I'm looking for one syllable names (Thanks for everyones help on my last post!) and I've come across the name Saffron to be shortened to Saff.
I kinda (really) like it but my husband things its, to quote him "chavvy".
Does it sound daft? What would you think if you came across someone called Saffron?

I love it, it would be on my shortlist but we sadly already know one. I like the nickname Saffy, but know you said you want a one syllable name.

Lebkuchenlovers · 09/09/2020 13:42

I was going to comment how lovely Saffron was.

But Saff? Really awful imo. Is Saffron really too long or difficult to pronounce?

greenteafiend · 09/09/2020 13:49

I really like it, but why would you choose it if you are set on a one-syllable name? NNs have a life of their own, so she may end up preferring Saffron or Saffie, or other people may just end up calling her one of those because it suits her better.

Sexnotgender · 09/09/2020 13:50

Saffron is lovely, I used to work with one.

Saff is horrible.

TheChristmasPrincess · 09/09/2020 14:07

Saffron and Saffy are lovely (although it does give me Ab Fab vibes, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing as she’s the sensible one!)

Saff is just...strange.

Debradoyourecall · 09/09/2020 14:38

I used to work with a Saf (short for something else) and it didn’t seem strange, she was just Saf and we all accepted it as her name.

TomBradysLeftKneecap · 09/09/2020 14:56

The only Saffron, Saff for short, I know is impossibly posh and really lovely.

janetmendoza · 09/09/2020 14:58

Saffron is lovely. Saff sounds like a nn for sapphire which I don't like at all.

overwork · 09/09/2020 15:03

Ron?! (Saffron is lovely)

user1493494961 · 09/09/2020 15:09

I agree with your DH, what about Tess.

MikeUniformMike · 09/09/2020 15:36

Not keen on Saffron, and it will be Saff.
What do you like about it?

PP suggested Tess, which I think is lovely.

SalvatoreMaroni · 09/09/2020 15:37

I agree with your DH, sorry!

Lebkuchenlovers · 09/09/2020 17:51

Saffron is ok. I know a lovely one (who never shortens it).

But Saff Shock?

chunkyrun · 09/09/2020 17:52

I think saff is just fine

lowlandLucky · 09/09/2020 19:31

Dee is short and sweet

SeanCailleach · 09/09/2020 19:48

Saffron is middle class.
Sappho even more so.
Saffiya / Sophia etc is more widely used

I love all of them.

SummerSummerSummertime · 09/09/2020 19:54

OMG I LOVE Saffron!

Saf sounds a bit like "Saaaaf London" to my ear.

Saffy is fine though.

SummerSummerSummertime · 09/09/2020 19:54

Phron?

Thisismytimetoshine · 09/09/2020 19:56

Saff? Really?!

Topseyt · 09/09/2020 19:56

Ditch the one syllable idea. It won't work.

Saffron is nice. Not so keen on Staff. Saffy is nice enough and that is what it is more likely to get shortened to. Or maybe Sappho, though I think that is more of a diminutive of Sapphire.

Thisismytimetoshine · 09/09/2020 19:57

@SeanCailleach

Saffron is middle class. Sappho even more so. Saffiya / Sophia etc is more widely used

Saffron is middle class... Who on earth told you that? Very bizarre assertion to make.
LadyMonicaBaddingham · 09/09/2020 20:00

One syllable, I'd use Bea. Or Dot. Or Kate. But I'd certainly use the longer version of the name (Beatrice, Dorothy, Katherine) on the BC in case your child fancies having an adult name as, you know, an adult...

Standrewsschool · 09/09/2020 20:01

I really like it.

Surprised no-one has mentioned Saffron from Ab Fab.

Saffron
OneRingToRuleThemAll · 09/09/2020 20:04

DD is Saffron. I call her Saff or Saffron. Her friends call her Saffie. She won't allow me to call her Saffie because I'm her mum not her friend.

DrDetriment · 09/09/2020 20:29

Very Ab Fab.
Saf is uber chavy though.
