think they would have that confusion a lot.
I know a Jayla, I didn't love the name at first but it's grown on me as the little girl is a delight!

Rosecottage888 · 11/09/2020 16:07

I work with a Jaya, she's lovely 😊

anxiousanna75 · 11/09/2020 18:01

I love it. Jay-a is really pretty.

LunaLoveFood · 11/09/2020 18:08

Really like it, the one I know is very cute.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 11/09/2020 18:16

It’s an Indian name which is usually pronounced to rhyme with hiya, so you may find that your DD frequently has to correct people to get your preferred pronunciation.

WilsonandNoodles · 11/09/2020 21:55

I know a Jaya, pronounced Jay- a. She's a lovely, beautiful woman who suits her name.

foxtiger · 11/09/2020 23:02

I've only ever heard it pronounced like hiya too. I think it would get mispronounced all the time, especially if there's much of a Hindu community in your area and people are familiar with the traditional pronunciation.

Bobblehatwobble · 11/09/2020 23:49

@user58 I’m going against the grain here but I love that name. I’m a teacher and taught the most wonderful little girl (who was not of Indian heritage I may add) names Jeya. She was an absolute delight and I’ve loved the name ever since.
