Edie = Ee-Dee
Eddie = Ed-Dee
Eadie = looks made up but assume would be Ee-Dee too.

The normal spelling is the first!

Lavenderblues · 09/08/2020 22:55

Edie = Ed-ee
Eddie = Ed-ee
Eadie = Ead-ee
Eedie = Eed-ee

I would assume these are nicknames for Edward, Edwina, Edna, Edith, etc

NameChange84 · 09/08/2020 22:57

Of course Edie is ED-ee. Ed is Ed and ie is ie!

Do you pronounce Edith - Edd-ith?

Or edict, “eddict”

Predict - preddict?

QueenBarb · 09/08/2020 23:03

I know someone who has an Eadie, and I did think it looked a bit strange when she messaged me with the name as I’ve known 2 Edies and that somehow looks ‘right.’ Both pronounced Ee-dee.

It’s a lovely name, I definitely prefer the Edie spelling though.

Pippilangstrumpfi · 09/08/2020 23:07

Yes, I pronounce predict as preddict. I also pronounce educate and edit as edducate and eddit.

But I appreciate that there are man exceptions in English!

And I would learn to pronounce Edie in any way preferred. Smile

Edie, short for Edith...

This is my Edie...Grin

Edie or Eadie?

Edie ! Lovely name - great choice

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 09/08/2020 23:56

@Lavenderblues

Edie = Ed-ee Eddie = Ed-ee Eadie = Ead-ee Eedie = Eed-ee

I would assume these are nicknames for Edward, Edwina, Edna, Edith, etc

But Edith is pronounced Ee-dith not Edd-ith

DD has a friend called Edie, pronounced ee-dee. I’m forrin and it’s not a name we use in my home country - I first came across the name in desperate housewives, I’m pretty sure they pronounced it ee-dee too.

PoodleMoth · 10/08/2020 08:41

Edie pronounced eedee
I presume Eadie in pronounced the same but I wouldn't use Eadie as it looks odd and she would be forever having to spell it out.

Grufallisfriends · 10/08/2020 08:51

I think Edie can be pronounced Ed ie of Eed ie.

Think about Edible, Edition or Edit. They all have a short Ed sound.

Drumple · 10/08/2020 08:52

Eadie is a surname

ifiwasascent · 10/08/2020 08:55

Edie- E-Dee
Eadie- Ay-dee

florascotia2 · 10/08/2020 09:30

If it matters, the original Anglo-Saxon name (Edith is a later version) was spelled with 'Ea' (Eadgyd - the final 'd' should be an Anglo-Saxon letter pronouched 'th'.)
www.behindthename.com/name/edith

For centuries, Edith and Edie have been spelled that way, and pronounced with a long 'ee' sound.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edith

But English spelling is not consistent. The original forms of Edward, Edwina, Edgar and similar names also all began with 'Ead' but today their first syllable is pronounced differently from Edith.

Yes, there is 'educate' and 'edify' and similar words with a short 'e' sound, but there is also 'edict' (ee-dict) and several words with 'e' followed by a consonant where the 'e' is a long sound (ee), such as 'evil' or 'email'.

aprilfools19 · 10/08/2020 11:13

Absolutely edie. She’ll spend her whole life correcting people on the spelling if you go for Eadie.

Crunchymum · 10/08/2020 11:54

Edie is a diminutive / nickname for Edith.

The other one is made up.

MikeUniformMike · 10/08/2020 11:57

I've not seen Eadie before. Looks wrong.

Don't like Edie or Edith and dislike Eden.

mrsm43s · 11/08/2020 15:13

Edie is traditionally the shortening of Edith, so should be pronounced Ee-dee in line with the name that is being shortened.

Never come across Eadie before, looks made up to me. Would presume a mispelling from someone who didn't realise the name Edie was a diminutive of Edith.

Eddie or Eddy would be the shortening for names that begin with the Ed sound (Edward/Edwin/Edwina/Edmund etc)

sibbys · 11/08/2020 16:08

Edie

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 11/08/2020 16:16

I love the name Edie- pronounced ee-dee
Eadie looks 'made up' although I guess all names were made up at some point! I would pronounce it ee-dee or ay-dee

lampshadery · 11/08/2020 16:19

I know an elderly lady called Eadie, she is Scottish and pronounced ee-die.

However all the little ones seem to be Edie.

TheRosariojewels · 11/08/2020 16:42

Edie

MillicentMartha · 11/08/2020 16:49

Edie, pronounced Eee Dee and lovely
Eadie, maybe also pronounced Eee Dee? Or Eeya Dee?

Eddie pronounced Ed Dee. Short e because of the double consonant afterwards.

Rachel247 · 11/08/2020 17:29

Short e because of the double consonant afterwards.

But what about Edit, Educate, Edna, Edward, edamame etc. Lots of examples of short e sounds with only 1 d. And Ed?!

VashtaNerada · 11/08/2020 17:34

Edie is definitely ee-dee! It’s an old-fashioned name but fairly well-known. Eadie just looks like someone didn’t know how to spell Edie.
Eddie has two ‘d’s.
