Rory or Ronnie?

Baby boy is due in 5 weeks. My partner has his heart set on Rory but yesterday I came across the name Ronnie on a baby names list, I really like it.
Which do you prefer?

Rory by a million miles. Ronnie is awful.

Rachel247 · 11/08/2020 20:38

Many people struggle with their Rs.

Two Rs are tough for those. It becomes Wowy.

Cmini · 11/08/2020 20:46

Rory 100% (I have a Rory Grin)

HD98 · 11/08/2020 21:18

@AllPlayedOut
They asked which name was preferred - that doesn't mean slate one or both of their name choices, calling them awful or ghastly...

zigaziga · 11/08/2020 21:37

Rory is sooooo much better.

Ronnie is not a nice name.

pilates · 11/08/2020 21:43

Rory 🥰
Dislike Ronnie

Orphlids · 11/08/2020 21:55

@HD98, my comment had no element of snobbery in it. You’re assumption that my dislike of the name is due to snobbery is snobbish in itself. Do you assume the only reason I could possibly dislike a name is because I consider it “common”? You’re the only one out of the two of us to imply there’s any element of class here.

This is a names forum. When people ask for opinions on a name, that is what they will get. There’s no need to get so defensive if people don’t like the same names as you. I’m perfectly aware my children’s names would be considered utterly vile by plenty of people. It doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

daisypond · 11/08/2020 21:56

Rory by miles.

Kitmerow · 11/08/2020 22:04

Ronnie is much nicer than Rory. Anyone who uses ‘positively sublime’ to describe a babies name is not someone you want to getting advice from 😂 what a prat. (@Orphlids)

CanIKondo · 11/08/2020 22:11

I much prefer Rory.

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 11/08/2020 22:22

Rory.
Or even roy if you want unusual.
Dont hear of baby Roys these days.
Always laugh when dd is telling me about something that happened at school.... and then the 2 Ronnies did this.
Never as bad with the 2 Georges or the 2 toms.

HD98 · 11/08/2020 22:22

Snob - 'a person who believes that their tastes in a particular area are superior to those of other people.' Sorry, but I got those vibes from the wording of your comments. They were definitely unnecessarily harsh either way for someone who has only asked which name is preferred.
'Neither are to my taste but Rory is the better of the 2' would have been sufficient.

'There’s no need to get so defensive if people don’t like the same names as you' - I'm definitely not - these aren't my name choices in case you hadn't noticed. I don't feel defensive over these names. I do feel a little defensive over anyone who has their heart set on a name just to get comments such as 'ghastly' simply because they don't share their taste in names. OP might not be bothered in the slightest either, but I don't want anyone to be disheartened by harsh comments.

Just be more kind.

crosstalk · 11/08/2020 22:24

Ronnie would be Ronald? good Norse name. Though often Ranald and the Ronnies I know tend to be shortened forms of Veronica. Rory is lovely and Celtic. I've noticed quite a lot of older names (Alfred etc) coming back in.

Just go for what you want but give him a second name he can fall back on if he doesn't like the first.

sunrainwind · 11/08/2020 22:30

I struggle to say Rory as I have a very minor speech impediment so I have to really concentrate or it sounds like warwy. I still prefer it to Ronnie though.

noraclavicle · 11/08/2020 22:44

What HD98 said, several times over. Does anyone ever stop to think when they rush in to describe names as ‘ghastly’ or ‘awful’ or ‘naff’ that they belong to people other posters know and love?

Starbuggy · 11/08/2020 22:51

Definitely Rory by a very long way

Twixes · 11/08/2020 23:03

Ronnie? Like a moustache? No thank you.

MikeUniformMike · 11/08/2020 23:15

I like Ronnie.

Rory is probably less divisive. It has Wowy and Vovy sounds in my ears.

R names seem a bit too popular at the moment.

MikeUniformMike · 11/08/2020 23:17

I like Roy and Ray too - the ones I know are Royston and Raymond.

Whatsyourflava · 11/08/2020 23:17

Has this helped @Bubblegum21?
I really like both names! I find R names for boys a bit overdone generally at the moment but both names are nice preference for Rory I think as there's quite a lot of Ronnie and Reggies about and I get muddled

Whatsyourflava · 11/08/2020 23:18

Roy and Ray a good shout @MikeUniformMike

TippledPink · 11/08/2020 23:20

Rory definitely over Ronnie- I really hate the name Ronnie!
My son struggles with his R's though so R names would be no good for him (he is 14 now and still can't pronounce them properly).

MikeUniformMike · 11/08/2020 23:23

Ronnie is a bit in the same vibe as Alfie, Albie, Archie, Vinnie...

LadyOfTheCanyon · 11/08/2020 23:38

Rory is nicer. There's always the Ruari spelling?

Bubblegum21 · 11/08/2020 23:40

@Whatsyourflava It has definitely helped! Think it’s safe to say the vast majority prefer Rory.

Thankyou for all the useful replies everyone
