Ivy - strong name or not?

I’m not usually a fan of girls names ending in the -ie sound, they usually fall in the girly/twee category for me (nothing wrong with that, just not my taste).

However I’ve loved the name Ivy for years. I think it’s feminine but still quite strong sounding, something about the I and V sounds together is kind of punchy. I feel like it’s a name that can be cute on a little girl but not too cutesy when she's older, if that makes sense?

Pregnancy hormones are making me doubt everything, so would appreciate other people’s opinions. What type of name do you think it is?

(I’m aware some people see it as an “old lady” name, that isn’t an association I have but that’s probably because I’ve never known any older Ivys personally.)

Sorry but I always think of poison ivy.
The plant is a very unpleasant one that cause immense damage to fences and buildings and is the devil to eliminate. The tiniest twig/leaf is capable to shooting roots. In addition the rather insignificant flowers attract wasps and the pollen gives me severe hay fever. Must have spent thousands over the years trying to eradicate it from my gardens — a vile weed.

nothing ending in “y” Or “ie” sounds strong - daisy, kitty, Katie etc, but it is a nice name and I reckon still unusual.

Brighterthansunflowers · 02/09/2020 14:03

I don’t love it but I don’t dislike it either. I think it’s cutesy rather than strong, and it blurs into all the other old lady names for me tbh

TheHappyHerbivore · 02/09/2020 16:01

I do like it and it’s absolutely having a moment - I know 4 baby Ivys born in the last 5 years. So I don’t think it has an ‘old lady’ association, or if it does it won’t for much longer!

Roselilly36 · 02/09/2020 16:25

I love it, gorgeous name.

zingally · 04/09/2020 09:20

I have a 3 year old Ivy-Claire, and I love her name!

Scubalubs87 · 04/09/2020 09:28

I wanted Ivy or Iris but my husband vetoed both. Was gutted.

FizzyGreenWater · 04/09/2020 18:03

Bit depressing somehow

loopylindazdaughter · 04/09/2020 18:08

Beautiful

BabyLlamaZen · 05/09/2020 14:29

I love it and I think it stands out from the old lady trend. I think of winter and Christmas baby.

HanPanPeg · 05/09/2020 14:37

I love it - I don’t think it’s cutesy and is not as trendy as Mila, Ava etc

Unseeliequeen · 05/09/2020 14:43

I like it buttt I also think of Intravenous Therapy.

user1477391263 · 05/09/2020 15:41

It's sweet but I wouldn't say it's strong sounding at all. It's a plant that clings to another plant, basically!

zigaziga · 05/09/2020 16:23

I don’t think it’s twee. There are plenty of “ee” names that aren’t twee - Emily, Sophie, Phoebe etc and Ivy would be one.

zigaziga · 05/09/2020 16:24

Also Hmm that people who have conceived via IVF often have names like Ivy Florence.

xoxogossipgirl2020 · 05/09/2020 16:35

I have an ivy. Am always getting compliments on her name.

lljkk · 05/09/2020 16:53

I don't like it. It seems obviously not pretty, not strong to me. I don't like ivy plants either, mind. Feel free to ignore, of course.

ellenpartridge · 05/09/2020 16:59

I like it and don't find it twee

Didiusfalco · 05/09/2020 17:03

It was my grandmas name. She was born in a Salvation Army hospital for single mothers in London called ‘Ivy House’. She was one heck of a determined woman. Obviously it is an awesome name Smile

SpringSunshineandTulips · 05/09/2020 17:05

I like it. But then I love the name Maisie which is probably one of your ‘twee’ names.

rubydoobydoo · 05/09/2020 17:17

Love it - my grandma was Ivy and I always fancied using it if I had a girl before it became more popular.

I didn't have children but now I have a cat called Ivy!

ImaSababa · 05/09/2020 18:33

Sinister!

HumbleCrumble · 05/09/2020 23:11

Thanks all for replying, seems opinions are pretty evenly mixed which is good enough for me Smile

DD is Ivy, we chose it because it couldn't be shortened and it wasn't too cutesy so thought it would suit a baby-toddler-as she grows older. Thought it was quite a punchy strong independent kinda vibe. Was relatively uncommon 3 years ago but is growing in popularity, wouldn't put me off though we still love it
