Hi I need some inspiration!

7 weeks to go and no further forward with names 🙈.

Baby girls surname will be Kilpatrick and we both have one Irish parent so want an Irish first name but really struggling to find something that we love.

Any suggestions welcome!

I have a Cora x x

Saoirse - I wish id had the confidence. I'm not Irish but DHs family is so we have an Irish surname. We live in England and DH thought it was "too Irish". I think he meant people wouldn't know how to pronounce or spell it where we live, and he was right. I could have just gone for Sasha I suppose Hmm

ElleyBear13 · 23/08/2020 21:23

We have a Maeve 5 months - my friends little girl is Eibhlin which I think is beautiful.

PetCheetah · 23/08/2020 21:45

Another vote for Caoimhe (I pronounce it Kweeva and like that better than Keeva, I think it's a regional thing though). I also love Nuala.

SqidgeBum · 23/08/2020 21:47

I am Irish. I always wanted to call my kid Aoibheann (pronounced Aveen). I also love Caoimhe (Queeva) and Muireann. My English husband just couldnt stop saying he cant pronounce them and they have 'too many letters'.

BadEyeBri · 23/08/2020 21:50

Nuala, Dearbhala or Mairead

LandedInMyLap · 23/08/2020 21:55

I loved Saoirse and Caoimhe when I had my DD 12 years ago, but the pronunciation was an issue. Not so much how English people would pronounce it, but the fact that I only really like the way my family’s part of Ireland pronounce them - Sare-sha and Kee-va, not the more popular Seer-sha and Kwee-va.

Maeve, Niamh and Roisin are lovely, too.

Lasairfhíona is beautiful, but could be a tricky one to keep having to spell for people in the UK.

I also LOVE Liadan, but DH vetoed Sad.

AriettyHomily · 23/08/2020 22:28

Oonagh

StuntPond · 23/08/2020 22:33

DS would have been Sadhbh if he’d been a girl. Siún, Doireann and Clíodhna were also on the table.

HarrietM87 · 24/08/2020 20:20

@SqidgeBum Aoibheann is pronounced Eve-an (Eavan is the anglicised spelling). I have a friend called that who gets so annoyed at the constant mispronunciation so it is a common mistake. If you want A-veen it’s Aibhin or Eibhin I think.

I’m completely torn because my favourite Irish girls name is Ailbhe but I live in England and just know she will be Ail-bee on first attempt by most people. It’s not the same spelled Alva. Is it too cruel?!

DancingLady · 24/08/2020 20:32

Another vote for Eithne, lovely name.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 24/08/2020 20:34

Is it too cruel?!

Do it!

My sil is Ailbhe and her friend named her dd after her, but spelt it Alva. It’s just not the same!

People will get used to it, it’s not exactly a tongue twister.

Paris14eme · 24/08/2020 20:38

Tara

Brokenfurnitureandroses · 24/08/2020 20:54

Sinead, Muireann, Tara, Erin, Bláthnaid, Aedín, Roisín, Cara, Mairead, Áine, Alannah, Máire, Clodagh, Maeve(Maebh), Aoibheann (ayveen), Fionnuala, Cáit, Seoda (Jewel), Clár (Claire), Aoife, Niamh, Gráinne, Liadh, Bronagh, Seosaimhín (Josephine), Aobha, Aisling (dream), Realtín (little star).

HarrietM87 · 24/08/2020 21:21

Lol at all the other posters saying Aoibheann is Ayveen as well 🤦‍♀️. I guess if enough people do something it becomes acceptable?!

But you don’t pronounce Aoife “Ayva” or Caoimhe “Cayva” or Saoirse “Sayrsha” and the name Aoibh is Eve, so how on earth do you get Ayv at the start of Aoibheann??

Smallsteps88 · 24/08/2020 21:29

I like Naoife, Aine and Nulua

Naoife and Nulua aren’t Irish names.

It would be either Naoise or Aoife. And Nuala.

I always wanted to call my kid Aoibheann (pronounced Aveen)

Its pronounced like Even.

Nuala, Dearbhala or Mairead

Dearbhla

SqidgeBum · 24/08/2020 21:35

@Smallsteps88 I am actually Irish, like born, bred, raised, Irish speaker.

Its pronounced A (as is not ah) veen. I know many. I have taught many. Its a very common name. Its not pronounced 'even'.

Smallsteps88 · 24/08/2020 21:40

I am actually Irish, like born, bred, raised, Irish speaker.

As am I.

Its pronounced A (as is not ah) veen

That may be how the people you know pronounce it, but that is incorrect. As an Irish speaker you should understand why.

SqidgeBum · 24/08/2020 21:45

Ok well I will tell that to all the people I know in Ireland called Aoibheann who pronounce it wrong.

Smallsteps88 · 24/08/2020 21:54

Grin You don’t have to tell them they’re pronouncing their names wrong. But you also shouldn’t give incorrect pronunciations to people considering using the name.
