Would this be a terrible idea?

We're expecting our first child and really starting to settle on the name Stellan for our son.
Before we make an awful name faux pas or error that we haven't realised, would the name work internationally and not just in Scandinavia?

I'm Scandi, DH is from the UK and we currently live in the UK.

My scandi dad thinks it's a girls name (mainly as I think he hears it as Stella over the the phone).

Also thought of Skarsgard.

If you are worried about confusion with Stella, how about Stefan?

LouiseNW · 23/08/2020 21:05

Don’t know if, but like it very much.

LouiseNW · 23/08/2020 21:05

It

Cbeebiesrehab · 23/08/2020 22:31

Lovely choice

PunkrockerGirl59 · 23/08/2020 22:46

No, not keen. And you'll saddle your kid with a lifetime of having to explain/spell his name Confused Why on earth would you do that to your poor kid?

Lozz22 · 23/08/2020 22:56

@iklboo

Stellan Skarsgård is the first thing that came to my mind and he's an excellent actor.
Yep same here!!
OnceUponACat · 23/08/2020 23:03

Love it! Go for it.

Me too.

I'm not sure I've ever heard the name spoken but I'd have thought it would be more 'Stellun' or 'Stelln' with all the stress on the first syllable which is different to Stella. And even if unfamiliar it's a straightforward spelling.

CathyNorth · 23/08/2020 23:12

I love it!!

GoldenPlover · 23/08/2020 23:15

I literally added this to my boys name list about a month ago after reading stellan skarsgard's wiki and now I've read your thread on it! I love it but think I'd personally use it as a middle name :)

SleepingStandingUp · 23/08/2020 23:15

Stella is fine. Re Stella, it's hardly a popular girl's name these days anyway so most of his peer group won't know that name anyway. Can always shorten to Ste which is a perfectly average name in the UK

irishheartenglishblood · 24/08/2020 09:23

Skarsgard here too, excellent actor so definitely a good name!

Absolutely love the name Stefan (and Axel) as well, but they're both names of long term boyfriends of the past, so sadly had to rule them out. I wish I'd known not to date men with good names when I was younger 🙈😂.

But super glad Stellan seems to fit so well internationally for a boy! Phew!

I hadn't heard it before but like it. I definitely think it will work!

lljkk · 24/08/2020 15:10

Not a fan, sorry, However, I'm sure you'll make it work if you love it.

namenerd · 28/08/2020 01:57

I've never heard it before but oh my it is so handsome. I can really picture a little boy and a grown man called Stellan- it really works for all ages ! 😍

Familyshitshow · 28/08/2020 02:01

Sounds like a male horse IMO.

Maybe could be a boys name but I just think of a horse.

december2020 · 31/08/2020 08:01

@Familyshitshow ooo I can see how you made the connection! It hadn't occurred to me! Definitely one to think about.

At the moment it's definitely still our forerunner.
We're so different in names and styles and it feels like Stellan could still work really well in an international setting without too much grief for him growing up!
Thank you everyone! Really appreciated!
