WDYT of this name for a girl?

We have been loving the middle name Summer but have seen it rise in popularity or at least it seems it has in the area we are in. Is it usable or is it too linked to the place?

First name runner ups for now are Blair, Carlota, Imogen and Harriet.

I like it!

Blaire is lovely from your list. Again, Blaire Somerset wouldn't be what I'd call my usual style but it really works.

I like Carly but Carlotta is a bit much. Imogen ok. Harriet I just don't like the sound of it at all.

Muser314 · 24/08/2020 21:11

Disclaimer, I'm Irish and I've never been to Somerset. So not getting any associations there. Hang on, maybe......cricket?

mylittleavalon · 24/08/2020 21:12

Not keen on Somerset as just think of the place and not keen on that myself. But really like Carlotta and Harriet from your list- esp Carlotta as you don't hear many of them and can be Carly or Lottie

DramaAlpaca · 24/08/2020 21:13

Somerset is rarely used as a first name, but when it is it's usually for a boy.

I don't think it's useable for a girl.

FelicityPike · 24/08/2020 21:15

It’s not a name.

DemolitionBarbie · 24/08/2020 21:17

It's a county. Would you call a child Buckinghamshire?!

AdvicePleaseThankyou · 24/08/2020 21:19

A boy at dds school is called Somerset.
Not for me but I can see why people like it!

HappyDinosaur · 24/08/2020 21:19

I'm not keen at all. Carlotta (with 2 t's) is lovely though. Harriet is also nice, but becoming quite popular around here.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 24/08/2020 21:33

If it were an actual Country or a Continent I’d say yes as it has a nice sound to it.
How about Sunset it’s no more out there than Somerset and seems to be the type of vibe you’re looking for plus anything goes now.

pinascoladas · 24/08/2020 21:34

We actually don't know any young Harriets, I do see it mentioned around a lot but I haven't met any lately. I should check statistics for our area though.

We probably would stick to the Carlota spelling as it's a family name so we'd like to keep it with the original spelling and we are not too keen on the 2 t's.

I have never come across anyone names Somerset, I wish I did though. I find it such a sweet alternative to Summer. If there's girls names Devon even if it's a county surely Somerset could work.

I really like Harriet, and I quite like Imogen. Blair and Carlotta are not my personal style, but sure.

Somerset, on the other hand, is absolutely ridiculous. If you want to call her Summer, call her Summer.

Ponks · 24/08/2020 21:44

To me it's more of a male name due to Somerset Maugham but then I've seen Devon used for both boys and girls (in the USA).
Here you might get jokes about being a yokel / country bumpkin.

whatausername · 25/08/2020 00:47

Too linked to the place. No point in using a a word (and tbh the 'set' makes it quite ugly) simply because the name you do like is also liked by other people.

HopeClearwater · 25/08/2020 01:01

Somerset Maugham’s given name was William, though.
Crazy to call anyone Somerset. She’ll never be able to move to Minehead, will she.

Steviestix · 25/08/2020 03:44

Somerset isn’t a nice name for a child at all!!!
People will say it in a West Country accent too! Awful! Google some baby names - you can do better!

Phillymouse · 25/08/2020 03:52

@pinascoladas I agree with @Steviestix if your child comes down to the West Country it will have to put up with people saying it in a farmers accent and being called Zummerset and being asked if their parents liked the wurzles and drank too much cider.........

Trust me I only live in Somerset and get this all the time from outsiders lol

VenusClapTrap · 25/08/2020 07:04

If you have some kind of link to Somerset - family from there, or you met on holiday there or something, then I can kind of see the point, but naming your kid that just because you like the sound of the word is a bit bonkers.

Harriet is a lovely name, and I rather like Carlota.

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 25/08/2020 07:07

I know one, an adult female. It gets shortened rather than used in full.

madcatladyforever · 25/08/2020 07:16

I was a bit Hmm

But there was the author Somerset Maugham, his first name was William.

It suited him.

GeorginaTheGiant · 25/08/2020 07:18

I almost let out an actual snort when I read this one. You can’t call the poor mite Somerset FFS! Grin

Aebj · 25/08/2020 07:25

I prefer Imogen , from your choices. Somerset is a county and like others said , it’ll be said with an accent , and asked al the time if she likes cider!!!

BlackberrySky · 25/08/2020 07:26

Perhaps you could use Somerset as her middle name? Carly Somerset? It's much more usual in my experience for people to have any significant place names as middle names. For example I know people who have middle names of Iona, Sheppey and Filey because those places carry family significance. It's a way of acknowledging this without saddling the child with constantly having to explain it.

CabernetSoWhat · 25/08/2020 07:39

Carlota and Harriet are lovely.

Blaire makes me think of Tony or the Witch Project.

I can't hear Somerset in anything other than a West Country accent.

FippertyGibbett · 25/08/2020 07:43

I think Somerset is just going to get shortened to Summer anyway.
Blair - witch and Tony/Cherie.
Carlota - ok but I prefer Carla.

Yearinyearout · 25/08/2020 07:51

Terrible, sorry. Somer is passable.
