Jesse.

Is it a marmite name? Any thoughts?

Jessie as short for Jessica, lovely. Jesse for a boy is just silly, sorry, just give him a normal boy's name.

wowfudge · 23/08/2020 20:53

I've always thought that the majority of biblical names are classic rather than dated.

Kote · 23/08/2020 21:15

I've never heard of the insult (I'm 27). Love the name.

whatausername · 23/08/2020 21:44

@wowfudge

I've always thought that the majority of biblical names are classic rather than dated.
I think if they've had a rather noticeable surge in popularity and that has tailed off then they will feel dated for a while.
ImaSababa · 23/08/2020 21:50

I've never been able to fathom why anyone would choose this name for a boy.

Loveden · 23/08/2020 22:02

I loved it and thought about using it but northern family members (I am from London) immediately brought up the "big Jesse" thing. In the end I had a girl, so we never did get to use it.

Jesse James (outlaw) is quite a manly role model!

Thanks for excellent feedback everyone! It's given me lots of food for thought ( no pun intended!).

I really like it. No idea about the insult others have mentioned. Not something I've ever heard.

Tillygetsit · 23/08/2020 22:49

I have a 9 year old dn Jesse. He's never had any insults chucked at him by his peers...just some snide remarks from family out of his earshot Hmm
I personally love it but then again Im a marmite fan.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 23/08/2020 23:00

Hate marmite, love Jesse. I wanted it for a boy but DH vetoed it straight away.

Firebird83 · 23/08/2020 23:43

New Testament boys names like Peter and Mark are dated, but Old Testament ones like Noah and Elijah are definitely ‘in’ at the moment!

Everythingsr0sie · 23/08/2020 23:47

Love Jesse, go for it!

JollyGiraffe12 · 23/08/2020 23:51

Awful name

August20 · 24/08/2020 00:11

I really like it (assuming a boy with that spelling) BUT I am outside the UK and didn't realise it was a marmite name there. I have known a few Jesses but all American or Australian.

MrsAvocet · 24/08/2020 00:36

I can take it or leave it. It's fine, but not a favourite of mine.
Wouldn't have picked it myself, but don't think it is odd or dated. But then my boys have New Testament names and I don't really think of them as dated either - classic or timeless more like as they've been used in every generation of my family for at least 150 years. The only names I really think of as dated are names that are very much associated with only one period in time, for example Kylie and the 1980s (in this country anyway - I appreciate it is different in Australia). Biblical and other "classic" names do wax and wane in popularity of course, but they tend not to disappear completely so I don't think they signal a particular era in quite the same way. And come to think of it, does it really matter if they do?

AlwaysLatte · 24/08/2020 00:39

I love it! I don't know what Big Jesse means either, maybe it's a regional thing. I'd go for it!

AlwaysLatte · 24/08/2020 00:42

Ah is Big Jesse from Breaking Bad? That would explain it, I haven't seen that.

lakesidesummer · 24/08/2020 00:48

I'm too Scots for it to work for me but in other contexts it would be fine.

Bouncingbelle · 24/08/2020 00:52

I like it but in Scotland Jesse would just get the Micky ripped out of him constantly ‘ya big jesse’

alexdgr8 · 24/08/2020 00:54

i think big jessie mean something like nancy boy.
but i had never heard it until i was middle aged.
i think it is dying out, as an insult, as is homophobia generally.
jesse is a classic name.
use it if you like it. nothing wrong with it.

by the way, anyone heard of mary-jane used in similar perjorative way ?

Jj2431 · 24/08/2020 02:46

i love Jesse on a boy

Pippilangstrumpfie · 24/08/2020 07:33

Jess and Jessie are girls names. Short for Jessica.

Jesse sounds the same!

DoTheMaccaroni · 24/08/2020 07:44

I’m in the North West and although “you big Jessie” was vaguely familiar I only ever see people bang on about it on here whenever this name is mentioned. Other than that I’ve only heard it on films. Nobody in my area would ever use that term!

I love Jesse 😁

micc · 24/08/2020 07:56

I love it, love the names Jesse, jessie and Jessica. Everyone I have ever met called jess has been great ahah
But I have to agree it does sound a bit American.
