Otis
Orson
Otto

In that order

PlantPotting · 28/07/2020 20:38

Otis
Otto

Orson

In that order! For me, anyway.

@daisypond

Asa.
Ha! Well done!

Pip? Short for phillip?

JacquelineLadyBugg · 28/07/2020 20:47
@JacquelineLadyBugg Grin can't believe I got that wrong.

I also love Oscar and Owen. Oliver too, in spite of its unwavering popularity.
Shaaaaaame Grin!

Otto

Ada and Otis

Mysha · 29/07/2020 08:21

Thanks again everyone. I think we’ll have to wait until he’s born and see which he suits best. To summarise what I’ve taken from all your input..

Orson - quite like that it sounds like ‘awesome’ and the name meaning. But it’s a bit more marmite and a risk

Otis - seems a popular bet, but that probably indicates that it’s about to have a popularity boom and Ada and Otis might be a repeating sibling pair across the country!

Otto - love that they’re palindromic and short and sweet together. But it is a strongly Germanic name and we have no links at all and this puts me off slightly

But we do love them all so I’m sure one of them will fit and seem right at the time

Otis

VenusClapTrap · 29/07/2020 11:35

I wouldn’t worry about the Germanic thing. Ds’s bf is Otto; his family have no German link either and nobody gives it a second thought, any more than the non-French Ottilie in their class.

JacquelineLadyBugg · 29/07/2020 12:18

I also think the Germanic link is fine. I don't think of Ada as especially Germanic tbh. No more so than Eva. There are tonnes of English Evas and Avas, which sounds like the German pronunciation of Eva.

PlantPotting · 29/07/2020 12:31

I also wouldn't worry about the German theme
It wouldn't have crossed my mind unless you said

PlantPotting · 29/07/2020 12:33

I know a little girl called Fleur and that's an actual French word but the family has no connection to France. This is the first time I've actually even thought about it to be honest
Elodie is popular these days too.

BluebellsGreenbells · 29/07/2020 12:34

Orry

He was a king

CeibaTree · 30/07/2020 12:12

Otto is one of my fav boy's names.
I have a friend with a 5 year old Otis who has the nickname of Oaty - I guess it's a common shortening :)

Onestepup · 30/07/2020 14:23

I like Orson, then Otis. Not a fan of Otto.

WinnieLowCo · 30/07/2020 14:25

My favourite is Otto but I think with Ada, Ada and Otto is a bit themey so Otis and Ada works better.

Bohemond · 30/07/2020 14:26

@jackstini

Orson makes me think of Mork & Mindy

Love Otis, very cool and sounds fab with Ada too

Was scrolling to see if anyone else thought this. Mork calling Orson; come in Orson
CrazylazyJane · 30/07/2020 14:27

My vote goes to Otto. I taught an Otto and he and his family were super cool but also lovely.

Otis has grown on me and I really like the NN Oaty Grin

Linny88 · 05/08/2020 09:19

Otis and Otto are very popular, but both lovely. Otto seems to be a little less popular

LetTheSmokeClear · 05/08/2020 13:06

I wouldn't say "very" popular. Roughly 1 in every 3,300 boys born last year were named Otto, and roughly 1 in every 2,500 Otis. There were 235 boy's names more popular than Otto and 218 more popular than Otis, including Beau, Eesa, Tristan, Jax, Chester, and many more.

LetTheSmokeClear · 05/08/2020 13:07

We have an Otto and at first I was very against it because it sounded so German to me. But once we settled on it, it just became him and he suits it so perfectly. Doesn't make me think of anything German at all anymore!

Linny88 · 05/08/2020 14:10

It depends where you live - in East London where people tend to choose more unusual names Otis, Ezra, Isaac and Leo are the names that I hear a lot of amongst the unusual/unique names. Oliver is popular for the whole of the UK, but I haven’t met one. I was just saying if that bothers the poster then Otto may be less popular. I read an article that said that Otis and Maeve have become a lot more popular since Sex Education on Netflix. names.darkgreener.com/#otis Shows how it’s gone up in popularity in recent years.

ihoeihoeihoe · 05/08/2020 14:21

I LOVE Otto

Was on my list along with Ozzy but DP vetoed it.

Otis and Orson not so much but I think Orson reminds me of Desperate HousewivesGrin

debwong · 05/08/2020 17:08

He would be called Orson Cart at school.

Carouselfish · 05/08/2020 20:45

Orson was on my list because I love Orson Welles. But then I saw it wasn't as rare and original as I'd thought and anyway, ended in the dreaded 'son'. I met someone with an Otis and liked that a lot.
