Concerns over Samuel

I quite like this name for DS3 - a solid, handsome classic that works well for a little sprog and a grown man. It also fits in well with brothers Thomas and Benjamin.

However, from working as both a secondary school teacher and during my own time at school - Samuel always seems to be a ‘naughty boys name’. All of them have always been causing some type of trouble. I’m worried I won’t be able to think past this if I name DS3 Samuel. Thanks Smile

Gorgeous name and fits so well with your other DC. My DC2 would have been Samuel had she been a boy.

Thirty2andBlue · 15/08/2020 19:45

I've only known lovely Samuel's! Working with children does make it a million times harder to name your own though. The names Abigail and Eleanor both forever ruined for me Sad

Ha I had this exact dilemma when I was pregnant and liked a different name so I changed my mind last minute and went for ...... Samuel Grin
If it helps mine is now 8 and is a very good, polite and funny little boy who's never had as much as a mild telling off from any teacher or childminder.

Nicecupofcoco · 15/08/2020 19:46

I like Samuel, all the sams I know are lovely... Not naughty at all. But if you can't get past it then look for another name. Does go well with Thomas and Benjamin.... Sorry I'm no help! Grin

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 15/08/2020 19:48

I have a Samuel and have always been on the lookout-never a naughty boy name and he is now in his 20's.
DS2 name on the other hand

It's a great name that grows well with them.

Thneedville · 15/08/2020 19:49

Great name. Did the Samuels you know have any redeeming features? Eg naughty but in a cheeky way? Full of character?

Lilybet1980 · 15/08/2020 19:51

Well it obviously hasn’t put you off the name if you’re considering it.

I don’t know many Samuel’s but the ones I knew at school and that I know at work are all pretty decent! Not a naughty one amongst them!

CatteStreet · 15/08/2020 19:52

Samuel was very, very popular around 15 years ago, so you're going to have encountered a lot of children with that name and some of them were going to be 'naughty boys'. I see it as quite classless and classic, like Alex or indeed your other children's names. It's a great name and I know a couple of lovely ones.

sorryforswearing · 15/08/2020 19:55

I teach and Samuel is not on my list of naughty boy names.

Firebird83 · 15/08/2020 20:07

Definitely not a naughty boy name! Mine is very good anyway Grin

@Thneedville a couple fit into those types of characteristics. But I do know a Samuel that was permanently excluded from secondary school, this is one that really sticks out in my mind.

I’ve just asked DH, who is a Samuel, and he says he was good as gold Grin

Sorry, OP, that doesn’t help much. I guess you’d need to remove the associations in your head. Maybe look at a list of famous Samuels to see if you can disassociate it from the naughty kids? en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_(name)

DramaAlpaca · 15/08/2020 20:32

I don't believe in this weird idea of 'naughty boy names' so I think it's fine.

It does make a change to hear a solid classic name being thought of as 'naughty' though Grin

userabcname · 15/08/2020 20:35

Oh really? I'm a teacher and never had a naughty Samuel. I know mn frowns on "naughty" names but mine would be Connor, Harrison and Theo for boys.

DustbinTimberlake · 15/08/2020 20:36

I know one toddler and he’s lovely! He’s either Samuel or Sammy, never Sam.

BikeRunSki · 15/08/2020 20:46

My 11 year old Samuel is no angel, but he’s not a naughty boy. I know I’m biased, but it’s nit really a naughty boy name to me. I’m a Cub leader - I have a list!

islandislandisland · 15/08/2020 20:48

I think it's lovely, have worked with teens for 12 years and only known one 'naughty' Sam. It was my boys name choice too, think it's a really solid sensible name.

Mumfymum · 15/08/2020 20:59

I've taught a few Samuels. I know you can't really generalise with names but they were all really well-behaved and polite.

Whatsyourflava · 15/08/2020 21:02

I think it's a gorgeous name and works so well with siblings
Only know one Samuel and he's not naughty

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 15/08/2020 22:37

Samuel isn’t a naughty boy name. It was just REALLY popular for a while so there were a lot of them, and it sounds like you met a couple of naughty ones.

MikeUniformMike · 16/08/2020 17:15

The Samuels/Sams I know are all terrific. One has a Phd from Oxbridge, one is a GP, friend's lovely son, nice lad in my class at school ...

Ah, just thought of one naughty one, but he's a Sammy.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 17/08/2020 17:46

I used to teach and Samuel wasn't considered a naughty boy name....

AcrobaticCardigan · 17/08/2020 18:33

Really lovely name.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 17/08/2020 18:57

I only left teaching two years ago, Samuel was definitely not on my naughty boys list. Kieran, Kyle, Kayden, Jack, off the top of my head. Actually taught very few Sams.

Also, as my username might suggest, Sam Vimes (Pratchett) is awesome.

IsolaPribby · 17/08/2020 19:02

I really don't understand this naughty name idea? Surely whether a child turns out naughty depends on a mixture of character and parenting, and not on their name? If you like the name use it, if not don't. You could name him something which turns out to be the next 'naughty' name.
