Boys names - thoughts please

We're having a baby boy in a few weeks time - our first baby 🥰.

Naming him is proving a challenge and he's just known as Kevin for now. I feel it would be kind to not stick with Kevin, so please give me your thoughts on our potential names.

Freddie (short for Alfred)
Percy (family name, I love it and think it's due a come back!)
Beau
Rowan
Jesse

A mixed bunch - we have very different tastes so getting just a few has been a struggle!

Thanks

Rory, or Jesse

Jj2431 · 24/08/2020 03:06

Freddie (short for Alfred)- Nice if short for Alfred as you say
Percy (family name, I love it and think it's due a come back!)- reminds me of pig, a stuck up podgy pig. Sorry.
Beau- No
Rowan- Quite nice
Jesse- Like
Rory- Like but not sure if too cutesy for grown man

octoberfarm · 24/08/2020 03:58

Love Jesse, and really like Rory too! Congrats!

Whatsyourflava · 24/08/2020 23:29

Congratulations @roarfeckingroarr on your little boy 💐

Freddie (short for Alfred) - have always loved this name. It's more popular than I'd like but doesn't put me off somehow.

Percy - adore it and would use it. I don't think Percy would raise any eyebrows these days to be honest, there's all sorts of names about now compared to when we were young.

Beau - nice name. Not one I've heard of much.

Rowan - I also find this quite feminine and whilst I used to see it as a different name to Roman, when there's appeared quite a few Rowan and Roman's about recently, the names do merge and that would annoy me if it were my name (take it from someone with a popular 80s name similar to another popular 80s name - along lines of Lauren and Laura).

Jesse - love everything about this name.

Rory - it's alright. Nothing I'd write home about but not awful.

roarfeckingroarr · 25/08/2020 11:55

Thanks everyone!

Leaning towards Freddie (Alfred) or Beau. I love Percy but DP less sold. I'm taking Rowan off the list following your feedback re Roman and I agree it's quite feminine.

Could you make Percy the middle name maybe? It's really lovely.

I think Freddie (Alfred) and Beau are both great options and maybe one will suit more than the other when he arrives. I don't know loads of Freddie's or anything but it's certainly a name you hear a lot more frequently than Beau, if that's a factor. That said Alfred on the BC does give quite a lot of different options for nicknames should he prefer Alf or whatever when older (I'm sure he'll love Freddie though)

Sausagedog1 · 25/08/2020 17:46

Love Jesse, Rory, Rowan and Beau.
Jesse and Rory are my faves. Beau is very cool but a potentially difficult name to live with.
Rowan is a good safe gentle name for a boy.
Don't like Freddy its too cutesy and Percy is cute for a baby but I'd hate to be called it if I was a teen or a man.

BGirlBouillabaisse · 26/08/2020 07:33

@roarfeckingroarr

DS1 gets a lot of compliments on Alfred nn Freddie. We decided on Alfred in case he wasn't keen on Freddie and wanted to use a different diminutive. Turns out he's always Fred/Freddie, and there's only one other Freddie at his village primary.

NoGinNotComingIn · 26/08/2020 07:48

Freddie is a bit chavvy, a lot of young mums seem to chose that name and it just spoils the name, I suppose it depends where you are from.

I'm not overly keen on any of the others I prefer traditional names though. I liked Albert nn bertie as someone else suggested though. I'm also pregnant at the moment although we have never found out the sex so always pick boys and girls names. Im adding Albert nn Bertie to my list. Arthur is our front runner boys name, probably Arthur William.

Deffo not beau, Rowan, or Jesse though. Percy is an 85 year old man or a pig.

BGirlBouillabaisse · 26/08/2020 07:57

@NoGinNotComingIn I suggested Albert nn Bertie because that's DS2's name (so I've got Alfred nn Fred and Albert nn Bertie). If Fred thinks his name is too chavvy, he can change it to Alf in later life Grin

celestebellman · 26/08/2020 07:59

I like Jesse best.
Rowan - quite like, but maybe prefer for a girl
Beau - dislike (especially when people use it for a girl!) It’s quite a lot to love up to.
Freddie/ Alfred - bit meh, lots about
Rory - ok, a bit cutesy and v popular
I mainly came on to say that I always thought of Percy as an awful, wet name too, but been reading Percy Jackson series with ds (8) and it actually works well for a modern day Greek hero in America - so I’ve revised my view. Also know of a baby Percy and heard of others so think it is getting more usable!

LittleNightin · 26/08/2020 09:10

Instantly think of Percy Pig.
I have a Freddie, dont have any regrets naming him that.
I like Rory too

Disfordarkchocolate · 26/08/2020 09:12

Percy is my favourite.

roarfeckingroarr · 26/08/2020 10:08

@NoGinNotComingIn @BGirlBouillabaisse I've never thought of Freddie as chavvy, perhaps because I knew a few growing up and at university - all private or public school types. Interesting take though. I like Albert / Bertie but I have an ex who is Bertie and that put me off.

@Disfordarkchocolate @celestebellman very much appreciating the Percy love GrinGrin

Angel2702 · 26/08/2020 10:12

I love Percy and agree it is being used a bit more.

Also like Alfred / Fred but not keen on Alfie / Freddie.

AdelaidePlace · 26/08/2020 10:18

Similar vain...Arthur (Art or Arty)

PlantPotting · 26/08/2020 10:25

Freddie is the opposite of chavvy round where I live @roarfeckingroarr

Beautiful name.

I still have a very soft spot for Percy though! Percy as a middle name would be a great idea if you're not comfortable with it being a first name. But really like Jesse and Beau too.

ifiwasascent · 26/08/2020 10:31

Love Percy!

Ginandplatonic · 26/08/2020 10:38

Love Alfred nn Freddie, and Rory, but I really really want you to use Percy! I love it but wouldn’t be brave enough. (May be slightly over-invested...)
Hate Jesse and Beau. Meh on Rowan (but love it for a girl) but I see you’ve taken it off the table.

NoGinNotComingIn · 26/08/2020 13:32

@roarfeckingroarr I wasn’t being mean just saying around where we are from it’s become a little chav-I-fied! I can well imagine a public school type called Freddie, I went to uni with quite a few private school people and yes it wouldn’t sound out of place back then. But I think like some other names they grow in popularity with certain groups and before you know it the name is ruined! I sort of regretted one of my children’s names because of this, it’s a traditional old name that is very popular now. I chose it as it’s a classic name (an elderly relative was called this) but again ruined!

roarfeckingroarr · 26/08/2020 18:18

Ok I think I'm leaning towards Alfred Percy surname, nn Freddie GrinGrin

Great choice @roarfeckingroarr - lovely name!

emilybrontescorsett · 26/08/2020 19:17

I'm not keen on any to be honest. At a push I would go with Beau or Jesse but they are both quite 'out there' names.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 26/08/2020 19:21

Why not call him Kevin. It’s a great name and makes a refreshing change from Oliver Noah or Harry

roarfeckingroarr · 26/08/2020 20:43

What about Kevin? Any better?
