Concerns over Samuel

I quite like this name for DS3 - a solid, handsome classic that works well for a little sprog and a grown man. It also fits in well with brothers Thomas and Benjamin.

However, from working as both a secondary school teacher and during my own time at school - Samuel always seems to be a ‘naughty boys name’. All of them have always been causing some type of trouble. I’m worried I won’t be able to think past this if I name DS3 Samuel. Thanks Smile

I'm a secondary teacher and I have a Samuel, he's Sam to us and Samuel in school and an angel in school (less so at home!) All the Samuels I've taught have been lovely so it wasn't vetoed!!

Love Samuel, not a naughty boy name at all and fits very well with Benjamin and Thomas

Susiesue61 · 17/08/2020 19:14

No, I have a Samuel who is just turned 15, he is gorgeous and laid back and charming 😊

lorn195 · 17/08/2020 19:15

I have a Samuel, though prefers to be called Sam. It was an easy name to choose as absolutely loved it. Traditional but solid and has never gone out of fashion.

Bubbletrouble43 · 17/08/2020 19:15

My dd1 ( now aged 22) was going to be a Samuel obv if she was a ds. Love it. I know a few aged from 10 to about 25 all very nice well behaved boys.

Bubbletrouble43 · 17/08/2020 19:21

The naughty boys I've encountered have disproportionately been called Josh/Jacob but I haven't let that prejudice me against those names as they are perfectly nice names.

helpamamaout · 17/08/2020 19:23

I'd go with Uel instead of Samuel

helpamamaout · 17/08/2020 19:24

Don't like Sam or Sammy

Flappingflamingo · 17/08/2020 19:27

My Samuel (Sam) is 15, he's annoying, cocky, irritating, cheeky, wind up merchant etc but he's also funny, (fairly/mostly) responsible, looks after his younger sisters, in all top sets, predicted all A-A* or what ever the equivalent is these days. Bright and sporty, generally a pretty amazing boy that I couldn't be more proud of. So I know I'm extremely biased but I also don't know a bad Sam. It's a great name, which my son also loves, please don't let a bad few put you off 🙂

It is a major disadvantage of being teacher, when picking names. I have to say though, that isn't my experience with Sams, or Samuels, and it is a lovely name, and is a similar style to your other boys.

StCharlotte · 17/08/2020 19:48

Tom, Ben and Sam is such a great combination. It could only be bettered with the addition of a Dan(iel) Smile

I'm biased mind, as my DH is one of those and another one would have been our boy's name choice.

Samuel is just such a gorgeous name. I can't help but feel happy when I see it written. And Sams are always handsome and kind, down-to-earth men. And Sammys are adored toddlers.

These are my associations with the name!

Interestingly I don't actually know many Samuels at all, so not sure where these ideas come from in my head. Grin I must really love the name. I do, it's fab.

insancerre · 17/08/2020 21:19

My Samuel is 31 and was never naughty, and is lovely now
I work with children and I’ve never known a naughty Samuel

carlyfrench · 17/08/2020 21:23

I have a Benjamin Isaac and a Samuel Joseph. And now I'll need to name change 😬

Parky04 · 17/08/2020 21:28

I have a Benjamin and a Samuel. Benjamin is much better behaved than Samuel!

carlyfrench · 18/08/2020 17:40

@Parky04 same.

Teachers adore Ben. They euphemistically describe Sam as "a character."

Carouselfish · 18/08/2020 17:50

Sam is nice. I don't like the muel part of Samuel. Sounds like mewling, gruel, mule. Would go for Samson if I needed a long version.

BeBraveAndBeKind · 18/08/2020 17:50

I have a Samuel and he's clever, cute and well behaved. His reception teacher thought he was so lovely she said she'd happily adopt him as a brother for her daughter.

Also, as my username might suggest, Sam Vimes (Pratchett) is awesome My DH is a massive Pratchett fan so our Sam was named for Sam Vimes. 😊

My Samuel is two and was the most laid back baby. Slept through from two weeks old. I dont know any Samuels atm apart from mine. Theres been one at the primary school I work at in 6 years. Dd9s year 2 teacher was a Sam too. I think it works well with your other names.
