We like the name Finlay for a boy, which could be shortened to Finn. Would you spell it Finlay or Finley?

It's seems to be Finlay in Scotland

sweetnosugar · 23/07/2020 10:30

Finley is how I would spell it.
Lovely name choice by the way!

Pippilangstrumpfie · 23/07/2020 10:30

I'd just name him Fin.

A Finn is a Finnish person. Like a Swede or Dane!

Tavannach · 23/07/2020 10:34

Finlay

Whatsyourflava · 23/07/2020 10:39

@Pippilangstrumpfie but even a simple name like Anne people ask "with an e at the end or not"

Katherine can also be C or K.

I wouldn't say it's a massive bind to occasionally have to specify to people whether your name is spelt with an A or E

Okbutnotgreat · 23/07/2020 10:51

Finn is a great name by itself. Originally Norse and Gaelic It sounds strong and masculine, I much prefer it to the y ending versions.

Cheerfullygo4 · 23/07/2020 10:57

Finlay. Girls tend to have the -ley ending.

florascotia2 · 23/07/2020 11:04

pippi Fionn (pronounded 'Fyonn', English version Finn) is a Gaelic adjective meaning white, bright or fair In all senses). It's been used as a name for thousands of years, most famously in the ancient legend of (in English) Finn MacCool? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fionn_mac_Cumhaill

Fionn/Fin also forms part of many other names, eg Finbar, Fintan and of course Finlay.

florascotia2 · 23/07/2020 11:05

Sorry about random punctuation in the above. More haste less speed.

wishfulthinking101 · 23/07/2020 11:06

Finley

Sojo88 · 23/07/2020 11:18

Finlay is the version I've always seen - Finley looks misspelt to me. Lovely name Smile

Pippilangstrumpfie · 23/07/2020 11:38

Finn may well be a name in its own right, but is definitely also a Finnish person 🇫🇮. That's the first thing that came into my mind. Maybe others won't have that association.

sel2223 · 23/07/2020 12:45

I know a little Finley

ThatsNotMySheep · 23/07/2020 12:56

In Scotland it tends to be Finlay. I would see Finn and Finlay as different names however, and certainly in some areas there would be a distinction made between the 2 names.

ALC1985 · 23/07/2020 17:32

I’ve never seen it spelled with an E and I’m surprised it is the far more common spelling, I’m Scottish tho so up here it’s spelled Finlay or Findlay, genuinely never came across a Finley and spelling it that way never crossed my mind!
FWIW I prefer Finlay.

Thefaceofboe · 25/07/2020 18:55

Finley. You pronounce it like Finley not FinLAY or FinDLAY

Wheresthebiffer2 · 25/07/2020 21:07

Findlay with the D.

Grufallosfriends · 25/07/2020 21:49

How do you pronounce Findlay? Find Lay?!

MrMeSeeks · 26/07/2020 03:39

I admit if i see findlay, i automatically think ‘find-lay’

IHaveBrilloHair · 26/07/2020 03:44

Finlay.

Stopyourhavering64 · 26/07/2020 04:08

I have a Finlay ( I'm Scottish) ...he'll be 21 in a couple of weeks ....glad to see so many people like the name!

ellaandthebella · 26/07/2020 04:22

Just go whichever you prefer. He will get asked to spell it whichever way you choose. I am called Rachel, a very very very common name in the 90s, and I am being forever asked whether it is 'Rachael with an A' and having people spell it wrong in family christmas cards. It is honestly not that bad, and names with multiple spellings are becoming more popular.

(I prefer Finlay).

Hopefulhen · 26/07/2020 04:25

I think if you’re going to pronounce it Fin-lee it would be easier for him if you spell it Finley. I think with Finlay you run the risk of people mispronouncing it to write with hey or yay.

beautifulmonument · 26/07/2020 04:47

Finlay
My son's middle name

Minai · 26/07/2020 20:51

I have a Finley. I would choose depending on how you want to pronounce it. I say it Fin-lee but a lot of people pronounce Finlay as Fin-lay so I went with the Finley spelling.
