Ivy - strong name or not?

HumbleCrumble · 01/09/2020 11:40

I’m not usually a fan of girls names ending in the -ie sound, they usually fall in the girly/twee category for me (nothing wrong with that, just not my taste).

However I’ve loved the name Ivy for years. I think it’s feminine but still quite strong sounding, something about the I and V sounds together is kind of punchy. I feel like it’s a name that can be cute on a little girl but not too cutesy when she's older, if that makes sense?

Pregnancy hormones are making me doubt everything, so would appreciate other people’s opinions. What type of name do you think it is?

(I’m aware some people see it as an “old lady” name, that isn’t an association I have but that’s probably because I’ve never known any older Ivys personally.)

Absolutely beautiful name. One of my favourites and I wouldn't class it with many of the "eee" names

GoatsInBoats · 01/09/2020 11:53

Strong yes, in that it's not twee and cutesy.

To me it does feel very much part of the old lady name fashion (Florence, Mabel, Olive, Violet, Betsy etc), so I would think you'd followed that trend. If that doesn't bother you though, crack on, it's a name that will serve your DD well no matter what her age.

TweeBree · 01/09/2020 11:58

It's grown on me over the years, but it seems to be very trendy. I know at least three under the age of 10.

KipperBangs · 01/09/2020 12:01

Lol at ' it's grown on me'

I'm not keen. It just makes me think of a dark, dank creeping poisonous plant

Oneandabean · 01/09/2020 12:03

I don’t associate it with the old lady names at all. I love it and was on our list but it’s so popular now we were put off

HumbleCrumble · 01/09/2020 12:12

Thanks all.

The popularity doesn't bother me too much, I'm in Scotland where it seems to be slightly less common (top 50 rather than to 20).

Poison Ivy. Nasty dark creeper that gets everywhere and causes rashes. Old ladies. I honestly can't think of many worse names.

However most names will be disliked by someone - so I always think that if you're set on something you should just keep it to yourself and just use it. You did ask for opinions tho' Smile

Orphlids · 01/09/2020 12:48

I like your description of it as ‘punchy’. You’re right. I think it is a strong name. I don’t think of it as an old lady’s name. As an avid Beano reader as a child, my initial thought is always Ivy the Terrible, but that’s not a negative. Ivy is a plant which provides a habitat for an absolute abundance of wildlife, and therefore it’s a plant that I will always love. We have a little wren building his nest in our ivy every year.

HumbleCrumble · 01/09/2020 13:58

I have issue with people saying they don't like it Lucking, I know no name is universally popular Smile

I was more interested to see how people feel on the twee/strong scale and at least some people agree with me which has made me feel better!

Gah, I have no issue with people saying they don't like it!

I was also a Beano reader Orphlids but had forgotten about Ivy the Terrible, I quite like that association Grin

I'm really sorry but I am not a fan. It cost me so much money to get my roof sorted from ivy that all my connotations are negative and I just think of a horrible weed

Mutabilis · 01/09/2020 14:28

I love it, but then I know a strong willed, tenacious Ivy who lives up to her name.

BeMorePacific · 01/09/2020 15:25

I’m in Scotland too and love the name Ivy! I have a 4 year old, and haven’t met any Ivy’s xx

ohthegoodtimes · 01/09/2020 15:34

I have an Ivy, mine is 9. It was very much an out there name back then and a lot of people were shocked when we called her that. There are a lot more cutesy names in her class. I would say though I know 3 Facebook friends who have now got Ivys all newborn or under 2 and think it's getting quite popular with babies. Also I'm in Scotland. I really loved the name Iris and sometimes wished I had went for that instead.

DramaAlpaca · 01/09/2020 17:48

I see it as a strong, vintage name. It's not cutesy in the least.

MikeUniformMike · 01/09/2020 19:21

Ivy Tilsley
Poison Ivy
Clingy weed.
Similar to Evie, Eva, Ava, Isla ...

CharlieBoo · 01/09/2020 22:03

It always makes me think of Ivy Tilsley! It’s ok, not awful but not pretty

Tillygetsit · 01/09/2020 23:00

A friend of my dd1 is Ivy. She's a tiny elfin little girl with a huge personality. It really suits her. A lovely strong nature name I think.

Thisismytimetoshine · 01/09/2020 23:04

I love it.

Flymetothestars · 01/09/2020 23:06

Love it . Not twee at all

LouiseTrees · 01/09/2020 23:15

Ivy is a name used by a fair few people with December babies (the holly and the ivy) or those who have undertaken IVF ( often with a middle name like Florence). I like the name. Also in Scotland

That sounds extremely unlikely Confused. About the IVF, I mean!
wishing3 · 01/09/2020 23:34

Cool, non cutesy, strong.

Smallsteps88 · 01/09/2020 23:35

It doesn’t feel like a strong name to me. Very flowery and twee. Sorry.
