Just curious! I'm 33 weeks pregnant and decided on baby's first name at around 21-22 weeks, but took a few weeks longer to settle on a middle name.

I’ve had the middle name picked out for 20 years (family name). I’m nearly 23 weeks and it’s currently between 3 choices for first name.

justoverthehorizon · 15/08/2020 20:27

2 weeks after she was born!

eatthepineapple · 15/08/2020 20:28

After she came!

Pregnant again now and at 18 weeks we've barely thought about names yet!

DramaAlpaca · 15/08/2020 20:29

With DS1 his first name was decided the afternoon of the day he was born and his middle name the next day.

With my next two, both first and middle names were decided before they were born as we knew both times what we were having.

It was fairly easy to decide as DH is so easy going he agreed to all my suggestions.

OhTheRoses · 15/08/2020 20:30

DS was definitely going to be Henry and then for the last 3/4 weeks Hugo. He is neither.

DD (We didn't know the sex) was going to be Thomas or William. We hadn't really thought about a girl. Had touched on Imogen and Daisy. Went for a different name.

I think you have to meet them and reserve judgement until then.

NameChange30 · 15/08/2020 20:38

DC1 - agreed on our favourite first name while I was pregnant (can't remember exactly when) but waited until he was born before confirming. I knew which middle name I wanted (family name) but annoyingly DH hesitated for a while and didn't agree to it until just before our appointment to register the birth.

Now pregnant with DC2 and middle name was confirmed when we found out she's a girl - it's a family name and we knew we'd use it for a girl even before conceiving. We have a favourite first name too but again waiting until she's born before confirming.

Sayitagainwhydontyou · 15/08/2020 20:39

4 years before she was born.

CharlotteFlax · 15/08/2020 20:59

First name about half an hour after she was born, full name with middles on the way to get her registered!

ifiwasascent · 15/08/2020 21:01

I'm not pregnant or planning on being for a while but our middle names have been settled on for a while! 2 for each and are family names

Boringnamechanging · 15/08/2020 21:06

Ds we had a definite middle name as soon as we knew he was a boy and was fairly certain on first name by 28 weeks but I wouldn't pick for sure until he was here. We did go with the first name we'd preferred all along.

Dd we knew the name before the scan if she was a girl but couldn't decide on the spelling until late on. Middle name we decided at 30 weeks ish.

zebrapig · 15/08/2020 21:14

DD we had a shortlist of 5 names, we decided on a combo of two of them once I was in recovery I think (EMCS).

DS we had no names ready (he was prem) but decided in after he had been taken to SCBU while I was being stitched up!

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 15/08/2020 21:40

DS1, I had a clear favourite from pretty early on and while we technically kept an open mind until he was born, we had no real contenders for a back up name and he was the name I picked. His middle name was pretty set too as it has a meaning.

DS2, we’re really struggling to settle on anything (see above about the lack of back up boys names!). We have a shortlist of three names so far but I don’t think we’ll settle until he is born this time.

However we have a girls name picked out from last time which now will likely never get used!

MondeoFan · 15/08/2020 21:45

No. 1

The day she was born as thought it was going to be a boy

No. 2

About a week before she was born, didn't have any boys names so was keeping my fingers crossed baby was another girl

AnneLovesGilbert · 15/08/2020 21:48

Two days after she was born. We had several boys and girls names picked out beforehand but in the excitement and haze that followed her birth could only remember one name when people started asking what she was called Grin

It’s perfect, but that was luck.

My friend knew her girl’s name for the whole pregnancy, had a girl, told everyone the name and then decided it was all wrong several days later and changed it to something she’d never considered before.

Cam2020 · 15/08/2020 21:49

First name was sorted quite early on but middle name was decided the day she was registered. DP persuaded me to go with my grandmother's name as he knew it was special to me. DD's first and last name is long and I thought the middle name was too long, but he persuaded me to do it and I'm glad he did now.

SE13Mummy · 15/08/2020 22:03

DD1's middle name was decided before I was pregnant. Her first name was chosen when she was about 10 hours old - we had a shortlist of two we were both really happy with but as DH has a habit of calling people by the name they look like (even if it's not even vaguely related to their name), I let him have the final say.

DD2's first and middle names were decided 2 or 3 months before she was born. They were both chosen for their meaning which reflected the long journey to having her.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 15/08/2020 22:22

If DD2 had been a boy, I doubt whether she would have a name now (she's 7!) We couldn't agree at all on possible boys names. Her first name was sort of agreed pre birth, but not definite until the day after she was born, but her middle name is a family name. We were trying to chose names over weekly phone calls and email, since DH was abroad.

DD1... About 15 weeks pregnant!

BuffaloCauliflower · 15/08/2020 22:25

We were pretty sure before I was pregnant, I think we settled for sure around 16 weeks (juggled middle names back and forth)

Fishfingersandwichplease · 15/08/2020 22:27

As we walked into registry office to register her birth, DH suddenly announced we should give her my mum's name as a middle name. Wasn't going to give her a middle name but when he suggested it, l knew how much my mum would appreciate the gesture - ha not sure when he suddenly became so thoughtful!!

Fishfingersandwichplease · 15/08/2020 22:28

Christian name was decided before the 12 week scan!!

Shayisgreat · 15/08/2020 22:29

When DS was born we had a list of 4 names and within 4 hours of his birth he had a full name. My DH is Sikh so his middle name was picked out as soon as we knew he was a boy. There was more discussion about what his surname would be than his middle name!

If we have another boy, he will have the same middle name.

HappyPotato · 15/08/2020 22:31

The day we registered her.. and we left that to the last minute!

TheVeryHungryTortoise · 15/08/2020 22:32

About 30 seconds before attending the registry office! We had the first name and surname (obviously) but couldn't pick/didn't really care about the middle name.

Greengrapes1357 · 15/08/2020 22:39

Dc1 about 18 weeks had a back up list just incase.
Dt didn't know what I was having so had to think of two lots of boys and two lots of girls names decided the night before induction but not which combinations as soon as first was born I knew which name to use, the second one was named the same way.

userabcname · 15/08/2020 22:40

Ds1 - after the 20w scan when we knew he was a boy. We both chose family names as middle names which was nice so it was more a case of picking a first name and deciding on the order.
Ds2 - found his first name before we even conceived. Decided I liked the family names as middle names as it worked so well for ds1 so spoke to my mum and MIL to find more family names from each side and we picked out our two favourites for him quite early on.

If we have more dc- we've already got a full girl's name on standby from when I fell pregnant with ds1. If we have a boy it's slightly trickier as between them my boys have six names! But I'm sure we'd agree on something as luckily we have fairly similar tastes.
