A “made up name” that I love

There’s so many (especially in the US) names that are essentially completely made up and I tend not to like most of them but today I stumbled across Elora on a Facebook baby name page and actually love it. Or could be spelt Allora. I’m fairly sure it’s not a “real” name but think it’s so beautiful. Has anyone ever heard it? General thoughts?

Sounds like fabric conditioner.

ImNotWhoYouThinkIam · 13/08/2020 01:12

My friend has an Elora. I think it's beautiful!

NameChange2PostThis · 13/08/2020 01:14

Elora is Hebrew and quite cool and pretty. Check how it sounds with your local accent as could end up being Eh Laura

Allora is Italian for the word ‘then’ so a bit meh imho

whatausername · 13/08/2020 01:21

I read it in Cilla Black's voice for some unknown reason 😂

It's not made up, I've heard of it a few times. It doesn't sound pretty somehow even though it ticks the boxes for that trend of vowel-heavy, frilly girls' names.

cocavino · 13/08/2020 01:25

Just fyi Allora is a sort of filler word in Italian. It sort of has the same meaning as "well/ ok then / anyway" in front of a sentence in English.

howlathebees · 13/08/2020 01:29

Sounds beautiful

Change17 · 13/08/2020 01:31

whatausername I’m surprised I even like it as I tend to favour unisex names for girls. Some of
My favourites are Frankie, Dylan, Alex, Cameron. I don’t tend to me a fan of the “frilly” sounding names at all but this one just caught my eye. I’d never use it though

I know someone who has an Ellora, it's a lovely name

Soubriquet · 13/08/2020 02:10

Elora is also the name of the baby princess from the film Willow Grin

ColintheCrow · 13/08/2020 02:32

Yes Willow! That was my first thought.

quantumdog · 13/08/2020 02:34

I know an Elora, little sister to an Aurelia. I think second child got the nicer name. It's lovely.

Oneandabean · 13/08/2020 08:41

I first thought of the movie willow too. The princess was Elora Danan in that so it’s definitely not made up.

Ughmaybenot · 13/08/2020 08:42

I don’t like Allora but I think Elora is lovely.

IckleBear · 13/08/2020 09:02

Definitely spell it Elora

CMMum88 · 13/08/2020 09:10

I know someone called elora.

PoodleMoth · 13/08/2020 10:18

Elora is lovely. I'm really not keen on the 'Unisex' name trend for girls. It never goes the other way e.g a boy called Scarlett

MikeUniformMike · 13/08/2020 13:27

Allora is a no from me.

Elora is ok but it seems to be yet another El name. Laura is nicer.

Sunnyday321 · 13/08/2020 13:29

Elora is nice. Allora is not so great and reminds me of allure which you would not want for a child's name.

Glamazoni · 13/08/2020 13:31

My first thought was Elora Danon. It’s lovely.

WhereTheCrawdadsSing · 13/08/2020 13:33

I know an Elara. Didn't think it was made up, but it may be...? I'm not keen tbh. Think it's a bit if a mishmash of other names. Ellie and Lara. Allora is a bit like Allanah and Laura. I think names which are "made up", unique or extremely uncommon, but sound a lot like other, more mainstream names are a bit blah tbh and lacking in personality.

elfran · 13/08/2020 13:47

Where I'm from there is a township called Elora, so I just think of that. I believe it was named after the Ellora caves in India (no idea how they got their name). I think it works well as a girl's name; all the L-heavy names that are around these days certainly aren't my style, but I wouldn't bat an eye at meeting a little Elora.

BertieBotts · 13/08/2020 13:51

My sister had a classmate Elora. I remember going to her house to play.

NoemiaElara · 13/08/2020 15:37

It's lovely. It not a made up name. Besides, all names were made up at some point.

Change17 · 13/08/2020 15:40

NoemiaElara I tend to agree. I’ve found a lot of MNers though can be incredibly snooty when it comes to baby names. I lived in the US for almost 2 years and a lot of names that were seen as so incredibly normal get absolutely torn to shreds on MN

Aren't all names made up ?
