my husband likes Rupert

He thinks it's a really sweet name, but I'm not sure. We already have a Jasper and I'm worried Jasper and Rupert together sounds a bit posh! I like to think of Jasper as a bit more versatile and quirky. Does anyone have anything else that would work? What are your thoughts?

Other names DH likes but I've vetoed are

• Oscar (the cat! 😂)
• Felix (know about 3)

I quite like Atlas and Casper (I know, it's a 'no' with Jasper!) but that's it really.

I quite like Jasper but Rupert is so Jillly Cooper its just dreadful.

Rupert is fine as long as your lifestyle fits the name.

I really like Rupert, it's down as a possibility if we ever have another, I don't think it's posh, but it's not 'common' either, but I really don't think jasper is posh either.

Jasper sounds unreliable and sleazy, Rupert posh and wet. Felix is a cat's name.

Oscar, no, only suitable for cats.

Out of these suggestions I like Gregory, Alistair, Tobias, Michael, and Gabriel.
I suggest the best thing would ideally be to rename Jasper Michael and name the new baby Gabriel

i like Rupert. I have a friend who is one, although mostly called Roo

Rupert is a nickname that squaddies give to a certain type of officer. It isn't complimentary. And can you imagine if Rupert the Bear had a revival? Poor kid! It's one of those 'higher risk' names to give a baby.

I love Rupert and love it as Jasper's brother. However I'm not British and don't get this 'too posh' idea. Asking, naively, as a non-Brit, can you just let it go and choose the name that you like?
I also love Oscar and Felix and think they all work with Jasper. Rupert and Felix are better than Oscar though as they don't repeat the ending. Not so keen on Atlas. Aldous?

I have a Jasper too! I would have loved to have named one of my boys Rupert but it doesnt really go with our surname. When we were talking about potential names and mentioned Rupert as a possibility, my dad and brother-in-law snickered and said it was too posh for our social status. I laughed at them and said they were old fashioned to think that. I think these days, names aren't as rooted in your socio-economic status, just as names are no longer restricted to your home country (Francesca is Italian, Emma is German, Jasper is Persian etc)

Just go with what you and your partner love! At worst people will make fun of him for having a posh name, even though he isn't posh. It's not the worst thing in the world and they will soon realise he isn't posh when he opens his mouth.

If you don't like Rupert, then don't name him it. Its your baby!

I think Rupert is becoming a bit more frequently used so I wouldn't assume posh. I know two that definitely aren't. One goes by Ru which I like.

It goes perfectly with Jasper.

Felix is more popular but not massively so. I think you want to avoid repeating sounds so agree Oscar out with Jasper.

Until I started coming in mumsnet I’d never realised names had such class connotations. For those who say the a is ‘posh’, what are the consequences of giving a child a posh name? Isn’t it a bit old fashioned to assign names to socio-economic groups? Is it acceptable to describe a name as ‘common’?

My uncle spent his childhood getting the shit kicked out of home for having a "posh boy" name on a very unposh estate. Hopefully things have moved on a bit, but I'd still consider the socio-economic area I was raising my kids in before naming them.

So no I don’t think of Eton and didn’t when we chose the name
