What do you think of first name Joy?

Really drawn to the name and its simplicity.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
BinkyBoinky · 31/07/2020 12:06

Can't think of anything less joyful than the name Joy, it's quite dull.

RuthW · 31/07/2020 12:18

Joyce is nice, shortened to Joy.

VincaMinor · 31/07/2020 13:17

Lovely.

Laufeythejust · 31/07/2020 13:20

I think of a lovely lady that I used to work with and she would always have homemade jam and biscuits at her desk. Reading the name I instantly saw her- I was so jealous of those biscuits!

netflixismysidehustle · 31/07/2020 13:21

I like Jay for boys and Joy for girls.

Boohoohoohooho · 31/07/2020 13:37

I love Joy. Not keen on Joyce.

Toilenstripes · 31/07/2020 13:40

My lovely mother was a Joy and I adore the name. She hated it though! 😆

user1477391263 · 31/07/2020 13:41

I love it. Not keen on Joyce at all.

Theworldisfullofgs · 31/07/2020 13:43

Sorry I don't like it. Every Joy I've ever met was Joyless.

Anaesthetist83 · 31/07/2020 13:55

It’s my name. Growing up, I hated it. Now I quite like it. But hate it when people call be Joyce

KingOfDogShite · 31/07/2020 13:56

My grandmother is called Joy and she’s a wonderful kind woman so it has good connotations for me. Joyce seems more old fashioned somehow.

Giganticshark · 31/07/2020 15:51

It's lovely!
So underused.
It sparks happiness. JOY!
Ohhh I really do love it.
You can't spell or pronounce it wrong.

Anaesthetist83 · 31/07/2020 16:07

Haha you’d be surprised 😂😂😂

SomeWateryTart · 31/07/2020 16:34

@Anaesthetist83

Haha you’d be surprised 😂😂😂
Ah do you get Joey? Joie, like the French Confused? People can be so stupid. Assuming English is their first language of course!
Anaesthetist83 · 31/07/2020 16:54

Jo, Joyce, Joey, Jay

SomeWateryTart · 31/07/2020 16:56

@Anaesthetist83

Jo, Joyce, Joey, Jay

My maiden name was bonkers. It was massacred at my graduation Hmm. But mispronouncing Joy, is pretty bad! It's an actual word, people!

JoyMyNameIsJoy · 31/07/2020 17:00

Yup, Jo all the time, or Joyce!

And it's too much to live up to, tbh. People expect constant sunniness.

SomeWateryTart · 31/07/2020 17:02

Ah yes, that would be the one downside to 'virtue' names.

Verity and Felicity would be hard to live up to. But the plus side to being a Verity who lied is they'd never expect it mwahahahahahaha!

JoyMyNameIsJoy · 31/07/2020 17:10

It's also a very Christian name, so people expect certain behaviours from you too.

Somewaterytart I don't think many people actually associate Felicity with its Latin meaning, not sure why. It's still seen as a name first, meaning second, unlike Joy, Chastity etc which are words first, names second.

Grace seems to have have escaped this, perhaps because it's so ubiquitous?

SomeWateryTart · 31/07/2020 17:20

The Joy I know is (was) very, very religious. Surprisingly so for our age group tbh. But a lovely person and extremely intelligent.

I also know a few families who are very Christian who used Grace, because of God's grace / amazing grace and all that.

TheRosariojewels · 31/07/2020 18:01

It reminds me of King Curtis' nemesis Joy.

SpeedofaSloth · 01/08/2020 09:44

Joy is nice Joyce is bloody awful.

SpeedofaSloth · 01/08/2020 09:46

I have never really associated it with Christianity TBH. Come to think of it I know a few Faiths and I never make that association with them, either.
I knew a cheerful Felicity (lovely name), and I know a Verity who is probably too little to tell if she's compulsively truthful yet.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 01/08/2020 09:55

My middle name. Always hated it. The only relief being it wasn't my first name. Please don't inflict this on your child.

micc · 01/08/2020 16:42

Love it, simple and classic.
It will be nice for a baby named Joy after the year we have all had!
I considered the name Jane, again simple and classic. They both sound beautiful and fair.
