my husband likes Rupert

He thinks it's a really sweet name, but I'm not sure. We already have a Jasper and I'm worried Jasper and Rupert together sounds a bit posh! I like to think of Jasper as a bit more versatile and quirky. Does anyone have anything else that would work? What are your thoughts?

Other names DH likes but I've vetoed are

• Oscar (the cat! 😂)
• Felix (know about 3)

I quite like Atlas and Casper (I know, it's a 'no' with Jasper!) but that's it really.

I love Rupert, I don't think it's posh. Hugo also goes well, as do Theo, Angus, Hamish & Isaac and Elliott.

I like Rupert, it definitely goes well with Jasper.

Asking, naively, as a non-Brit, can you just let it go and choose the name that you like?

Short answer? No.

I'm afraid I can't abide the name Rupert. It just sounds like a name for a young Tory toff. Which is fine if you live in Surrey.

Rupert is a nickname that squaddies give to a certain type of officer. It isn't complimentary. And can you imagine if Rupert the Bear had a revival? Poor kid! It's one of those 'higher risk' names to give a baby.

Not keen though nothing wrong with it with Jasper- as PP said horse bolted on not sounding slightly posh when you chose Jasper for your other son- though don't think either are absurdly posh.

I really dislike Rupert I'm afraid. I always think of sulky posh boys, and automatically say "Wupert" in my head.

Jasper is a much cooler name (but yes, still pretty posh!) - I'd think to pair it with:

Ah, I see. I have met a few like that, not sure if any were actually called Rupert but can see it could be a generic name for them.

I think it's more the concern of being seen as trying to pass yourself off as posh when you aren't, and people thinking you're a bit of a dick.

Plus the chance that if you live in a not very posh area you might be marking your child as a target for bullies by giving them a name that doesn't fit in.

I don’t mind Rupert actually I know a couple.
One seems to be called Roopsy by his dm though which is pretty awful.

Ps I know both a Jasper and Rupert (different families) and neither are posh at all. But I know what you mean. I crossed Tristan off the list because it sounded like a rugby playing public school boy, which our son will definitely not be.

I think its pretty dire. Im not keen on any of the names mentioned so far. Otto is OK.

I think baby names are one of the most emphatic indicators of quite how class based our society still is. It's more complex now than lower/middle/upper but by god it's still there. Naming your baby Tarquin or Julius if you live on a council estate in a northern industrial town is against the rules, there will be consequences. Likewise, naming your child Kayden or Jaxxon when they're going to go to a private boarding prep and then on to Eton or Harrow is equally against the rules.

I like Rupert it would suit a baby, child and man.

I think it's fairly unlikely that my DC would end up dating or marrying someone posh, as IME it's pretty difficult to break into those kinds of social circles if you aren't born into them.
