A “made up name” that I love

There’s so many (especially in the US) names that are essentially completely made up and I tend not to like most of them but today I stumbled across Elora on a Facebook baby name page and actually love it. Or could be spelt Allora. I’m fairly sure it’s not a “real” name but think it’s so beautiful. Has anyone ever heard it? General thoughts?

I went to school with a girl called Alora many many moons ago

NoemiaElara I tend to agree. I’ve found a lot of MNers though can be incredibly snooty when it comes to baby names. I lived in the US for almost 2 years and a lot of names that were seen as so incredibly normal get absolutely torn to shreds on MN
I mean...I'm from the states originally. I don't think they've exactly got the business of baby naming right, while the UK have got it wrong...

If you think MN is full of crashing snobs who tear perfectly good names to shreds because they're so prejudiced and wrong, with respect, why start a thread on here at all? Surely you don't need to the opinions of dreadful snobs like us Grin.

Change17 · 13/08/2020 15:51

WhereTheCrawdadsSing yikes... how incredibly defensive. when did I say I think the US have got it “right”?
I also don’t recall saying “every single member of mumsnet is a name snob” but go ahead, create your warped narrative.

Gosh it never fails to amaze me how often people twist words. Why? Are you bored or is it genuinely fun for you?

Eh? I was trying to have a bit of fun with it tbh op. Clearly it didn't translate well into text Smile.
SerenityNowwwww · 13/08/2020 15:53

My sister taught an Alora.

SerenityNowwwww · 13/08/2020 15:55

I once had a Saturday job with a girl who had an unusual name. Her dad made it up, she said. Nope he certainly didn’t make up Carissa...

Change17 · 13/08/2020 15:55

WhereTheCrawdadsSing Ah ok then I apologise it’s often so hard to interpret tone over text. I’ve recently come off an AIBU that turned so nasty and vitriolic that I’m probably on the defends a little

And op, if you want a very serious, non jokey response from me; you really don't need the opinions of people who are snooty just for the hell of it Smile.

It's a totally fine name. I expect in real life nobody would bat an eyelid in the UK or in the US.

I think, when you ask for opinions on MN, people do tend to nitpick and really consider the name so they can give the full opinion they are asked for. In real life, it's just a case of "oh, what's your dd's name? Elora? Lovely"! And that's that. No opinion required. No judgement. Nada.

People overthink when you ask for opinions on the baby name board. It's part of the fun, but not to be taken too seriously Smile.

Ah understandable op! AIBU is not for the faint hearted...or the normal hearted Grin!

Have you heard of the Welsh name, Eleri (El-air-ee)?

DGRossetti · 13/08/2020 16:05

Incidentally, probably terribly terribly dating, but ... I now can't get the song "We all adore-a ... Kia Ora" out of my head. Probably not an issue for the OP though.

(I almost posted a YouTube clip, but it really hasn't dated well Sad)

How about spelling it Alora as a pp mentioned^^?

(According to google), Alora is an African name and it means "My Dream". It's from Botswana apparently?

It's also a municipality in Spain, but with an accent on it!

tillythepony · 13/08/2020 16:46

Is Elora made up? I used to know someone with a little girl called this. I didn't think she had made it up and just presumed it was quite unusual and pretty.

Or Allora in Italian - kind of like ‘so’ ‘however’ well’ sigh....
WhereTheCrawdadsSing · 13/08/2020 16:55

Yes, I knew I'd heard the word "allora" somewhere! Couldn't work out if I was mixing it up with ahora, meaning "now" in Spanish. It must be the Italian I was thinking of!

WhereTheCrawdadsSing · 13/08/2020 16:56

In french it's alors I think. Same meaning as the Italian.

utterlynutty · 13/08/2020 17:09

I know an Elora.

FizzyGreenWater · 13/08/2020 17:52

It was one of the names I cited in a post not long back with someone asking about 'Araya', this was the post:

Just nothingy and sounds made up - there are so many girl‘s names like this - three syllables, begins with A or E, fairly bland sound. It sounds like you’ve tried to find a new one of those to be unique.

Elena
Aria
Amara
Aleesha
Elora
Anara
Amina
Elisha
Alana

They just go on and on. People will ask to spell it, and it’s got little personality because there are so many names almost the same. So no!!!

Auraya! Another one for the List of The Bland posted above grin

WHY? They all sound the same!

A or E to start
sound in the middle
a at the end.

I could make loads up.

Aurola
Enila
Alona
Aumana
Arlina
Elima
Alosha
Esora

Meaningless.

So in a nutshell OP, no from me! It couldn't be duller.

sakura06 · 13/08/2020 18:38

Elora is lovely!

BingoGo · 13/08/2020 18:46
