Uncommon boys names

My DH is Dutch so we are definitely open to 'Dutch' names but any boys' names that are uncommon but not unusual.

We need them to go with the surname Kuiper (Kai-per) and we haven't decided on middle names (or even if we're having them!) yet - but if we do they will likely be the first names we didn't choose.

Some names we like so far are Sem, Reece/Reis, Luca/Lucas/Lukas, Levi, Ellis, and Jenson.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My half Dutch ds is Gus. This works well in both languages - it’s just more guttural when said by dh’s family! We don’t know any other Gus’s but he does now have a little cousin called Gijs, which does cause some confusion though thanks for that BIL Hmm.

Sem, Reece/Reis, Luca/Lucas/Lukas, Levi, Ellis, and Jenson

I have no idea why people are saying these aren't unusual names. With the exception of Lucas (Luca/Lukas) they are all unusual.

People have weird ideas about what is popular v unusual on the baby names board.

If you want objective information, check out the ONS statistics.

FWIW my favourite is Levi, I also like Bram, and quite like Lucas (although it's more popular and the different spellings would put me off a bit). Less a fan of the others.

Assuming that the surname is DH's, why not give a middle name from your side of the family?

Jenson became popular because of Jenson button, and the trend for -son names. Really not unusual and a tad downmarket.

Ellis comes up on the names threads quite regularly.

Rhys comes up regularly. Reece/Rees is the anglicised form.

Levi - OT names have been popular for a while. Bound to be quite a few around.

Sem - I don't know of any, but I know the name as Shem, brother of Cain and Abel, I think.

Jasper/Jesper

NameChange30 · 08/08/2020 14:07

The baby names threads are not exactly a true reflection of the actual popularity of names!

NameChange30 · 08/08/2020 14:15

Lucas is the only one that's been in the top 40.
Levi and Sem haven't even been in the top 100.

Mies (I mentioned this name above as an ode to Mies Van der Rohe).
Actually, Mies is the Dutch diminutive for Bartholomeus.

TheVanguardSix · 08/08/2020 14:21

And Joachim is pronounced Yo-ah-kim. One of the most amazing Dutch children I know is Joachim. I adore this name (and the actual boy himself, who is from the UK, born to Dutch parents).

VictoriaBun · 08/08/2020 14:23

I once worked with a Soren and I'm sure he was dutch.

@ZoyaTheDestroyer

Understood! I love Willem but I don’t know how popular / dated it is in the Netherlands, and it will frequently be misread as William - and I’m afraid this is true of many names which closely resemble more common names, as you’ve correctly surmised with Sem.
Very dated.

Mies is an old fashioned girls name in dutch.
nasiisthebest · 08/08/2020 22:58

And Mies van der Rohe was german, not dutch.

Mistymonday · 08/08/2020 23:01

So what? Most of the names on my list and the names on others' lists aren't Dutch. I have a thing for cool architects' names.

I first pointed put that in dutch it's a girls name. A bit like calling a boy mary. It doesn't work in dutch for a boy. The OP wants a name that works in dutch. That's what.
