Uncommon boys names

rhiannonslater · 07/08/2020 15:46

My DH is Dutch so we are definitely open to 'Dutch' names but any boys' names that are uncommon but not unusual.

We need them to go with the surname Kuiper (Kai-per) and we haven't decided on middle names (or even if we're having them!) yet - but if we do they will likely be the first names we didn't choose.

Some names we like so far are Sem, Reece/Reis, Luca/Lucas/Lukas, Levi, Ellis, and Jenson.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

All your names are nice apart from Jensen & Sem. Jenson is really not uncommon and Sem is a bit weird. Luca is my fav from your list.

MikeUniformMike · 07/08/2020 16:20

Luca/Lucas/Lukas, Levi, Ellis, and Jenson - none of these are unusual.

Where do you live? Is the baby going to grow up bilingual?
Asking because a very dutch name in the UK might lead to loads of questions along the lines of "Are you Dutch?"
Jens (Yenz) is a popular name but might be dated.

We had the same conversations about our babies, as my DH is Dutch too.

Ds is called Bram, which we love. I insisted on a full name on the birth certificate in case he hated it when he was older, so his official name is Abraham, even though its a name in its own right.

He always get a positive reaction to his name, and its not too out there for English speakers, as its easy to pronounce.

its a popular name in the Netherlands, but we have never come across on in the UK.

My cool dude is now 7 and totally owns the name.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 07/08/2020 23:46

How uncommon are you looking for, OP? None of the examples in your post are rare.

I LOVE Bram, @Iwant2beJKRwhenIgrowUp.

Onceuponatimethen · 08/08/2020 00:28

Abraham is a lovely name

Not common in this age group but Paul and Peter are both great names and work across both languages

Onceuponatimethen · 08/08/2020 00:29

Jerome / Jeroen is lovely too

@MikeUniformMike We live in England and eventually he will be bilingual; we’re not necessarily looking for a Dutch name but would be open on some.

@NoemiaElara We’re starting to think away from Sem now as we think most people would call him Sam instead

@Iwant2beJKRwhenIgrowUp We’d never thought of Bram, definitely a strong contender now though!

@ZoyaTheDestroyer We’re not looking for names which are considered ‘weird’ or old-fashioned but just more uncommon than typical names.

We’ve never heard of anyone called Lukas or Levi so we thought they were quite uncommon! @MikeUniformMike

@rhiannonslater, a friend has a Levi, so it might make it seem a bit more familiar to me, but it's a bit too related to the jeans for my taste. Luca and Lucas are very popular, Lukas will be 'Lucas with a k'

Sem is a bit too close to other words starting with sem, like semen. Sorry but kids will be kids.

Reis will get said as Rice. Not a big issue.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 08/08/2020 13:25

Understood! I love Willem but I don’t know how popular / dated it is in the Netherlands, and it will frequently be misread as William - and I’m afraid this is true of many names which closely resemble more common names, as you’ve correctly surmised with Sem.
