Slavic names?

Do you know any Slavic names that you think could work in the UK?
I can only think of Alexander and Roman. Recently saw people mentioning traditional Russian names here like Yaakov, really? Out LO is going to be dual heritage.

Can you be more specific than Slavic? In my experience, Polish names are different to Russian, which are different to Latvian, and Czech, etc.

MikeUniformMike · 07/09/2020 20:10

Depends on the surname. If the surname is slavic, I'd use a more international name or possibly something traditionally british.
If the surname is british use any name both parents like that isn't likely to cause spelling pronunciation issues in either language.

I like Leonid, but Leo is very popular.

Kittywampus · 07/09/2020 20:15

How about Adam?

Do you want girls names or just boys?

Viletta · 07/09/2020 22:10

@IsolaPribby Russian preferably

I know an Atanas and my friend is married to a "teo" which is basically Theo but obviously no "th". They are both Bulgarian.

I really like Alexander but with Sasha as a nickname.
Or how about Constantin?

TheVanguardSix · 07/09/2020 22:41

Oh... and my brother in law's name: Ilya (which is the Russian Elijah)
My other brother in law is Alexander but goes by the diminutive Sanya rather than Sasha.

EssentialHummus · 07/09/2020 22:45

Leo, Anton, Max, Samuil/Samuel, Boris Grin, Alexander, Mikhail.

TheVanguardSix · 07/09/2020 22:49

Oh and another name: We considered calling DS1 Kiril.
Russian Theodore is Feodor/Fyodor.
I also love Attila, which is more Hungarian/Turkish/Romanian.

Boris is a Slavic name too, but I'd avoid, particularly in the UK.

Ellmau · 08/09/2020 00:27

Alexander
Ivan
Leonid
Andrei
Sergei
Adam
Pasha
Dimitri
Boris - if you dare

baumwolle · 08/09/2020 00:29

Biblical names will have close equivalents in both languages, so maybe eg Pavel, Mark, David. Otherwise possibly Gregory, Eric, Robert or other names which are transliterated similarly between the two (even if the pronunciation wouldn't be quite identical).

Viletta · 08/09/2020 03:35

@Ellmau 😂 Boris is spoilt for years now

Boris was such a great name, wasn't it?! I loved that name! It's ruined for me now. Grin

CaffiSaliMali · 08/09/2020 11:02

I love the name Constantin. Alexander and Roman are both a good shout as names which will work well in both countries (and internationally, especially Alexander).

Roman is shooting up in popularity in the UK at the moment, which may or may not bother you.
