Would this be a terrible idea?

We're expecting our first child and really starting to settle on the name Stellan for our son.
Before we make an awful name faux pas or error that we haven't realised, would the name work internationally and not just in Scandinavia?

I'm Scandi, DH is from the UK and we currently live in the UK.

My scandi dad thinks it's a girls name (mainly as I think he hears it as Stella over the the phone).

I think Stellan is nice and clearly is a boys name imo. There’s a famous Scandi Stellan isn’t there? Is there a shortening of it?

Cheesecake53 · 22/08/2020 14:28

I love that name for a boy.

RatInADollhouse · 22/08/2020 14:29

I’ve never heard it before but it sounds nice. It may get confused with Stella, though, esp if it is shortened to a nickname like “Stell”.

MikeUniformMike · 22/08/2020 14:48

A lot of people will hear it as Stella over the phone.

LilacSloth · 22/08/2020 14:56

I like it and think it works just fine internationally.

Bloodylush · 22/08/2020 14:58

Ive never heard of it and not particularly keen.

Beachbodylonggone · 22/08/2020 14:59

Stella Artois would put me off.
Known as Wife Beater where I am from!

iklboo · 22/08/2020 15:00

Stellan Skarsgård is the first thing that came to my mind and he's an excellent actor.

VerbenaGirl · 22/08/2020 15:04

I really like it!

Elbels · 22/08/2020 15:06

I've got scandi origins and live in the UK and really like it!

CatRamsey · 22/08/2020 15:09

Stellan Skarsgård comes to mind for me too, thats not a bad thing though! I like the name Stellan, it feels a nice strong name for a boy.

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 22/08/2020 15:09

Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bethany’s son is called Stellan (after Stellan Skarsgard) I think it’s lovely.

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 22/08/2020 15:09

and no pronunciation issues or anything

Orphlids · 22/08/2020 15:29

I love it, it’s an excellent choice. I’d be excited to meet an adult Stellan; I’d assume he’d be absolutely gorgeous. And it’s sweet for a little chap, too. It’s a very strong, masculine sounding name.

Mashingthecompost · 22/08/2020 17:45

Stellan is on one of my lists, it's a good one. Easy to say, not really popular but not one you need to puzzle out. Doesn't go with our last name so I'm prepared to give you it ;)

Firebird83 · 22/08/2020 22:33

Love it!

DramaAlpaca · 22/08/2020 22:35

It's a very nice name, good choice.

Immigrantsong · 22/08/2020 22:37

What about Stelios?

Aerielview · 22/08/2020 22:38

Lovely name op

PeaceAndHarmoneeee · 22/08/2020 22:45

Great name- very strong and definitely a boy's name!

Carouselfish · 22/08/2020 23:37

Love it.

december2020 · 23/08/2020 08:00

Aww thank you everyone! 💙
It's made me a lot more confident that it'll work internationally and he wouldn't have problems with it at school or at work, I know kids can be cruel.

Now just need to see if he looks like a Stellan when he's born!

Great name. Good choice.

Duggeeismysaviour · 23/08/2020 17:53

Love it, and I dont think or will ever be heard as stella, because the a is pronounced slightly differently. I love scandi names, my dd and ds have viking names (there is a strong familial link). Now if we ever have a third....I'm thinking stellan is on the list!!

december2020 · 23/08/2020 20:49

Thank you!! 💙
Really hope he'll look like a Stellan when he arrives, otherwise we're back to square one with names.
